BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects several cognitive functions and causes altered motor function. Fine motor deficits during object manipulation are evident in other neurological conditions, but have not been assessed in dementia patients yet.
OBJECTIVE: Investigate reactive and anticipatory grip force control in response to unexpected and expected load force perturbation in AD.
METHODS: Reactive and anticipatory grip force was investigated using a grip-device with force sensors. In this pilot study, fifteen AD patients and fourteen healthy controls performed a catching task. They

When lameness occurs in a load-bearing limb, compensatory load adjustments are made in the other supporting limbs. The vertical component of the ground reaction force, as measured by force platform analysis, reflects these adjustments. This study describes the pattern of vertical ground reaction force redistribution during experimental, chronic hindlimb lameness in dogs. The peak and impulse of the vertical ground reaction force were measured and described in 13 dogs before, and at 2, 6, and 12 weeks after transection of the cranial cruciate ligament. These variables were compared among limbs.

Caecilians are predominantly burrowing, elongate, limbless amphibians that have been relatively poorly studied. Although it has been suggested that the sturdy and compact skulls of caecilians are an adaptation to their head-first burrowing habits, no clear relationship between skull shape and burrowing performance appears to exist. However, the external forces encountered during burrowing are transmitted by the skull to the vertebral column, and, as such, may impact vertebral shape. Additionally, the muscles that generate the burrowing forces attach onto the vertebral column and consequently m

Running on a lower-body positive-pressure (LBPP) treadmill allows effects of weight support on leg muscle activation to be assessed systematically, and has the potential to facilitate rehabilitation and prevent overloading. The aim was to study the effect of running with weight support on leg muscle activation and to estimate relative knee and ankle joint forces. Runners performed 6-min running sessions at 2.22 m/s and 3.33 m/s, at 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% body weight (BW). Surface electromyography, ground reaction force, and running characteristics were measured. Relative knee and ankle j

Children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy (CP) often exhibit excess variability in their movements. To investigate the relationship between excess variability and single-joint control in these children, we compared their force variations during single-joint isometric tasks to age-matched controls. Subjects performed isometric biceps contractions at six target force levels scaled to their maximum voluntary contraction. Similar studies in healthy adults have shown that movement variability exhibits characteristics of signal-dependent noise (SDN). We look for the first time at whethe

Computation of redox potential of cofactors in biological systems requires an accurate description of the interaction between the redox cofactors and the biomolecular environment and extensive conformational sampling. Seeking to achieve a quantitative leap in redox potential evaluation for flavoproteins, we report here the calibration of sets of parameters to describe flavin molecules in various redox states in the framework of AMOEBA, a multipolar and polarizable force field. We calibrate both the isoalloxazine ring in the five biologically relevant redox states and the polyol chain needed to

The purpose of this study is to determine if increasing the potential risk of slipping on support surface materials decreases postural dynamics and task performance. Seated subjects were asked to exert maximum horizontal two-handed isometric pushes as quickly as possible on a dynamometric bar. Reaction forces exerted at seat (Rxs and Rzs) and footrest (Rxf and Rzf) were measured using force sensors. A dynamometric bar measured horizontal push force (Fx). Global adherence ratio (micro) was calculated. Three support surface materials, characterised by different coefficients of friction, were tes

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic training with visual force feedback can lead to immediate improvements in force moderation. However, the long-term retention of this kind of learning and its potential decay are yet unclear.
METHODS: A laparoscopic resection task and force sensing apparatus were designed to assess the benefits of visual force feedback training. Twenty-two male university students with no previous experience in laparoscopy underwent relevant FLS proficiency training. Participants were randomly assigned to either a control or treatment group. Both groups trained on the task for 2 weeks

Sarcopenia is characterized by a progressive loss of muscle strength and physical performance that frequently exceeds the decline predicted by muscle mass alone. This discrepancy indicates that functional deterioration is shaped not only by the force-generating capacity of skeletal muscle, but also by the tissues responsible for transmitting and integrating that force. In this Review, we examine sarcopenia through the biology of the muscle-tendon unit, encompassing skeletal muscle, tendon, and their specialized interface. We discuss how systemic aging processes, including metabolic dysfunction

AIM: The skeletal muscle Cl- channels, the ClC-1 channels, stabilize the resting membrane potential and dampen muscle fibre excitability. This study explored whether ClC-1 inhibition can recover nerve-stimulated force in isolated muscle under conditions of compromised neuromuscular transmission akin to disorders of myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome.
METHODS: Nerve-muscle preparations were isolated from rats. Preparations were exposed to pre-or post-synaptic inhibitors (ω-agatoxin, elevated extracellular Mg2+ , α-bungarotoxin or tubocurarine). The potential of ClC-1 inhibition (9-AC

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Facet joint orientation and facet tropism (FT) are presented as the potential anatomical predisposing factors for lumbar degenerative changes that may lead in turn to early degeneration and herniation of the corresponding disc or degenerative spondylolisthesis. However, no biomechanical study of this concept has been reported.
PURPOSE: To investigate the biomechanical influence of the facet orientation and FT on stress on the corresponding segment.
STUDY DESIGN: Finite element analysis.
METHODS: Three models, F50, F55, and F60 were simulated with different facet joint or

BACKGROUND: Engineered heart tissue (EHT) is being developed for clinical implantation in heart failure or congenital heart disease and therefore requires a comprehensive functional characterization and scale-up of EHT. Here we explored the effects of scale-up of self-organizing EHT and present detailed electrophysiologic and contractile functional characterization.
METHODS: Fibers from EHT were generated from self-organizing neonatal rat cardiac cells (0.5×10(6) to 3×10(6)/fiber) on fibrin. We characterized contractile patterns and measured contractile function using a force transducer, and

The present study investigated alterations in multi-element coordination in female adults with dystonic cerebral palsy (DCP), focusing on finger forces and forearm muscle activity. Despite their clinical significance, coordination impairments in this population remain to be fully elucidated. Participants diagnosed with DCP and healthy controls performed maximal and submaximal repetitive isometric force-production tasks involving finger flexion and extension. Electromyographic activity was recorded from forearm flexor and extensor muscles. The analysis of finger-force and muscle-activation patt

The isometric force-length (F-L) and isotonic force-velocity (F-V) relationships characterize the contractile properties of skeletal muscle under controlled conditions, yet it remains unclear how these properties relate to in vivo muscle function. Here, we map the in situ F-L and F-V characteristics of guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) lateral gastrocnemius (LG) to the in vivo operating range during walking and running. We test the hypothesis that muscle fascicles operate on the F-L plateau, near the optimal length for force (L0) and near velocities that maximize power output (Vopt) during walkin

Precise quantification of microscopic forces in optical trapping is fundamental to a wide range of single-molecule biophysics. Conventional calibration techniques, however, require extensive datasets (typically exceeding 104 samples) to achieve statistical convergence in the presence of thermal noise and nonequilibrium artifacts. In this work, we employ the stochastic force inference (SFI) method, which combines information theory with statistical physics, to reconstruct deterministic force fields from noisy stochastic trajectories in optical traps. We demonstrate that the SFI-based calibratio

The forced turnout has a perceived risk of development of hallux valgus (HV) in ballet dancers. We determined how the forced turnout affects the sagittal mobility of the first tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint, which is one of the pathogenic factors of HV development. Seventeen female ballet dancers (body mass index: 18.2 ± 1.8 kg/m2) were included and performed demi-plié in control, functional turnout, and forced turnout conditions. Ultrasound imaging synchronized with a three-dimensional motion analysis system was used for measuring the vertical locations of the first metatarsal and medial cuneifo

Characterization and determination of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) plays an important role in molecular biological science. In this study, the effect of aminoglycosides (AGs: streptomycin, gentamycin, lincomycin and clindamycin) on interactions between bovine serum albumin (BSA) was evaluated employing imaging and probing adhesion event by AFM. Multi-spectroscopy and molecular docking were supplementary to investigate the acting forces of the effect. AFM measurements revealed the aggregation of BSA grains and changes of adhesion forces at single molecule level. With adhesion forces betw

Intermolecular interaction potentials of the carbon tetrachloride dimer in 12 orientations have been calculated using the Hartree-Fock self-consistent theory and the second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory. We have employed basis sets from Pople's medium size basis sets [up to 6-311++G(3df,3pd)] to Dunning's correlation consistent basis sets (up to aug-cc-pVQZ). The calculated MP2 potential data were employed to parametrize a four-site force field for molecular simulations. We performed molecular dynamics simulations using the ab initio force field and compared the simulation res

Eccentric contraction-induced (ECC-induced) force loss is a hallmark of murine dystrophin-deficient (mdx) skeletal muscle that is used to assess efficacy of potential therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. While virtually all key proteins involved in muscle contraction have been implicated in ECC force loss, a unifying mechanism that orchestrates force loss across such diverse molecular targets has not been identified. We showed that correcting defective hydrogen sulfide (H2S) signaling in mdx muscle prevented ECC force loss. We also showed that the cysteine proteome of skeletal muscle fun
