Management of erythema multiforme associated with recurrent herpes infection: a case report.

Erythema multiforme is an acute mucocutaneous disorder, characterized by varying degrees of blistering and ulceration. We report a case of recurrent herpes-associated erythema multiforme managed with prophylactic acyclovir. An 11-year-old boy had lesions in the oral cavity and lips, which had been diagnosed as erythema multiforme minor. Four months later, the patient had desquamative gingivitis with erythematous lesions and necrotic areas in the skin. This episode was not related to drug intake, which suggests that the erythema multiforme was a result of herpetic infection. This hypothesis was

Invasive Aspergillus stomatitis in patients with acute leukemia: report of 12 cases.

An 8-year retrospective analysis of invasive Aspergillus stomatitis in neutropenic patients with acute leukemia was performed to characterize the epidemiology and clinical features of the infection. Twelve cases of invasive Aspergillus stomatitis were identified with both clinicohistological and microbiological evidence, and the majority of cases were caused by Aspergillus flavus (10 [83%] of 12 patients). The infection was strongly suspected when a neutropenic patient developed persistent fever without a known source, symptoms of gingival pain and facial swelling, and a solitary ulcerating le

Noma: a forgotten disease.

According to recent reports from the WHO, noma (or cancrum oris), a hideous, ancient disease primarily affecting children living in poverty in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, is increasing. Noma often starts as an ulcer on the oral mucosa or as ANG and commonly after a bout of measles or other disease. It quickly develops into a massive necrosis, moving from the inside outward, often involving major portions of the face. Early treatment with antibiotics, rehydration, correction of electrolytic imbalances, and administering nutritional supplements will halt the disease. The high mortality rate, ho

Ulcerative diseases of animals with an infectious etiology.

The oral lesions of five viral diseases of cattle are compared. Two of the diseases, foot-and-mouth disease and vesicular stomatitis, cause vesicles, and rinderpest, bovine virus diarrhea and malignant catarrhal fever produce sharply demarcated erosive lesions. Gross lesions of different diseases appear similar: however, histologically, there are subtle differences in the development of the lesions.

[Clinical symptoms of precancerosis].

Clinically, praecancerosis of the oral mucosa may be classified into the following groups: Whitish, flat changes, reddish changes, papillary changes and ulcers. Combination of the various groups and flowing transition between them is often observed. It can be shown that praecancerosis can be neither clearly distinguished from benign tumors or changes, nor can it be differentiated from already existing malignomas. The same picture of a disease can occur in various clinical aspects. On the other hand, histologically very different changes may often hardly be distinguished clinically. A change in

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Certain mucocutaneous diseases present with painful, ulcerative, or erosive oral manifestations. Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is a newly recognized disease of unknown origin which presents clinically with features of desquamative gingivitis. This report marks only the thirteenth case reported in the world literature. A review of previous reports and studies is presented along with a review of immunofluorescence techniques critical to proper diagnosis. These diseases are difficult to diagnose without the use of immunofluorescence techniques. A 54-year-old Caucasian woman presented

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: a distinct clinical entity?

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a mucocutaneous disorder which is characterised by persistent oral mucosal ulceration. The clinical appearance is often reminiscent of oral lichen planus (OLP) leading to erroneous diagnoses. The immune mediated inhibition of the CUS protein (CUSP) is implicated in the pathogenesis of CUS. CUSP acts as an anti-apoptotic protein and when its action is prevented it may result in significant epithelial injury. The objective or this article is to present the first documented case of CUS in South Africa, with relevant reference to current international literat

Evaluation of dental students' knowledge and patient care towards HIV/AIDS individuals.

PURPOSE: The aim was to evaluate the knowledge of the students of dental students regarding patients care towards HIV positive individuals. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty-three dental students (pre-clinical, n = 45; clinical, n = 238) answered an electronic questionnaire, approaching biosafety procedures, oral manifestations of AIDS and knowledge of HIV infection. Data were present as an average from findings from students of nine different semesters, grouping them by pre-clinical (1-4) and clinical (5-9) semesters, from two different university campuses. Furthermore, data were analysed usin

Surgical considerations and management of patients with mucocutaneous disorders.

Surgeons may be confronted with providing periodontal plastic or implant therapy for patients with gingival manifestations of systemic conditions. These conditions (often referred to as mucocutaneous disorders) commonly present with features of desquamative gingivitis, which was once believed to represent a disease entity. However, today, the term desquamative gingivitis is used to describe clinical features of various local or systemic diseases or disorders that result in chronic gingival lesions characterized by epithelial desquamation, erythema, ulceration, and/or vesiculobullous lesions of

Differential diagnosis in clinical trials of therapy for periodontitis.

For purposes of clinical trials of therapies for periodontitis, it is recommended that population samples be identified as adult periodontitis (systemically modified or not systemically modified), early onset periodontitis (localized or juvenile, generalized or rapidly progressive, or associated with systemic disease), or necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, avoiding overlapping criteria. Population samples of adult or early onset periodontitis modified by or associated with systemic conditions should be used in clinical trials only when the intent is to study effect on the specifically modif

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: A comprehensive review and proposal for diagnostic criteria.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by oral erosions and ulcers usually refractory to conventional treatments. The disease often involves middle-aged and older women with painful lesions sometimes resembling those of erosive oral lichen planus (OLP). The most affected sites are the buccal mucosa, the gingiva and the tongue, but the skin is involved in 22.5% of cases. Histopathologic features in CUS are non-specific and indistinguishable from those of OLP, with the exception of the presence of a mixed infiltrate composed of lymphocytes and plasma cel

Noma (cancrum oris) in the South African context.

Noma (cancrum oris) is a destructive necrotising disease affecting orofacial tissues predominantly of malnourished young children. It is characterised by a rapid acute onset which usually starts in the mouth, spreads intra-orally destroying soft tissue and bone and progresses to perforate the facial skin, causing disfigurement. Polybacterial anaerobic infection is critical too, but is not alone sufficient for the initiation of noma. Cofactors, first and foremost malnutrition, but also systemic viral and bacterial infections are crucial to the development of noma. A patient with necrotising sto

Necrotizing gingivitis: a possible oral manifestation of ticlopidine-induced agranulocytosis.

Agranulocytosis is a rare complication of ticlopidine and can be life-threatening. We report a case of ticlopidine-induced agranulocytosis and neutropenia (neutrophil count of 0.1 x 10(9)/L) with necrotizing gingivitis in a 54-year-old Malaysian-Chinese female. She was started on ticlopidine 250 mg twice daily 3 weeks prior to this hospital admission. We started her on intravenous metronidazole and amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (Augmentin) and concurrently stopped ticlopidine. A series of clinical and laboratory investigations were carried out and a final diagnosis of necrotizing gingivitis

Necrotizing gingivitis of Kaposi sarcoma affected gingivae.

Necrotizing gingivitis and oral Kaposi sarcoma are common concomitants of HIV infection and both are regarded as indicators of HIV infection. Their simultaneous appearance in an HIV seropositive subject therefore, should be relatively common; but other reports documenting such cases could not be found. This article documents an uncommon case of necrotizing gingivitis superimposed on Kaposi sarcoma-affected gingiva, occurring in a patient with chronic periodontitis. The nature of necrotizing gingivitis and Kaposi sarcoma and the possible differential diagnosis of the periodontal attachment loss

Oral manifestations during chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a case report.

A 14-year-old, male patient was referred for the treatment of mucositis, idiopathic facial asymmetry, and candidiasis. The patient had been undergoing chemotherapy for 5 years for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He presented with a swollen face, fever, and generalized symptomatology in the mouth with burning. On physical examination, general signs of poor health, paleness, malnutrition, and jaundice were observed. The extraoral clinical examination showed edema on the right side of the face and cutaneous erythema. On intraoral clinical examination, generalized ulcers with extensive necrosis on t
