Necrotising fasciitis in leukaemic children.

This is a report of necrotising subcutaneous infection in the perineum of three young girls with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). This occurred during induction therapy when they were granulocytopenic. Pseudomonas aeroginosa was isolated from both blood and affected sites. With aggressive chemotherapy and extensive surgical debridement, two patients were salvaged but one perished from the septicaemia. Necrotizing Fasciitis is an uncommon progressive infection of the subcutaneous tissue. It occurs more frequently in adults following surgery or trauma and rarely arises spontaneously. In the

Multifocal necrotizing fasciitis in varicella.

We describe a two-year-old patient who developed severe necrotizing fasciitis in three nonadjacent sites of his extremities during varicella. The recovery of purulent material by aspiration of deep soft tissues after seven days of fever, leukocytosis, and no response to antimicrobial therapy raised the suspicion of this diagnosis. The patient recovered following surgical drainage, debridement, and subsequent skin grafts. It is emphasized that early diagnosis of this severe complication is important since early surgical intervention decreases morbidity and facilitates recovery.

Postoperative necrotizing fasciitis in children.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection, involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and superficial fascia. It is a rare but life-threatening complication in the postoperative patient. In the last 7 years, we have treated four children in whom necrotizing fasciitis developed after appendectomy for ruptured appendix, bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy, or gastrostomy closure. These four patients and seven well-described children from the literature with necrotizing fasciitis following surgery form the basis of this review. The ages ranged from six days to 15 years (mean

Predicting plantar fasciitis in runners.

Ninety-one runners were studied to determine whether specific variables were indicative of runners who had suffered with plantar fasciitis either presently or formerly vs runners who had never suffered with plantar fasciitis. Each runner was asked to complete a running history, was subjected to several anatomical measurements, and was asked to run on a treadmill in both a barefoot and shoe condition at a speed of 3.35 mps (8 min mile pace). Factor coefficients were used in a discriminant function analysis which revealed that, when group membership was predicted, 63% of the runners could be cor

Eosinophilic fasciitis with atypical features.

Eosinophilic fasciitis has been reported to be a syndrome distinct from progressive systemic sclerosis, due to the absence of Raynaud's phenomenon, visceral disease, and autoantibodies as well as steroid responsiveness and an abnormal histopathologic appearance that primarily involves the lower subcutis and fascia. More recent studies, however, have noted considerable overlap in the clinical, pathologic, and laboratory features of these two entities. We report a case that further blurs the distinction between eosinophilic fasciitis and progressive systemic sclerosis.

[Nodular fasciitis in sport shooting].

Although nodular fasciitis is one of the most common of the fibroproliferative conditions, it has not been widely reported. As it is a reactive and selflimiting process, it can be dealt with effectively by surgical excision and recurrences are rare. Histological differentiation from sarcomas is still proved to be difficult and hence there is the risk that inappropriate treatment may be recommended. This case report deals with the onset and natural history of nodular fasciitis in the upper arm of a keen marksman. When instructing children in the use of a shotgun, he was in the habit of placing

[Necrotizing fasciitis following abdominal hysterectomy].

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare disease with a high mortality and morbidity rate. The authors report the case of a 52 year old woman with necrotizing fasciitis following abdominal hysterectomy. The early diagnosis and the radical surgery saved her life from this serious type of infection. By describing this case, the authors wish to emphasize their opinion that early diagnosis is essential to survival and the most important aspect of management is early aggressive surgical intervention.

Multisystem presentation of eosinophilic fasciitis.

A 20-year-old man experienced the onset of progressive scleroderma-like skin changes with eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinaemia after strenuous military activity. A biopsy showed faciitis. Concomitant splenomegaly, polysynovitis, restrictive lung function, myositis, decrease hepatic clotting factors and proteinuria were documented. He responded well to corticosteroids, relapse upon their discontinuation and had a complete remission of both skin and systemic features while on penicillamine and azathioprine. He is new in good health and has received no medication for the past two years.

[Fasciitis with eosinophilia - Shulman syndrome].

Fasciitis with eosinophilia (also Shulman's disease or eosinophilic fasciitis) is characterized by an inflammatory thickening of the fascia, eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinemia. It has clinical and histopathological similarities with scleroderma, though evidence for systemic involvement is rarely found. In this report, we describe the clinical and laboratory features of two patients with this disease and their response to treatment and we discuss its relationship to scleroderma and the pseudosclerodermatous syndromes and its prognosis.

Necrotizing fasciitis in narcotic addicts.

In its early stages necrotizing fasciitis may mimic an uncomplicated cellulitis, with erythema and only mild swelling and minimal pain. The combination of physical findings in a patient with a current history of drug addiction should arouse suspicion of an underlying fasciitis. An aggressive diagnostic approach including incisional biopsy, visual inspection of the underlying subcutaneous tissue, fasica and muscle, along with a Gram stain is suggested. Extensive and frequent debridement, appropriate antibiotics and physical therapy remain the essentials of treatment. A patient is discussed in w

Machine Learning Approach to Classify Vibrio vulnificus Necrotizing Fasciitis, Non-Vibrio Necrotizing Fasciitis and Cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have led to increased adoption of machine learning in disease identification, particularly for challenging diagnoses like necrotizing fasciitis and Vibrio vulnificus infections. This shift is driven by the technology's efficiency, objectivity, and accuracy, offering potential solutions to longstanding diagnostic hurdles in clinical practice. METHODS: This investigation incorporated 180 inpatients suffering from soft tissue infections. The participants were categorized into groups: cellulitis, non-Vibrio necrotizing fasciitis (NF), or

Fasciitis as a Complication of IgA Vasculitis.

Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) is a systemic small-vessel vasculitis caused by the deposition of IgA-based immune complexes, with myalgia being a rare complication. This study reports a pediatric case of IgAV with fasciitis. A five-year-old boy with no previous medical history was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and repeated bilious vomiting. Palpable purpura was observed on his face and right upper limb. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT revealed decreased peristalsis and wall thickening of the fluid-filled duodenum, leading to a diagnosis of IgAV. Initial treatme

Nodular fasciitis of the submandibular gland.

A woman in her 20s presented with a non-tender swelling of the right submandibular gland. Ultrasound was suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma. The histology result of the excised tumour later confirmed a diagnosis of nodular fasciitis which is extremely rare in the submandibular gland. Postoperatively, she has made good recovery. Due to the similarity of the radiological image of pleomorphic adenoma and nodular fasciitis, it poses difficulty in diagnosing nodular fasciitis without cytology or histology of the salivary gland. Although being extremely rare, it would be worth to consider nodular fas

Nodular fasciitis on the cheek of a child.

Nodular fasciitis is a benign proliferation of myofibroblastic cells affecting subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and fascia. This rare disorder is most commonly observed on the upper extremity of adults. We present a case of nodular fasciitis of the cheek of a 12-year-old girl.
