Gaze-speech coordination during social interaction in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) can affect social interaction and communication as well as motor and cognitive processes. Speech is affected in PD, as is the control of voluntary eye movements which are thought to play an important role in 'turn taking' in conversation. AIMS: This study aimed to measure eye movements during spoken conversation in PD to assess whether differences in patterns of eye gaze are linked to disrupted turn taking and impaired communication efficiency. METHODS & PROCEDURE: Eleven participants with mild PD and 14 controls completed a two-player guessing game. Duri

Self-reported eye contact sensitivity and face processing in chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS) has been associated with varying levels of social impairments, and with atypical visual scanning of faces. The present study explored whether self-reported sensitivity to eye contact might be related to these phenomena. METHOD: Individuals with confirmed 22qDS were interviewed about their experience and possible discomfort with eye contact. In cases where individuals expresesed discomfort, they were subsequently asked about coping mechanisms used to deal with this discomfort. In addition to self-reported eye contact discomfort, gaze to emotional

Music of infant-directed singing entrains infants' social visual behavior.

Infant-directed singing is a culturally universal musical phenomenon known to promote the bonding of infants and caregivers. Entrainment is a widely observed physical phenomenon by which diverse physical systems adjust rhythmic activity through interaction. Here we show that the simple act of infant-directed singing entrains infant social visual behavior on subsecond timescales, increasing infants' looking to the eyes of a singing caregiver: as early as 2 months of age, and doubling in strength by 6 months, infants synchronize their eye-looking to the rhythm of infant-directed singing. Rhythmi

Can Microsaccades Be Used for Biometrics?

Human eyes are in constant motion. Even when we fix our gaze on a certain point, our eyes continue to move. When looking at a point, scientists have distinguished three different fixational eye movements (FEM)-microsaccades, drift and tremor. The main goal of this paper is to investigate one of these FEMs-microsaccades-as a source of information for biometric analysis. The paper argues why microsaccades are preferred for biometric analysis over the other two fixational eye movements. The process of microsaccades' extraction is described. Thirteen parameters are defined for microsaccade analysi

[Theory of mind, empathy and eye gaze strategies during an artwork observation in neurodegenerative pathologies].

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM) and empathy are severely impaired in the behavioral-variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and more mildly in Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's diseases (PD). Such impairments are associated with behavioral disorders (BD). Modification of visual scanning strategies of complex visual scenes is also found in these pathologies. We hypothesized that these patients applied atypical gaze strategies when observing social events, which would not allow to properly process social cues and would result in the production of erroneous inferences and lack of empathy toward

Eye-movement patterns to social and non-social cues in early deaf adults.

Previous research on covert orienting to the periphery suggested that early profound deaf adults were less susceptible to uninformative gaze-cues, though were equally or more affected by non-social arrow-cues. The aim of this work was to investigate whether spontaneous eye movement behaviour helps explain the reduced impact of the social cue in deaf adults. We tracked the gaze of 25 early profound deaf and 25 age-matched hearing observers performing a peripheral discrimination task with uninformative central cues (gaze vs arrow), stimulus-onset asynchrony (250 vs 750 ms), and cue validity (val

Orienting of covert attention by neutral and emotional gaze cues appears to be unaffected by mild to moderate amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of vision associated with higher-order visual attention deficits. We explored whether amblyopia affects the orienting of covert spatial attention by measuring the magnitude of the gaze cueing effect from emotional faces. Gaze and emotion cues are key components of social attention. Participants with normal vision (n = 30), anisometropic (n = 7) or strabismic/mixed (n = 5) amblyopia performed a cued peripheral target detection task under monocular and binocular viewing conditions. The cue consisted of a centrally presented face with left or right gaze (50%

Clinical usefulness of the Aniseikonia Inspector: a review.

PURPOSE: In the literature several articles have appeared which describe the accuracy and repeatability of direct-comparison aniseikonia tests, such as the New Aniseikonia Test and the aniseikonia test of the Aniseikonia Inspector. In these articles a discussion on the clinical relevance of the results is often missing. Therefore, this article discusses the clinical usefulness of direct-comparison aniseikonia tests, in particular that of the Aniseikonia Inspector. METHOD: Review of the literature shows that an aniseikonia test is usually evaluated by inducing aniseikonia in normal subjects us

Flick-induced flips in perception.

Microsaccades are miniature eye movements produced involuntarily during visual fixation of stationary objects. Since their first description more than 40 years ago, the role of microsaccades in vision has been controversial. In this issue, Martinez-Conde and colleagues present a solution to the long-standing research problem connecting this basic oculomotor function to visual perception, by showing that microsaccades may control peripheral vision during visual fixation by inducing flips in bistable peripheral percepts in head-unrestrained viewing. Their study provides new insight into the func

Skew deviation revisited.

Skew deviation is a vertical misalignment of the eyes caused by damage to prenuclear vestibular input to ocular motor nuclei. The resultant vertical ocular deviation is relatively comitant in nature, and is usually seen in the context of brainstem or cerebellar injury from stroke, multiple sclerosis, or trauma. Skew deviation is usually accompanied by binocular torsion, torticollis, and a tilt in the subjective visual vertical. This constellation of findings has been termed the ocular tilt reaction. In the past two decades, a clinical localizing value for skew deviation has been assigned, and

Effects of heterophoria on stereopsis.

The effects of horizontal heterophoria on Howard-Dolman stereopsis scores were investigated in a population of 1765 stereophotogrammetrists with no obvious impediment to binocular vision as determined in a vision screening. Exophoria over the 1 to 7 delta range showed no systematic and statistically valid effect on stereopsis but esophoria did show an effect. In a related population of 1339 stereophotogrammetrists, subjects with as little as 1 delta (+/- 0.5 delta) of vertical heterophoria exhibited a small but statistically significant decrease in stereopsis test scores compared to those with

The discrimination of blur in peripheral coloured borders.

Our interest is in measuring the threshold for blur, for long borders at well-defined retinal eccentricities between large fields of colour. Our method is to precisely match a centrally fixated sharp-edged disk of one colour against a surround of another, using the minimum distinct border criterion. We then measure the amount of added Gaussian blur that makes the sharp step-edged border just noticeably different. The selected colours are small fixed chromatic deviations of 500 msec duration from an adaptive low photopic or mesopic white. The effects of retinal eccentricity are striking. Blur t

Relationship of heterophoria to stereopsis.

Eighty patients with 6/7.5 (20/25) or better visual acuity in each eye noted differences in stereoacuity with crossed and uncrossed disparity. Esophoric patients who perceived a difference were more likely to have greater stereoacuity with uncrossed disparity, and exophoric patients who perceived a difference were more likely to have greater stereoacuity with crossed disparity. Asymmetry of Panum's area may be a factor in this phenomenon.

The effect of visual field defects on eye movements and practical fitness to drive.

Eye movements of subjects with visual field defects due to ocular pathology were monitored while performing a dot counting task and a visual search task. Subjects with peripheral field defects required more fixations, longer search times, made more errors, and had shorter fixation durations than control subjects. Subjects with central field defects performed less well than control subjects although no specific impairment could be pinpointed. In both groups a monotonous relationship was observed between the visual field impairment and eye movement parameters. The use of eye movement parameters
