Protective effects of gallic acid against Vibrio parahaemolyticus-induced translucent post-larvae disease in Litopenaeus vannamei: insights into antibacterial and anti-virulence mechanisms.

Translucent post-larvae disease (TPD) is a lethal syndrome causing high mortality in post-larvae of Litopenaeus vannamei. This study investigated the protective efficacy of gallic acid (GA), a non-antibiotic compound, against TPD induced by a field isolate Vibrio parahaemolyticus TS-GE (V. para. TS-GE). Immersion challenge assays confirmed the high virulence of V. para. TS-GE, as it caused 100 % mortality in post-larvae within 24 h at 2.82 × 107 CFU/mL. Whole-genome sequencing revealed its genome comprised two chromosomes (3.50 Mb and 1.92 Mb) and three plasmids (69.7 kb, 60.7 kb, 60.5 kb). Th…

Enhanced biosynthesis of CdS nanoparticles through Arabidopsis thaliana phytochelatin synthase-modified Escherichia coli with fluorescence effect in detection of pyrogallol and gallic acid.

In this work, CdS nanoparticles (CdS NPs) biosynthesized through Arabidopsis thaliana phytochelatin synthase-modified Escherichia coli (CdS/AtPCS1-E. coli) with fluorescence (FL) performance for detection of pyrogallol and gallic acid was investigated. Through expression of the AtPCS1 gene inside E. coli cells by pET28b vector, biosynthesis of CdS NPs was greatly enhanced due to generation of phytochelatins (PCs, (γ-Glu-Cys)n-Gly, n ≥ 2) for efficient capture of Cd2+. The expression of AtPCS1 and concentration of glutathione (GSH) and PCs were detected by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide g…

In vitro polyphenolics erythrocyte model and in vivo chicken embryo model revealed gallic acid to be a potential hemorrhage inducer: physicochemical action mechanisms.

The in vivo chicken embryo model (CEM) demonstrated that gallic acid (GA) induced dysvascularization and hypoxia. Inflammatory edema, Zenker's necrosis, hemolysis, and liposis of cervical muscles were the common symptoms. Levels of the gene hif-1α, HIF-1α, TNF-α, IL-6, and NFκB in cervical muscles were all significantly upregulated, while the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was downregulated in a dose-responsive manner. Consequently, the cervical muscle inflammation and hemolysis could have been stimulated en route to the tissue TNF-α-canonical and the atypical pathways. We hypothesi…

Anti-leukemic effects of gallic acid on human leukemia K562 cells: downregulation of COX-2, inhibition of BCR/ABL kinase and NF-κB inactivation.

Gallic acid (GA) induces apoptosis in various cancer cell lines. In this study, we investigated the apoptotic activity induced by GA on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell line-K562 and the underlying mechanism. GA reduced the viability of K562 cells in a dose and time dependent manner. GA led to G0/G1 phase arrest in K562 cells by promoting p21 and p27 and inhibiting the levels of cyclin D and cyclin E. Further studies indicated apoptosis with impaired mitochondrial function as a result of deranged Bcl-2/Bax ratio, leakage of cytochrome c and PARP cleavage along with DNA fragmentation and by …
