A case of Kartagener's syndrome with combined aplasia of frontal and sphenoid sinuses and hypoplasia of maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

Kartagener's syndrome (KS), characterized by a triad of bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and situs inversus, is a subset of an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder of primary ciliary dyskinesia. We report the case of a 35-year-old male who presented with a history of intermittent episodes of productive cough, breathlessness, and cold since childhood. High resolution computed tomography of chest revealed bronchiectatic changes, dextrocardia, and right-sided aortic arch. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen revealed situs inversus. CT of the paranasal sinuses revealed combined aplas

[A case report of epidural abscess caused by acute frontal sinusitis].

Epidural epidural abscess is usually secondary to acute frontal sinusitis and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. Nose-derived intracranial connplications are less common than otogenic ones, and infections caused by nasal and sinus trauma, foreign bodies and surgery are more common than those caused by inflammation alone. The frontal lobe abscess caused by frontal sinusitis is more common in brain abscess with nasal intracranial complications.

Odontogenic sinusitis involving the frontal sinus: is middle meatal antrostomy enough?

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Inflammatory conditions of the posterior maxillary teeth may cause odontogenic sinusitis (OS), which most commonly inv … SION: Frontal sinusotomy is apparently not necessary to resolve OS involving the frontal sinus. The frontal sinusitis may reflect a reactive process that regresses spontaneously once the underlying odontogenic condition is addressed and a middle meatal antrostomy had been performed. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2B.

Pott's puffy tumour and intracranial complications of frontal sinusitis in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: A Pott's puffy tumour is a subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone secondary to frontal sinusitis. Intracranial complications are seen in approximately 40 per cent of cases and are potentially life-threatening; such complications have not previously been reported in pregnancy. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old woman at 35 weeks' gestation presented with a history of frontal headaches and swelling, periorbital oedema, pain and chemosis. Imaging confirmed Pott's puffy tumour with right-sided epidural empyema and periorbital cellulitis. A multidisciplinary team was inv…

Frontal sinus mini-trephination for acute sinusitis complicated by intracranial infection.

INTRODUCTION: Acute bacterial sinusitis is common in the pediatric population. Intracranial spread of infection is a rare but life-threatening complication of acute sinusitis. Due to the infrequent presentation of this complication, there are no well-defined management protocols for the acute sinusitis. CASE SERIES: We present three pediatric cases where children presented with intracranial sepsis, and the underlying source of infection was from the paranasal sinuses. In all cases, endoscopic sinus surgery was performed in the acute setting, with the use of frontal sinus mini-trephines playin

[Endoscopic management of chronic frontal sinusitis in the Negev population, Israel].

BACKGROUND: Chronic frontal sinusitis is a relatively common condition, yet one with potential for complications. The treatment of chronic frontal sinusitis has always been a challenge for the otolaryngologist, and it remains so even in the age of endoscopic sinus surgery. Successful treatment is evaluated by both subjective (patient history) and objective (radiologic and endoscopic) criteria. PURPOSE: This article aims to present our experience in endoscopic surgery for chronic frontal sinusitis, with particular focus on the importance of the wide opening of the naso-frontal outflow tract, w…

Complications of frontal sinusitis in adolescents: case presentations and treatment options.

Frontal sinusitis in adolescents can be a serious condition because of the severity of potential complications and rapid progression of disease. These complications may arise as a result of extension of the infection intracranially, to the frontal bone, and to the orbit. Infection may spread hematogenously or by direct extension. A series of seven adolescent patients with complications of frontal sinusitis is presented. Surgical options are necessitated by the location and extent of infection and include trephination, frontal sinus obliteration, and craniotomy. Recent advances in endoscopic si…

Association of Frontal Recess Anatomy and Uncinate Process Variations With Frontal Sinusitis: A CT-Based Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal sinusitis is influenced by anatomical variations that impact sinus drainage pathways. Among these, frontal recess cells classified by the International Frontal Sinus Anatomy Classification (IFAC) and uncinate process variations play a key role. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between these anatomical structures and the development of frontal sinusitis. METHODS: This retrospective study included 144 patients (70 with frontal sinusitis, 74 controls) who underwent paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT). Frontal recess cells were evaluated according to …

Case Report: Pott's Edematous Tumor: Complicated Frontal Sinusitis - An Unremembered Diagnosis.

Pott's Puffy tumor, also called Pott's edematous tumor (PET), is a subperiosteal abscess of the frontal bone, associated with osteomyelitis … tory follow-up after hospital. PET, which often results from an underdiagnosed or partially treated frontal sinusitis, is a condition that must be promptly recognized and directed to an adequate therapeutic approach due to the risk of serious complications that it entails.

Superior Branch Palsy of the Oculomotor Nerve Caused by Frontal Sinusitis.

Chronic rhinosinusitis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases with a significant impact on the affected patients. Orbital complications, one of the emergent complications of chronic rhinosinusitis, can be occurred in frontal sinusitis. For early diagnosis and therapy of orbital complications, proper evaluation is essential to prevent loss of vision.Recently, the authors diagnose and treat completely a 60-year-old man with isolated unilateral superior branch palsy of the oculomotor nerve caused by frontal sinusitis. Four days after draining the frontal sinusitis, the patient recovered …

Outcomes of chronic frontal sinusitis treated with ethmoidectomy: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: In medically refractory chronic frontal sinusitis, ethmoidectomy without instrumentation of the frontal ostium may resolve frontal disease. Our aim was to determine the efficacy of ethmoidectomy alone for the treatment of chronic frontal sinusitis. METHODS: Adults with chronic rhinosinusitis prospectively enrolled in a multicenter study who demonstrated frontal sinusitis on computed tomography were divided into 2 groups: (1) endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) incorporating ethmoidectomy, but excluding frontal sinusotomy; and (2) ESS incorporating frontal sinusotomy. The primary outcom…

Intracranial complications of frontal sinusitis in children: Pott's puffy tumor revisited.

The objective of the present study is to describe the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial complications of frontal sinusitis (Pott's puffy tumor) in a series of pediatric patients at our institution. A rare entity, Pott's puffy tumor has been reported in only 21 pediatric cases in the literature of the antibiotic era. The hospital records and radiographic files at Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, USA, over the previous 16 years were retrospectively reviewed in a search for patients with the diagnosis of Pott's puffy tumor, defined as scalp swelling and associated int…

[Characteristics of postoperative period in surgical treatment of chronic frontal sinusitis].

During the last 5 years 132 patients underwent frontal-ethmoidal trepanation. Recurrences were observed in 27 (20%) patients with nonspecific immune deficiency, frequent respiratory viral infections and microbial virulence. The major cause of recurrences was inadequacy of the frontal-nasal ostium. Recurrences occurred more frequently in patients with orbital and intracranial complications of frontitis, traumatic frontitis, and abnormal anatomic relations of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. It is recommended to carry out postoperative conservative therapy including antibacterial, antiedematou
