Distribution patterns and ecological risks of antibiotic resistance genes in the Yap Trench.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a global environmental concern, yet their vertical distribution in pristine marine ecosystems remains poorly understood. This study investigated the distribution of ARG distribution in both the water column and sediments of the Yap Trench, which reaches depths over 6500 m Results revealed significant variations in ARG diversity and abundance across depths and habitats. The deep-water (DW) zones exhibited the highest diversity (291-472 subtypes) and abundance (1.79 copies/cell), followed by upper-water (UW) zones (240-314 subtypes, 0.31 copies/cell), while

First report of biological contaminants in household water in the Philippines and long-term viability of Acanthamoeba species in one-year-old household water sediment.

This study aimed to detect biological contaminants, specifically Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Giardia, and FLAs, in Metro Manila, Philippines' household water samples. Eighty household water samples comprising 40 unfiltered water/water filter scrapings (F0) and 40 filtered water samples (F1) were filtered through a 1.2 μm-pore glass microfiber filter. F0 samples demonstrated Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Giardia spp. (oo)cysts through Modified Kinyoun's staining. Non-nutrient agar culture and DNA sequencing identified Acanthamoeba genotype T4, Acanthamoeba polyphaga, and Vermamoeba vermifor

Microbial Community Structure in Contrasting Hawaiian Coastal Sediments.

Microbe-mineral interactions play a fundamental role in marine sediments and global biogeochemical cycles. Here, we investigated the sediment microbial communities in two contrasting field sites on Big Island, Hawaii (USA), that differ in their bay morphology and sediment grain size distributions: Papakōlea Beach (exposed, finer sediment) and Richardson Ocean Park (sheltered, coarser sediment). We selected three stations within each bay and characterized the mineral and chemical composition of the sediment and porewater, and used 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of the V4V5 hypervariable region to

Cd migration in water-level fluctuation zones of Three Gorges reservoir: Interactions of periphytic biofilms and tryptophan.

Periphytic biofilms (PBs) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) are key factors affecting the migration of Cd at the "water-sediment" interface. However, the specific effects of PBs and protein-like components of DOM on Cd migration within the "water-biofilm-sediment" system remain poorly understood. This study simulates the dissolution and re-immobilization of Cd at the "water-biofilm-sediment" interface in the water-level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), aiming to clarify the role of PBs in Cd stability. The results indicate that the concentration of dissolved Cd inc

Isotopic Exchange between Aqueous Fe(II) and Solid Fe(III) in Lake Sediment─A Kinetic Assemblage Approach.

The catalytic effect of aqueous Fe(II) (Fe2+aq) on the transformation of Fe(oxyhydr)oxides has been extensively studied in the laboratory. It involves the transfer of electrons between Fe2+aq and Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides, rapid atomic exchange of Fe between the two states, and recrystallization of the Fe-oxides into more stable Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides. The potential occurrence of these reactions in natural soils and sediments can have an important impact on biogeochemical cycling of iron, carbon, and phosphorus. We investigated the possible isotopic exchange between Fe2+aq and sedimentary Fe(III) in Fe-S

Microplastics in Bays along the Central Texas Coast.

Estuarine and bay environments, which can act as sediment traps along the inner parts of continental shelves, may host significant depositional hotspots for plastic debris. This research targets Texas coastal bays (Matagorda and San Antonio), to better understand microplastic contamination in sediments and provide insight into the processes controlling its distribution. Microplastic extraction and quantification methods employed include sediment sieving, elutriation, microscopy, and spectroscopy. This study found low concentrations (ca. 10s-100s particles kilogram-1 sediment or 20-200 × 104 it

Biodegradation of triphenyl phosphate by a novel marine bacterial strain: Performance, mechanism, bioremediation and toxicity alleviation.

Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), a widely used organo-phosphorus flame retardant, poses environmental risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation. In this study, Stutzerimonas frequens RL-XB02, a novel TPHP-degrading strain, was isolated from mangrove sediments. Strain RL-XB02 could completely degrade 50 mg/L of TPHP in 24 hours under various conditions (pH 6.0-9.0, 30-40°C and salinity 2.0-4.0 % (NaCl, w/v)) and the optimal conditions for biodegradation were characterized as pH 7.0, 30°C and salinity 3.0 %. TPHP degradation and growth of RL-XB02 aligned with first-order decay (R2=0.998) and S

What is the influence of centennial evolution from macrophytes to algae on organic matter burial in the upper reaches of Yangtze River from the biomarker carbon isotope fingerprint.

Identification and quantification of sediment organic matter (OM) in the plateau eutrophic lakes, which are strongly influenced by human activities, is noticeable in the study of regional carbon (C) burial and global change. The abundance of n-alkanes and compound-specific carbon isotope (δ13Cn-alk) in sediment cores have been widely utilized as proxies. Here, the n-alkane diagnostic pattern, δ13Cn-alk end-member model, ecological data, and the historical OM input, associated with the ecosystem evolutionary processes were investigated. The results show the long-term ecological evolution under

Multi-scale response of mercury and methylmercury to submerged plant decline in a plateau wetland.

Submerged plant decline (SPD) can profoundly-but still incompletely understood-alter mercury (Hg) cycling, especially its methylation, in grass-dominated wetlands. To close this knowledge gap, we tracked the short-term and inter-annual responses of Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) to an unexpected SPD event in a plateau wetland. Immediately after SPD (2022-2023), dissolved MeHg (DMeHg) in pore water peaked in August, whereas dissolved Hg (DHg) in interface water peaked in May, revealing a temporal decoupling pattern. Spatially, seasonally inundated sediment had significantly higher DHg and DMeHg co

Historical record of trace elements since MIS 2 in a sediment core of Laizhou Bay, China.

The concentration of trace elements in sediments is a critical element in the quality of nearshore environments. Geochemical background values are the normal concentrations of trace elements in the natural environment, and the use of different background values has resulted in different evaluations. Trace element (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg) concentration profiles along a sediment core were investigated to obtain background values and to assess the depositional processes and contamination levels in Laizhou Bay. The average values of trace elements in the sediments formed during the Middle

Genome of the enigmatic watering-pot shell and morphological adaptations for anchoring in sediment.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we present the first chromosome-scale genome of Verpa penis (Linnaeus, 1758), and the first for the bivalve clade Anomalodesmata. The present study has two separate foci. Primarily, we provide the genetic resource to bridge further studies from genome to phenome and propose hypotheses to guide future empirical investigations. Secondarily, based on morphology, we outline a conceptual exploration to address their adaptation. Watering-pot shells have been called "the weirdest bivalves" for their fused tubular shell resembling the spout of a watering can. This adventitio

Repeated pulses of volcanism drove the end-Permian terrestrial crisis in northwest China.

The Permo-Triassic mass extinction was linked to catastrophic environmental changes and large igneous province (LIP) volcanism. In addition to the widespread marine losses, the Permo-Triassic event was the most severe terrestrial ecological crisis in Earth's history and the only known mass extinction among insects, but the cause of extinction on land remains unclear. In this study, high-resolution Hg concentration records and multiple-archive S-isotope analyses of sediments from the Junggar Basin (China) provide evidence of repeated pulses of volcanic-S (acid rain) and increased Hg loading cul

Monitoring the impacts of rainfall characteristics on sediment loss from road construction sites.

Exposed soils associated with active construction sites provide opportunities for erosion and sediment transport during storm events, introducing risks associated with excess sediment to downstream infrastructure and aquatic biota. A better understanding of the drivers of sediment transport in construction site runoff is needed to improve the design and performance of erosion and sediment control measures (ESCMs). Eleven monitoring locations on 3 active road construction sites in central Ohio were established to characterize runoff quality from points of concentrated flow during storm events.

A model-based analysis for trapping suspended sediment in stormwater inlets of urban drainage network.

Raised awareness of environmental constraints in recent decades has led stormwater management to incorporate quality components and focus on the treatment of urban runoff water at pollutant source areas. This study evaluated the impact of a developed type of sediment trap, installed into stormwater inlets, on the total suspended solids (TSS) load in an urban city center catchment in Finland. The objective was to outline a modelling approach to assess efficiency of the traps to treat TSS originating from different land uses (green areas, pavement, parking, roof, street, and other areas not belo

Impact of sediment mobilization on trace elements release in Galician Rías (NW Iberian Peninsula): insights into aquaculture.

In the latest years, the concentration levels of certain metals and metalloids in the sediments of the Galician Rías have shown an increasing trend (e.g., As, Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg). These areas are also characterized by their richness in nutrients and their great aquaculture or mariculture activity, with the presence of more than 3500 mussel rafts in the Rías Baixas. The inner areas of the Galician Rías are subjected to activities that resuspend the sediment such as high levels of maritime traffic and dredging or cleaning operations. It is likely that a transfer of these elements to the water column

Adsorption, natural attenuation, and microbial community response of ofloxacin and oxolinic acid in marine sediments.

The pollution of quinolone antibiotics in the marine environment has attracted widespread attention, especially for ofloxacin (OFL) and oxolinic acid (OXO) due to their frequent detection. However, few studies have been conducted to assess the behaviors and microbial community response to these antibiotics in marine sediments, particularly for potential antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this work, the adsorption characteristics, natural attenuation characteristics, and variation of microbial communities of OFL and OXO in marine sediments were investigated. The adsorption process of antibiotics

Iron Oxides Fuel Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane in the Presence of Sulfate in Hypersaline Coastal Wetland Sediment.

Wetland methane emissions are the primary natural contributor to the global methane budget, accounting for approximately one-third of total emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) serves as the major sink of methane in anoxic wetland sediments, where electron acceptors are present, thereby effectively mitigating its emissions. Nevertheless, environmental controls on electron acceptors, in particular, the ubiquitous iron oxides, involved in AOM are poorly understood. Here, we explored methane sinks within a hypersaline pool situated in a coastal we

Two-year assessment of the effects of controlled sediment flushing on stream habitats and biota at reach scale.

Controlled sediment flushing operations (CSFOs) allow to recover reservoirs storage loss while rebalancing the sediment flux interrupted by dams but, at the same time, may cause unacceptable ecological impact. In this study, we investigated the responses of the food web of an upland stream to a CSFO, focusing on the effects of fine sediment deposition detected in three different mesohabitats, i.e., a pool, a riffle, and a step-pool. The field campaign lasted two years and included repeated measurements of fine sediment deposits, and sampling of periphyton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fishes

In Situ Vivianite Formation in Intertidal Sediments: Ferrihydrite-Adsorbed P Triggers Vivianite Formation.

Coastal sediments are a key contributor to oceanic phosphorus (P) removal, impacting P bioavailability and primary productivity. Vivianite, an Fe(II)-phosphate mineral, can be a major P sink in nonsulfidic, reducing coastal sediments. Despite its importance, vivianite formation processes in sediments remain poorly understood. Here, we applied a novel approach to detect and quantify in situ vivianite formation in three intertidal flats. We conducted 7-week long incubations of mesh-bags filled with sediments mixed with (1) 57Fe-ferrihydrite, (2) 57Fe-ferrihydrite with adsorbed phosphate, and (3)
