Marfan syndrome: a review of the literature and case report.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a connective tissue disorder of variable inheritance that affects multiple organ systems. Cardiovascular, ocular, and skeletal abnormalities are cardinal features of the syndrome. Orofacially, MFS patients typically exhibit skeletal class II malocclusion, dolichofacial growth pattern, mandibular retrognathia, malar hypoplasia, high arched palate, dental crowding, and root anomalies. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the literature, as well as describe an 11-year-old female with MFS diagnosed at the age of 10.5 years. This report emphasizes the orofaci

Oral findings and dental treatment in a patient with Dandy-Walker syndrome: a case report.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is congenital disease characterized by hypoplasia of the cerebellum, the formation of cysts that communicate with the fourth ventricle of the posterior cranial fossa, and hydrocephalus. In addition to various other complications, cleft lip/palate, facial retrognathia, a high-arched palate, and maldentition occur at an increased frequency in patients with DWS. However, few studies have reported the dental manifestations of DWS. Herein, we report the clinical manifestations, oral findings, and dental management of a DWS patient who was treated under general anesthesia

Oral myiasis: a case report.

Myiasis is a condition caused by the invasion of tissues by larvae of Diptera flies. This phenomenon is well documented in the skin especially among animals and people in tropical and subtropical areas. The condition causes extensive tissue destruction as the larvae, at least for a certain period, feed on the host's dead or living tissue, liquid body substances, or ingested food. Mouth breathing during sleep, poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, mental disability, cerebral palsy, and hemiplegia may facilitate the development of myiasis. We present a case report of oral myiasis in a 22-year

Adjunctive use of tetracycline fibers with nonsurgical periodontal therapy in an adult with Down syndrome: a case report.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are susceptible to severe periodontal disease, due to immune alterations related to functional defects of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes. The adjunctive use of locally delivered antimicrobials has been proven to be beneficial, especially in areas where mechanical therapy might fail. This article describes the management of a patient with DS who had aggressive periodontitis. The treatment used a local drug delivery system with tetracycline fibers as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

The effects of professional oral health care on patients in the subacute stage of emergent neurosurgical disorders.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of professional oral health care (POHC) on patients who were in the subacute stage of neurosurgical disorders. Forty subjects (26 male, 14 female) with acute cerebrovascular disorders or neurotrauma were randomly divided into two groups. The intervention group (n = 21) received POHC treatment by dental hygienists, and the control group (n = 19) did not. To evaluate the change in oral health status of the subjects, an oral examination was carried out at baseline and four weeks later. For the subjects in the intervention group, periodontal condition, oral h

Dental findings and special care in patients with Angelman syndrome: a report of three cases.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic disorder, characterized by intellectual disability, movement or balance disorders, specific abnormal behaviors, and severe speech and language limitations. Due to its low incidence and the nonspecifity of developmental problems in newborns and young children, AS is not easily identified by clinical pediatricians. The aim of this paper is to present three cases of AS, reporting the orofacial characteristics and requisite dental care in these patients. Interestingly, this investigation found that certain typical features of mouth breathing syndrome, such

A review of the oro-dento-facial characteristics of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III (familial dysautonomia).

The oro-dento-facial features and dysfunction of children with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III, known as familial dysautonomia or Riley-Day syndrome, was first described in the scientific literature in 1949. They include dental trauma; dental and soft tissue self-mutilation; normal dental age; normal sequence and timing of eruption and exfoliation of teeth; smaller tooth size; different and disproportional tooth components; normal alveolar bone height; small jaws, mild crowding, and malocclusions. These persons have craniofacial morphology that is different from accepted n

Medical-dental findings and management of a child with infantile Refsum disease: a case report.

Infantile Refsum disease (IRD) is a peroxisome biogenesis disorder (PBD), and is part of a larger group of diseases called leukodystrophies, which are inherited conditions that damage the white matter of the brain and affect motor movements. Multiple signs and symptoms of IRD begin in infancy and progress through early childhood, including hearing and visual impairment, intellectual and growth impairment, seizures, liver involvement, and orofacial and dental abnormalities. This paper presents a case history of a 12-year-old female patient with IRD who underwent dental rehabilitation in the ope

Caries and periodontal disease in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has been associated with aging, reduced fine motor skills, and malnutrition caused by eating soft sticky foods and a decreased liquid intake, which may contribute to the onset of caries, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. The objective of this study was to investigate the oral health of 101 patients with PD (mean age: 66.2 ± 10.5 years) and compare them to 75 control subjects (CO) (mean age 71 ± 10.53). Patients with PD had poorer oral health than the control group (papilla bleeding index: PD 6.97 ± 8.34; CO 2.12 ± 2.73). Lower frequencies of daily toothbrushing (PD:

Oral care and sensory sensitivities in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at high risk for oral disease. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of sensory processing problems to challenges in receiving oral care for children with ASD. A questionnaire was sent to the parents of 206 children with disabilities to test the hypotheses that children with ASD, relative to children with other disabilities, experience greater difficulty with home-based and professional oral care, and that these difficulties may relate in part to sensory processing problems. The results partially supported these hypotheses. Comp

Accidental aspiration in a patient with Parkinson's disease during implant-supported prosthesis construction: a case report.

This article reports on a case history of an elderly patient with Parkinson's disease (PD) who sought treatment at a private dental office. His chief complaint was "difficulty in eating due to an illfitting prosthesis." Laboratory tests and oral radiographs were made. The surgical placement of an implant was done and, subsequently, an implant-supported prosthesis was fitted for the patient. During the impression for the construction of the implant-supported prosthesis, the patient accidentally aspirated the implant screwdriver. The object was found in the lower right lobe of the bronchus, and

Improvement of mouth opening for a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a case report.

The aim of this article is to describe the care of a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) and to provide dentists with a guide for how to safely care for patients with FOP. Treatment improved the patient's limited mouth opening. FOP is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital malformation of the fingers and toes by heterotopic ossification progressiva of the connective tissue. This ossification causes a limitation in osteoradicular mobility, mainly affecting the spine, shoulders, hips, and peripheral joints. The disease can manifest from pregnancy unti

Factors that limit access to dental care for adults with spinal cord injury.

This study investigated dental care service utilization among adults with spinal cord injury (SCI) and identified barriers and other factors affecting utilization among this population. There were 192 subjects with SCI who participated in the oral health survey assessing dental care service utilization and they were compared with subjects from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS). There was no significant difference in the proportion of subjects with SCI who visited the dentist for any reason in the past year compared to the general population (65.5% vs. 68.8%, p= .350)
