Differences in Presentation and Outcomes by Type and Severity of Food Impaction Symptoms in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal food impaction (EFI) commonly occurs in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), but its spectrum of severity remains incompletely described. AIMS: To determine whether presentation and outcomes of EoE differ based on type of EFI. METHODS: Patients with newly diagnosed EoE were categorized by EFI type: those with transient symptoms, those with an emergency department (ED) visit but no esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), and those with an ED visit and EGD. Patient, EoE, and treatment data were collected. We compared characteristics and treatment responses and used multinomial logi

Quality of neonatal health care in comprehensive specialized hospitals, Amhara Region, Ethiopia: a retrospective study with neonatal death audit.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal health is one of the targets for the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that aim to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1 000 live births in 2030. However, the world is not on track to achieve this target. The problem has worsened in many low-income countries, including Ethiopia, due to a fragile health system, as well as health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict, food insecurity and climate change. According to the Mini Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey, neonatal mortality is unacceptably high in Ethiopia in general, and in Amhara region

Are rural health centers prepared for floods? An assessment using the WHO Hospital safety index in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Flood hazards are increasingly frequent and severe in developing countries, including Pakistan, posing major challenges to primary healthcare delivery. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, recurrent floods damage infrastructure, disrupt medical services, and impair the operational readiness of Rural Health Centers, undermining access to care for vulnerable populations. Despite high flood exposure, evidence on Rural Health Center preparedness remains scarce. This study aimed to assess the preparedness level of Rural Health Centers using the Hospital Safety Index in flood-prone districts of Khyber

Preliminary Incidence and Trends of Infections Caused by Pathogens Transmitted Commonly Through Food - Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, 10 U.S. Sites, 2022.

Each year, infections from major foodborne pathogens are responsible for an estimated 9.4 million illnesses, 56,000 hospitalizations, and 1,350 deaths in the United States (1). To evaluate progress toward prevention of enteric infections in the United States, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) conducts surveillance for laboratory-diagnosed infections caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food at 10 U.S. sites. During 2020-2021, FoodNet detected decreases in many infections that were due to behavioral modifications, public health interventions, and cha

A 2019 Outbreak Investigation of Hepatitis A Virus Infections in the United States Linked to Imported Fresh Blackberries.

Globally, hepatitis A virus (HAV) is one of the most common agents of acute viral hepatitis and causes approximately 1.4 million cases and 90,000 deaths annually despite the existence of an effective vaccine. In 2019, federal, state, and local partners investigated a multi-state outbreak of HAV infections linked to fresh blackberries sourced from multiple suppliers in Michoacán, Mexico. A total of 20 individuals with outbreak-related HAV infection were reported in seven states, including 11 hospitalizations, and no deaths. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control

Developing a rehabilitation intervention for eating and drinking difficulties following stroke through co-design stakeholder workshops.

BACKGROUND: Eating and drinking difficulties are common after stroke and have profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Although mealtime group activities are commonly used in rehabilitation settings to support recovery, these approaches are rarely standardised, systematically developed, or evidence-informed, and there is limited research evaluating structured group-based mealtime interventions in stroke care. Co-produced, contextually grounded interventions may improve engagement and clinical relevance. This study aimed to co-design a breakfast group intervention to address e

The Climate-Health Divide: How Climate Change Will Rewire Health Care Across High-, Middle-, and Low-Income Settings.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognised not only as an environmental emergency but also as a structural determinant of health and health-system performance. Its clinical consequences will not be distributed evenly: high-income countries face rising heat mortality, infrastructure fragility, ageing-related vulnerability, and the need to decarbonise technologically intensive care; middle- and low-income countries face heterogeneous but often more compressed combinations of heat, infectious disease, food insecurity, water stress, displacement, conflict-related fragility, and limited

Feeding and eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a group of prevalent psychiatric illnesses with an onset in early to late adolescence-a time of significant neural development, physical and psychologic growth, and self-exploration. The etiology and neurobiology of EDs are not well understood, but EDs are recognized as brain-based illnesses with serious acute and long-term consequences if undertreated or ignored. Two EDs, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have historically been the primary EDs of focus. The DSM-5 updated diagnostic criteria for these disorders added two more: binge-eating disorder (BED

PHLS overview of communicable diseases 1997: results of a priority setting exercise.

In early 1997, the PHLS Overview of Communicable Diseases (OVCD) Committee carried out a consultation exercise to inform the development of PHLS priorities in communicable diseases for the years 1997 to 1999. The views of PHLS senior staff and scientific committees and consultants in communicable disease control in district health authorities were sought by postal questionnaire, and several organisations of health professionals were asked for their views on the initial findings. The main findings of the exercise are summarised in three areas of priority. Priority 1 diseases--those of major imp

Comparison of the Performance of Skin Prick, ImmunoCAP, and ISAC Tests in the Diagnosis of Patients with Allergy.

BACKGROUND: Allergy is diagnosed from typical symptoms, and tests are performed to incriminate the suspected precipitant. Skin prick tests (SPTs) are commonly performed, inexpensive, and give immediate results. Laboratory tests (ImmunoCAP) for serum allergen-specific IgE antibodies are usually performed more selectively. The immuno-solid phase allergen chip (ISAC) enables testing for specific IgE against multiple allergen components in a multiplex assay. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed clinic letters, case notes, and laboratory results of 118 patients attending the National Adult Allergy
