An otherwise conventional diet supplemented with retinyl acetate (vitamin A acetate; VAA) increased a specific antitumor resistance in vivo in mice, and this appeared to be due to the enhancement of immune functions rather than a direct antitumor activity. In recent years, rare fibrosarcoma-like tumors have been identified in the gynecologic tract, characterized by variable CD34 and S-100 positivity and recurrent tyrosine kinase gene fusions in many cases. We identified 17 of these tumors by searching for gynecologic sarcomas expressing S-100 and/or CD34 and supplementing these with cases contributed by collaborating institutions. We have used alkaline elution to study the repair of X-ray-induced DNA strand breaks in vivo in two fibrosarcoma tumors and in several normal mouse tissues after whole-body irradiation of mice with 10-12.5 Gy of X rays.
