Landing maneuvers of houseflies on vertical and inverted surfaces.

Landing maneuvers of flies are complex behaviors which can be conceptually decomposed into sequences of modular actions, including body-deceleration, leg-extension, and body rotations. These behavioral 'modules' must be coordinated to ensure well-controlled landing. The composite nature of these behaviors induces kinematic variability, making it difficult to identify the central rules that govern landing. Many previous studies have relied on tethered preparations to study landing behaviors, but tethering induces experimental artefacts by forcing some behaviors to operate in open-feedback contr

Jumping and the aerial behavior of aquatic mayfly larvae (Myobaetis ellenae, Baetidae).

Mayfly larvae generally are aquatic, but some madicolous taxa (i.e., living in thin water films) crawl over rocks within streams and waterfalls. When startled, these larvae can break the water film, jump, and enter an aerial phase of locomotion. Because mayfly larvae have been suggested as potential exemplars for the origin of insect wings as tracheal gills, and furthermore represent the most basal extant lineage of pterygotes, we analyzed jumping behavior and free-fall trajectories for one such species of mayfly (Myobaetis ellenae, Baetidae) in Costa Rica. Jumping was commonplace in this taxo

Associations among fluctuating asymmetry, tonic immobility duration, and flight distance or ease of capture in chickens.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the associations among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and flight performance or ease of capture in chickens. Cocks (n = 220; 36 wk old) from 10 Spanish breeds and a White Leghorn population were used. The quantitative/qualitative relationship among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and landing accuracy (good or bad) or landing distance (long or short), and the quantitative/quantitative relationship among fluctuating asymmetry, duration of tonic immobility, and time of capture or number of attempts of capture were

Respiratory evolution facilitated the origin of pterosaur flight and aerial gigantism.

Pterosaurs, enigmatic extinct Mesozoic reptiles, were the first vertebrates to achieve true flapping flight. Various lines of evidence provide strong support for highly efficient wing design, control, and flight capabilities. However, little is known of the pulmonary system that powered flight in pterosaurs. We investigated the structure and function of the pterosaurian breathing apparatus through a broad scale comparative study of respiratory structure and function in living and extinct archosaurs, using computer-assisted tomographic (CT) scanning of pterosaur and bird skeletal remains, ciner

Modulation of pectoralis muscle function in budgerigars Melopsitaccus undulatus and zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata in response to changing flight speed.

Flight power varies in a U-shaped relationship with flight speed, requiring the modulation of flight muscle power in order to meet these changing power demands. The power output of the pectoralis muscle can potentially be modulated by changing strain trajectory and the relative timing and intensity of muscle activity. Pectoralis muscle length change and activity patterns were recorded in budgerigars Melopsitaccus undulatus and zebra finches Taeniopygia guttata at a range of flight speeds using sonomicrometry and electromyography (EMG). The pectoralis muscles in these species contain a single m

Responses of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) to compounds on the skin surface of an ox: a laboratory study.

The behaviour of male Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and Glossina pallidipes Austen (Diptera: Glossinidae) alighting on targets with or without ox sebum was compared. The presence of ox sebum did not increase significantly the number of flies alighting on the target in either species. However, after contact with the sebum coated target, both species showed an increase in flight activity, and G. m.morsitans showed a greater tendency to return to the target. This behaviour resulted in a number of short flights which may reflect the search for a feeding site on a host. The duration of each

The mechanism and protection of microgravity induced cardiac remodeling.

Prolonged exposure to a microgravity setting results in alterations to the hearts of astronauts. While multiple studies have documented the impact of microgravity on cardiovascular well-being, there is still a deficiency in extensive research regarding the mechanisms behind cardiac damage. In this review, we focus on the structural and functional changes in the heart associated with microgravity conditions, along with the underlying mechanisms that cause cardiac remodeling due to microgravity. We summarize potential protective strategies against microgravity induced cardiac injury. In this way

Aging in Spaceflight, Oxidative Stress, and Microbiome Dysbiosis: A Comprehensive Review.

The evolutionary theory of aging demonstrates that the force of natural selection declines with age in multicellular organisms. Two population genetic mechanisms are consistent with the evolutionary theory: mutation accumulation and antagonistic pleiotropy. These in turn account for the physiological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms associated with aging. Spaceflight provides an opportunity to examine how organisms physiologically acclimate to environmental conditions. Mitochondria and the gut microbiome are central regulators of host metabolism, redox homeostasis, immune function, and phys

Tackling aging and chronic disease: How space exploration and the 'chameleon effect' of pharmaceuticals can lead the way.

A common misconception surrounding space exploration is that humanity's pursuit of interplanetary travel, such as missions to Mars, is an escape from Earth. In reality, this endeavour offers an invaluable opportunity to address critical biomedical challenges here at home. The extreme conditions of space, including microgravity, cosmic radiation and prolonged isolation, create a natural laboratory for studying human biology under stress, allowing us to explore the boundaries of human resilience. These exposures yield key insights into the biology of aging, the accelerated decline of physiologic

Spaceflight and Ground-Based Microgravity Simulation Impact on Cognition and Brain Plasticity.

Microgravity exposure during spaceflight has been linked to cognitive impairments, including deficits in attention, executive function, and spatial memory. Both space missions and ground-based analogs-such as head-down bed rest, dry immersion, and hindlimb unloading-consistently demonstrate that altered gravity disrupts brain structure and neural plasticity. Neuroimaging data reveal significant changes in brain morphology, functional connectivity, and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. At the cellular level, simulated microgravity impairs synaptic plasticity, alters dendritic spine architecture, an

Beyond Earth's bounds: navigating the frontiers of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) in space.

As interest in deep space travel grows exponentially, understanding human adaptation in becoming an interplanetary species is crucial. This includes the prospect of reproduction. This review summarizes recent updates and innovations in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) on Earth, while also discussing current challenges and areas for improvement in adapting ART studies to the space environment. We discuss the critical components of ART - gamete handling and preparation, fertilization, embryo culture, and cryopreservation - from the daily practice perspective of clinical embryologists and

Venous Thromboembolism in Exploration Class Human Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: A recent finding of a deep venous thrombosis during spaceflight has prompted the need to clarify mechanisms and risks of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In turn, mitigation countermeasures, diagnostic modalities, and treatment options must be explored. The objective of this review was to synthesize current evidence on VTE in spaceflight.METHODS: A literature review was performed from inception to April 2023 pertaining to VTE in the context of spaceflight or ground-based analogs with human participants. PubMed was searched for papers written in English using the terms "spaceflight"

Looking on the horizon; potential and unique approaches to developing radiation countermeasures for deep space travel.

Future lunar missions and beyond will require new and innovative approaches to radiation countermeasures. The Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) is focused on identifying and supporting unique approaches to reduce risks to human health and performance on future missions beyond low Earth orbit. This paper will describe three funded and complementary avenues for reducing the risk to humans from radiation exposure experienced in deep space. The first focus is on identifying new therapeutic targets to reduce the damaging effects of radiation by focusing on high throughput ge

Freud's 1926 conjecture is confirmed: evidence from the dorsal periaqueductal gray in mice that human psychological defense against internal instinctual threat evolved from animal motor defense against external predatory threat.

In 1926, Freud famously conjectured that the human ego defense of repression against an internal instinctual threat evolved from the animal motor defense of flight from an external predatory threat. Studies over the past 50 years mainly in rodents have investigated the neurobiology of the fight-or-flight reflex to external threats, which activates the emergency alarm system in the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG), the malfunction of which appears likely in panic and post-traumatic stress disorders, but perhaps also in some "non-emergent" conditions like social anxiety and "hysterical" convers

Civilian pilot exposure to ultraviolet and blue light and pilot use of sunglasses.

Population and animal studies indicate that long-term exposure to short-wavelength visible light and ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes increased risk of certain ocular pathologies such as cataracts and maculopathy. The potential risk to flight crew is unknown. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued guidance to pilots regarding sunglass selection; however, it is not known if this guidance is appropriate given pilots' unique occupational environment. A search and appraisal of the relevant literature was conducted which showed that within the airline pilot population, there is limited e

Universal wing- and fin-beat frequency scaling.

We derive an equation that applies for the wing-beat frequency of flying animals and to the fin-stroke frequency of diving animals like penguins and whales. The equation states that the wing/fin-beat frequency is proportional to the square root of the animal's mass divided by the wing area. Data for birds, insects, bats, and even a robotic bird-supplemented by data for whales and penguins that must swim to stay submerged-show that the constant of proportionality is to a good approximation the same across all species; thus the equation is universal. The wing/fin-beat frequency equation is deriv

Electrical synapses mediate visual approach behavior.

Detecting salient visual objects and orienting toward them are commonplace tasks for animals, yet the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain poorly understood. The fruit fly is an ideal model for a comprehensive analysis of feature detection mechanisms given its complete synaptic wiring diagrams, robust behavioral assays, and cell-type-specific gene expression datasets. We previously showed that columnar visual neurons T3 are required for saccadic orientation toward landscape features during flight. Here, we examine how signals downstream of T3 are processed in the central brain. We ident
