BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Humeral shaft fractures are often associated with radial nerve palsy (RNP) (8-16%). The primary aim of this systematic review was to assess the incidence of primary and secondary RNP in closed humeral shaft fractures. The secondary aim was to compare the recovery rate of primary RNP and the incidence of secondary RNP between operative and non-operative treatment.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in 'Trip Database', 'Embase' and 'PubMed' to identify original studies reporting on RNP in closed humeral shaft fractures. The Coleman Methodology Score wa

BACKGROUND: The most prevalent form of facial bone fractures is nasal fractures. The surgical procedures used for these fractures are relatively simple, but complete correction is not easy because the nasal bone is small and identifying the fracture site by palpation is difficult. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of intraoperative surgical navigation systems in nasal bone fracture surgery through a prospective analysis.
METHODS: Between February 2019 and July 2019, 25 navigation-assisted closed reductions of nasal fractures were performed. Preoperative computed tomography images w

Closed reduction and percutaneous osteosynthesis is an alternative to the open procedure for articular fractures of distal tibia of children. 38 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The measured parameters were : the score of Gleizes and the discrepancies between preoperative radiographic and CT scan measurements and postoperative radiographs. A significant correlation was found between the gap and the step-off in preoperative radiographic and CT scan. A significant decrease of the gap and step-off displacement was noticed after surgery. The Gleizes scoring showed 35 good results, 2 average

BACKGROUND: Clavicle fractures are common clinical problems, accounting for approximately 10% of all fractures. Neer's type II fractures disrupt the integrity of the coracoclavicular ligament and, therefore, are inherently unstable, requiring an extended period time to achieve bone union and being associated with a high rate of non- or malunion. Restoration of the stability of the distal clavicle is an important factor to decrease the rate of non- or malunion. As such, the aim of our study was to describe our technique of indirect osteosynthesis, using a minimally invasive closed-loop double e

The intraoperative determination of rotation in closed intramedullar nailing of tibial fractures is difficult. In this study, a more reliable method was used and it was a more practical means of checking rotation intra-operatively for tibia diaphysis fractures. 42 patients who presented with a unilateral tibia diaphyseal fracture. were randomly divided into two groups. In Group 1, the Intraoperative Rotation Control Method (IRCM) was used and compared with Group 2 as the control group. The Delta Rotation obtained from the MRI measurements were recorded and the Mean Delta Rotation (MDR) was obt

AIMS: Distal tibia physeal fractures can lead to growth complications such as premature physeal closure (PPC), angular deformity and leg length discrepancy. The aim of our study was to systematically review the literature to assess whether open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is associated with lower rates of PPC compared to closed treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched several databases from 1966 to 2016 for studies that evaluated ORIF versus closed treatment of distal tibia physeal fractures. We performed a meta-analysis using a random effects model to pool odds ratios (OR) fo

Effective treatment of pediatric both bone forearm fractures consists of timely restoration of anatomic alignment with manipulation and immobilization, often accomplished with the aid of procedural sedation in the emergency department setting. The current lack of consensus regarding a safe and optimal regimen may result in inadequate sedation, compromised quality of reduction, or patient harm. The current study was conducted to answer the following questions for pediatric both bone forearm fractures treated with closed reduction with either ketamine or propofol procedural sedation: (1) Is ther

This study analysed the relationship between complaints and mandibular function after closed treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle in a prospective study. In a 1-year follow-up, complaints were assessed during physical examination and function was assessed using the mandibular function impairment questionnaire (MFIQ), scoring range 0-68. Data from 114 patients (41 women, 73 men), mean age 28.1 years (SD 13.3), were available. On average the MFIQ scores were low 3.4 (SD 7.3). Ten patients (9%) experienced pain and 45 (39%) patients had a MFIQ score > 0. Mean mouth opening was 51.9 mm

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary fixation is the treatment of choice for closed diaphyseal fractures of femur and tibia. The axial and rotational stability of conventional interlocking nails depends primarily on locking screws. This method uses increased operating time and increased radiation exposure. An intramedullary implant that can minimize these disadvantages is obviously better. Expandable intramedullary nail does not rely on interlocking screws and achieves axial and rotational stability on hydraulic expansion of the nail. We analyzed 32 simple fractures of shaft of femur and tibia treated b

Twenty-two patients underwent surgery for 23 complex articular fractures of the distal radius of C.3 type, according to the AO classification. The surgical treatment consisted, in all cases, of a closed, or limited-open, reduction and external fixation. The functional and radiographic results were analysed at a mean follow-up of 40 months. This retrospective study confirms that satisfactory functional results where obtained in 12 out of the 15 wrists where all the intra and extra-articular parameters of the Fernandez' criteria where respected. For those wrists where keeping with Fernandez' cri

Fractures of the proximal humerus in children are rare and constitute only 3% of all epiphyseal injuries. From 1992 to 2002 sixteen patients aged 4 - 15 years with a displaced fracture of the proximal humerus were treated at our level I trauma unit. The mean follow-up of the patients was 23.8 months (8 - 72). Ten children had a metaphyseal fracture and six a Salter and Harris Type II injury. Only one metaphyseal fracture was treated conservatively; the other patients underwent surgery (ORIF [= open reduction internal fixation] in ten patients, CRIF [= closed reduction internal fixation] in fiv

Twenty-nine patients were evaluated a minimum of ten years (average: 16 years) after femoral supracondylar fracture. Fracture type, mechanism of injury, and age of 14 patients initially treated nonoperatively were similar to those of 15 patients treated with nonrigid internal fixation. Complications were more common and more severe in the surgically-treated group. Knee range of motion remained permanently decreased in both groups, averaging 3 degrees lack of extension to 63 degrees of flexion. In both groups, 60% had symptoms of knee pain, instability, and gait abnormalities. Long-term poor re
