Risk Assessment of Fluoride Intake from Tea in the Republic of Ireland and its Implications for Public Health and Water Fluoridation.

The Republic of Ireland (RoI) is the only European Country with a mandatory national legislation requiring artificial fluoridation of drinking water and has the highest per capita consumption of black tea in the world. Tea is a hyperaccumulator of fluoride and chronic fluoride intake is associated with multiple negative health outcomes. In this study, fifty four brands of the commercially available black tea bag products were purchased and the fluoride level in tea infusions tested by an ion-selective electrode method. The fluoride content in all brands tested ranged from 1.6 to 6.1 mg/L, with…

An alternate technique of care using silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride in the management of root caries in aged care.

An alternate technique of care to prevent, arrest and manage root caries using aqueous silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride (AgF+SnF2) in aged care is demonstrated by three case studies. With increasing age, the inability to maintain ones own oral care from dementia, illness or frailty and polypharmacy induced salivary gland hypofunction will result in dental caries becoming a progessively greater burden for the elderly. Future generations of elders will live longer and need to maintain many more teeth longer than earlier generations. Both silver diamine fluoride (SDF)and AgF+SnF2 arr

The difference between ADP-beryllium fluoride and ADP-aluminium fluoride complexes of the spin-labeled myosin subfragment 1.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used for investigation of the structure of spin-labeled myosin subfragment 1 (S1) containing ADP and phosphate analogues, such as orthovanadate, aluminium fluoride (AlF4), and beryllium fluoride (BeFx). It has been shown that the local conformational changes in the region of Cys-707, induced by formation of the S1-ADP-BeFx complex, differ from those of S1 containing ADP-AlF4 or other phosphate analogues but are similar to the changes which occur in the presence of ADP or ATP gamma S. It is suggested that S1-ADP-AlF4 and S1-ADP-BeFx complex

Water fluoridation as a population strategy for reducing oral health inequalities: high-dimensional effect heterogeneity analysis using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most prevalent disease worldwide, associated with substantial health inequalities. Water fluoridation is a population strategy shown to effectively prevent dental caries; however, its impact on health inequalities remains inconclusive. We investigated the high-dimensional effect heterogeneity of water fluoridation in preventing dental caries among children in Australia. METHODS: Data from the National Child Oral Health Study-a national representative study conducted in 2012-14, linked to the information on lifetime exposure to fluoridated water-were analysed (…

Effects of community water fluoridation on child dental caries in remote Northern Territory, Australia: a difference-in-difference analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Community water fluoridation (CWF) is a cost-effective intervention to reduce dental caries at population level. This Australian study used a difference-in-difference (DiD) analysis to measure dental caries in children exposed to CWF in the Northern Territory (NT), Australia. METHODS: Oral health data obtained from the NT Department of Health contained 64 399 person-year observations from 2008 to 2020, totalling 24 546 children aged 1-17 years. Drinking water quality data for fluoride levels, held by the Power and Water Corporation, were obtained for 50 remote communities and li…

Water fluoridation between public health and public law: an assessment of regulations across countries and their preventive medicine implications.

BACKGROUND: Among health professionals and health policymakers concern is growing as to the difficulty of balancing the prevention of dental caries through cost-effective interventions and the need to limit unnecessary exposure of the population, and especially children, to environmental chemicals. In this respect, the use of water fluoridation to prevent tooth decay epitomizes the dilemma by raising questions relevant to both public health and public law, ranging from the balance of public health and medical self-determination, the division of powers between local or national authorities over…

The effect of community water fluoridation on dental caries in children and young people in England: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: The protective effect of community water fluoridation (CWF) against dental caries may be modified by secular changes in health behaviour. We aimed to determine the contemporary association between fluoride in public water supplies (PWS) and dental caries indicators and inequalities in England. METHODS: We estimated exposure to CWF and PWS fluoride concentrations from national monitoring data, using Geographic Information Systems and water supply boundaries, categorizing mean period exposure into <0.1, 0.1-<0.2, 0.2-<0.4, 0.4-<0.7 and ≥0.7 mg/l. We used area-level health outcome an…

Silver diamine fluoride versus sodium fluoride varnish in the treatment of proximal caries in primary molars: A randomized clinical trial.

The present randomized clinical trial with a split-mouth design investigated the effectiveness of 30% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) compared to 5% sodium flouride varnish (NaD) in arresting proximal caries in the primary molars of preschool-aged children. Forty-three children with contralateral initial proximal carious lesions on primary molars were included. Caries status at the baseline was recorded using clinical and radiographic indices. Lesions restricted to the enamel or the exterior third of dentin were included. A sufficient space was created between the contacts using elastic separato

Unexpected sequel to the application of silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride to an open carious lesion in a primary molar: A case report.

OBJECTIVES: The use of silver fluoride followed by stannous fluoride was designed for the treatment of open carious lesions in primary molars in dental outreach programs. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic when aerosol-producing procedures were inadvisable, one dental location started using it as the first stage in a two-visit restorative procedure for carious primary molars. If the gap between the fluoride application and the restoration placement stages was around 3-5 weeks it was noticed that a black friable crust appeared on the caries surface. To investigate further a normally discarde

Interaction between nuclear graphite and molten fluoride salts: a synchrotron radiation study of the substitution of graphitic hydrogen by fluoride ion.

The interaction between nuclear graphite and molten fluoride salts (46.5 mol % LiF/11.5 mol % NaF/42 mol % KF) is investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and C K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). It is found that there are a large number of H atoms in IG-110 nuclear graphite, which is attributed to the residual C-H bond after the graphitization process of petroleum coke and pitch binder. The elastic recoil detection analysis indicates that H atoms are uniformly distributed in IG-110 nuclear graphite, in excellent agreement with the XANES results. The XANES results indica

Effect of a low-fluoride-content, two-component rinse on fluoride uptake and on de--and remineralization of enamel lesions: an in vitro study.

The effect of calcium (Ca) concentrations and added ethanol on fluoride (F) depositions by experimental two-component rinses, each consisting of a Ca-containing and an F-containing component, was evaluated in an in vitro system. Among the tested rinses, a 3 mmol/l F two-component rinse with 200 mmol/l Ca and 10% v/v ethanol was found to produce the greatest F deposition relative to the F concentration in the rinse. Specifically, this rinse produced an F deposition that was about 7 times greater than a conventional 13.2-mmol/l sodium fluoride (NaF) rinse. In a second experiment, an in vitro pH

Fluoride distribution in the enamel of the mesio-lingual cusps of pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars of man with a low fluoride background.

The enamel fluoride concentrations at different depths were determined at 5 different sites on the mesio-lingual cusps of 16 pairs of erupted and unerupted third molars. Six successive acid etchings were done on each of the 5 sites. The 16 subjects (18 to 33 years) were living continuously since birth in a low fluoride area (F less than 0.10 ppm). They did not take any systemic fluoride since birth nor did they practise any other anti-caries fluoride program than brushing their teeth once or twice a day with fluoride-containing dentrifrices with about 1,000 ppm fluoride. [Cross-sectional comparison of the median eruption time for permanent teeth in children from fluoride poor and optimally fluoridated areas].

Nearly 57000 children (aged from 4 years, 4 months to 15 years, 9 months) of Karl-Marx-Stadt (1.0 ppm F) and Plauen (0.2 ppm F) were examined to compare the mean eruption times of permanent teeth before and after 12 years of water fluoridation. Whereas a direct influence of internally administered fluorides is to be excluded, an indirect action on the premolars may be assumed with certainty. The delayed eruption of all premolars in children of the area with optimally fluoridated water was the only systematic effect which could be detected. This normalization is explained by a prolonged stay of…
