[18F]FDG PET/CT for the diagnosis of diabetic foot osteomyelitis.

Infected foot ulcers are common complications in diabetic patients and frequently progress to osteomyelitis. [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has emerged as a practical and accurate imaging modality to differentiate between soft tissue infection and diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO). This study describes [18F]FDG PET/CT indications, diagnostic accuracy, imaging protocols, interpretation criteria and pitfalls for the work-up of DFO.

Medium-Vessel Vasculitis on FDG-PET/CT at Initial Presentation and Relapse.

A 76-year-old man presented with morning facial edema, forearm induration, testicular pain, and a major inflammatory syndrome. Contrast-enhanced CT was inconclusive. Conversely, FDG-PET/CT showed pathological uptake of medium-vessels, particularly in the right arm and facial soft tissues, leading to the diagnosis of medium-vessel vasculitis. Symptoms vanished after methotrexate and corticosteroid initiation. While undergoing progressive corticosteroid dose reduction, he presented with lower limb myalgia. A second FDG-PET/CT confirmed the relapse, with extensive uptake of the intermuscular perf

Pitfalls and artifacts in [18F]-FDG PET imaging in children with lymphoma.

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]-FDG) is a well-established imaging tool in adult oncology and is increasingly utilized also in pediatric oncology due to its ability to combine functional and anatomic information, thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy and improving patient management. However, [18F]-FDG uptake in children differs physiologically from adults, and this radiotracer is not tumor-specific, with uptake occurring in various benign conditions such as inflammation, infection, and trauma. Accurate interpretatio

Utility of FDG-PET in predicting the histology of relapsed or refractory lymphoma.

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a valuable prognostic tool in modern lymphoma care. In this study, we explored the use of quantitative FDG-PET parameters in predicting the histology of suspected relapsed or refractory (R/R) lymphoma. We retrospectively analyzed 290 FDG-PET scans performed for suspected R/R lymphoma. FDG-PET parameters measured were maximum and mean standardized uptake value (SUVMax and SUVMean), total metabolic tumor volume, and total lesion glycolysis (TLG). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to obtain the optimal thresh

Quantification of metabolic activity in the evaluation of cardiac sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disorder characterized by non-necrotizing granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis affecting multiple organs, notably the lungs and lymph nodes. Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), a subset of the disease predominantly involving the heart, significantly heightens the associated morbidity and mortality of sarcoidosis. Early detection of CS is crucial for optimal management. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) has emerged as an important diagnostic, prognostic, and monitoring tool for CS. Guidelines emphasize a combined

Impact of cannabidiol on brain glucose metabolism of C57Bl/6 male mice previously exposed to cocaine.

Despite evidence of the beneficial effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in animal models of cocaine use disorder (CUD), CBD neuronal mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of CBD treatment on brain glucose metabolism, in a CUD animal model, using [18F]FDG positron emission tomography (PET). Male C57Bl/6 mice were injected with cocaine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) every other day for 9 days, followed by 8 days of CBD administration (30 mg/kg, i.p.). After 48 h, animals were challenged with cocaine. Control animals received saline/vehicle. [18F]FDG PET was performed at four time po

Jaundice as a Rare Presentation of Neuroblastoma in a Pediatric Patient.

Neuroblastoma presenting as obstructive jaundice due to compression of the extrahepatic bile duct is very rare. An 11-month-old girl had sudden onset of jaundice. Initial imaging suggested a dilated biliary system caused by hepatic hilum mass. 18 F-FDG PET/CT showed a lesion with increased 18 F-FDG accumulation associated with surrounding enlarged lymph nodes. Surgical pathology confirmed the diagnosis of a poorly differentiated neuroblastoma associated with multiple lymph node metastases.

PET-Computed Tomography in Bone and Joint Infections.

This communication gives a short review of clinical utilities of PET/computed-tomography (CT) imaging in bone and joint infections. PET/CT imaging provides additional information over conventional modalities by providing information regarding disease extent in the bone as well as whole body, giving an idea of active pathology at the molecular level, and response evaluation. The roles of fluorodeoxyglucose have been examined in multiple indications, particularly in osteomyelitis, prosthetic joint infections, diabetic foot, and systemic diseases with skeletal involvement. The role of PET/CT imag

A Brief History of Nuclear Medicine Imaging of Infection.

For nearly 50 years, nuclear medicine has played an important role in the diagnosis of infection. Gallium citrate Ga 67 was one of the first, if not the first, radionuclide used for this purpose. Unfavorable imaging characteristics, a lack of specificity, and the long interval (2-3 days) between administration and imaging spurred the search for alternatives. At the present time, gallium 67 citrate is used primarily for differentiating acute tubular necrosis from interstitial nephritis and as an alternative for indications including sarcoid, spondylodiscitis, and fever of unknown origin, when 1

Automatic classification of lymphoma lesions in FDG-PET-Differentiation between tumor and non-tumor uptake.

INTRODUCTION: The automatic classification of lymphoma lesions in PET is a main topic of ongoing research. An automatic algorithm would enable the swift evaluation of PET parameters, like texture and heterogeneity markers, concerning their prognostic value for patients outcome in large datasets. Moreover, the determination of the metabolic tumor volume would be facilitated. The aim of our study was the development and evaluation of an automatic algorithm for segmentation and classification of lymphoma lesions in PET. METHODS: Pre-treatment PET scans from 60 Hodgkin lymphoma patients from the

Differential Effects of Tau Stage, Lewy Body Pathology, and Substantia Nigra Degeneration on 18F-FDG PET Patterns in Clinical Alzheimer Disease.

Comorbid Lewy body (LB) pathology is common in Alzheimer disease (AD). The effect of LB copathology on 18F-FDG PET patterns in AD is yet to be studied. We analyzed associations of neuropathologically assessed tau pathology, LB pathology, and substantia nigra neuronal loss (SNnl) with antemortem 18F-FDG PET hypometabolism in patients with a clinical AD presentation. Methods: Twenty-one patients with autopsy-confirmed AD without LB neuropathologic changes (LBNC) (pure-AD), 24 with AD and LBNC copathology (AD-LB), and 7 with LBNC without fulfilling neuropathologic criteria for AD (pure-LB) were s

Update on the diagnosis of encephalitis.

Autoimmune encephalitis are brain inflammatory processes that are classified into two main groups according to the underlying pathogenic mechanism: antibodies to intracellular antigens (paraneoplastic) and antibodies to extracellular or neuronal surface antigens. The clinical manifestations of autoimmune encephalitis are very varied and non-specific. Complementary tests included in its clinical diagnosis include determination of antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI may show characteristic patterns such as mesial temporal involvement, although in

[Comparative analysis of the brain distribution of [18F]FDG in populations of patients with Alzheimer's disease with or without family history of dementia].

Hereditary forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and early-onset forms have more brain damage than sporadic or late-onset forms at the time of diagnosis (1, 2). Data in the literature are contradictory concerning familial forms without known heredity or mutation. The aim of this study was to compare the brain distribution of FDG between two populations of patients with a clinical diagnosis of sporadic AD according to the presence or not of a first degree family history of dementia. We retrospectively included 243 patients with clinical diagnosis of AD who underwent brain FDG PET imaging between 20

[Hybrid PET/MRI for inflammatory cardiomyopathy].

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic work-up for myocarditis and inflammatory cardiomyopathy is challenging for its different aetiologies, phenotypes and stages. METHODICAL INNOVATIONS AND CHALLENGES: Cardiac PET/MRI is an excellent tool for myocardial tissue characterization with MRI as well as for diagnosis of active myocardial inflammation with PET. The combination of MRI and PET is rather synergistic than only summative: myocardial changes detected by MRI can be differentiated with PET to (potentially still reversible) active inflammation vs. chronic and inactive (irreversible) scars. The strengths of
