Nine patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were studied with Ga-67 imaging in search for a site of infection. Different degrees and two patterns of Ga-67 lung uptake scoring in comparison with liver uptake were demonstrated. All patients had diffuse lung uptake, whereas five of them also showed additional focal lung activity. In only one patient was an abdominal focal uptake detected. Chest radiographs of all patients revealed diffuse and focal lung infiltrates that correlated with the Ga-67 uptake patterns. Therefore, Ga-67 imaging was unhelpful in differentiating patients

Non-typhoid Salmonella infection in man has been divided into five clinical groups: gastroenteritis, enteric fever, bacteraemia, chronic carrier state and localized infection. This classification has neither pathogenic nor prognostic significance. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 183 patients with extraintestinal salmonellosis who presented to our institution during a period of 32 years. Patients were classified into four groups: primary bacteraemia (PB), enteritis-associated bacteraemia (secondary bacteraemia) (SB), digestive focal infection (DI) and non-digestive focal infection (ND…

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is the result of chronic renal infection. It is very rare in childhood and the focal form, which is said to be more common in children, is often misdiagnosed as a renal tumor. We report a case of a focal XPN in a 14-year-old girl. The true preoperative diagnosis may be very hard in children especially in the focal form but it seems to be possible by the help of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the usefulness of cranial computed tomography (CT) in the emergency department evaluation of HIV-infected patients and patients with risk factors for HIV infection who present with neurologic complaints.
DESIGN: Retrospective review of imaging reports and medical records of patients who visited the ED from March 1991 through March 1992.
SETTING: Urban university ED.
PARTICIPANTS: Patients with HIV infection or risk factors for infection who underwent emergency cranial CT after presenting to the ED with headache, altered mental status, focal deficits, or other

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical features, history and association with intestinal disease in central nervous system (CNS) S. bovis infections.
METHODS: Four cases of S. bovis CNS infections from our institution are presented. Additionally a systematic literature review of articles published between 1975 and 2021 in PubMed/MEDLINE was conducted.
RESULTS: 52 studies with 65 cases were found; five were excluded because of incomplete data. In total 64 cases were analyzed including our four cases: 55 with meningitis and 9 with intracranial focal infections. Both infections were frequently as…

Focal Epithelial Hyperplasia or Multifocal Epithelial Hyperplasia (MEH), also known as Heck's disease, is considered a rare pathology of the oral mucosa associated with human papillomavirus types 13 and 32. For reasons not fully understood, MEH disproportionally affects specific populations of indigenous groups around the world. After the first reports in Native Americans, the epidemiology of the disease has been described in different geographical regions mainly related to particular indigenous populations, the majority of the studies are clinical case reports, but the biological determinants

Dental infection as a cause of epidural abscess is rare compared with other forms of intracranial suppurations. A 10-year-old boy was seen because of headaches and fever. There was no history of otitis media or sinusitis, but he had sought care for dental complaints. The patient was from an upper-middle-class family, was not immunocompromised, and had no other risk factor for a major infection. A CT brain scan confirmed a frontal epidural abscess. The patient underwent emergency surgery for evacuation of the epidural abscess, followed by antimicrobial therapy. His condition improved remarkably

Previous reports have noted an association between membranous nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis with Guillain-Barre syndrome. We report a case of Campylobacter enteritis, which was complicated by both focal segmental glomerulosclerosis of the collapsing variety and Guillain-Barre syndrome, and propose that Campylobacter may be the common link between the glomerular disease and Guillain-Barre syndrome. We also briefly review previous reports of kidney disease associated with Campylobacter infection.

We reviewed eight patients with necrotizing fasciitis of odontogenic origin. There were three women and five men, mean age 58 (range 46-72), and none had any associated medical condition such as diabetes. All cases had symptoms of toothache for a mean duration of 34 days (range 26-42) before they sought treatment. Infection originated in the molar teeth region, and initially presented as an odontogenic or periodontal abscess. The clinical features of necrotizing fasciitis became apparent only after the superficial fascia had been invaded. The transient unusually reddish hue for a dark skin mig

BACKGROUND: Pustulotic arthro-osteitis (PAO) is a major comorbidity of palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), which is frequently seen in Japanese patients. To determine the characteristics of Japanese patients with PAO, we conducted a multicenter, retrospective epidemiologic survey at four university hospitals.
METHODS: Clinical features including age, gender, duration of disease, extrapalmoplantar lesion, smoking habit, focal infection, site of joint pain, bone scintigraphy with Technetium99 , and therapies were retrospectively evaluated.
RESULTS: In total, 165 patients with PAO were identified am…

INTRODUCTION: Pleural empyema as a focal infection due to Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is rare and most commonly described among immunosuppressed patients or patients who suffer from sickle cell anaemia and lung malignancies.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we present an 81-year-old immunocompetent Greek woman with bacteraemia and pleural empyema due to Salmonella Enteritidis without any gastrointestinal symptoms.
CONCLUSION: In our case, we suggest that patient's pleural effusion secondary to heart failure was complicated by empyema and that focal intravascular infection was the cause o…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: For well over 100 years, it has been appreciated that maxillary dental infections can cause sinusitis. This insight has been largely overlooked with the advent of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and its emphasis on the osteomeatal complex. We review several recent case series and reviews of odontogenic sinusitis that characterize and discuss emerging diagnostic modalities in odontogenic sinusitis.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent publications on odontogenic sinusitis, up to 40% of chronic bacterial maxillary sinus infections are attributed to a dental source, which is f
