The high resolution frequency analyzer is used for the study of the vocal quality after partial laryngectomy. The post-operative plot after speech therapy is of good quality when respecting one vocal fold. On the contrary, the heard vocal sound does not correspond to the harmonics of the fundamental frequency but to intense noise from irregular vibrations of the residual laryngeal mucosa (ventricular folds, arytenoids). High resolution frequency analysis contributes to the follow-up of the partial laryngectomy.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common cancer of the oral cavity, particularly of the tongue. Surgery is the treatment of choice, but it can have a dramatic impact on patients' quality of life. Although the primary goal of tongue reconstruction is the restoration of vital functions such as swallowing and speech, a good cosmetic result should also be achieved. Herein we present the case of a 54-year-old woman who underwent total glossectomy, describing and highlighting the advantages of our modified technique: the "Ghost-shaped" anterolateral thigh perforator flap.

Pseudoaneurysm at the anastomosis of the free flap following ablative head and neck surgery is uncommon. We present a case of external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm in a patient who had previously undergone a subtotal glossectomy, neck dissection, and radial forearm free flap reconstruction. The traditional treatment for pseudoaneurysm has been open surgical repair. Our patient underwent successful treatment with an endovascular embolization utilizing thrombin injection of the aneurysmal sac. This case highlights the role of interventional radiology in the management of this rare but important…

BACKGROUND: The anterior tongue is crucial in speech articulation; however, the functional implications of tongue tip resection and reconstruction following glossectomy remain inadequately elucidated. This multicentric study aimed to evaluate the impact of lingual tip reconstruction on postoperative articulatory performance and self-perceived speech outcomes in patients undergoing major tongue resections for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 57 patients who underwent hemiglossectomy or extended glossectomy across four tertiary referral cen…

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of tongue cancer caused oral morbidities such as oral dryness, and dysphagia. The purpose of this study is to examine the time course of oral function and QOL based on resected area for patients after tongue cancer resection.
METHODS: 31 patients who underwent tongue cancer resection at the Showa University Head and Neck Oncology Center. The participants were divided into two groups; 24 participants in partial/hemi glossectomy group (PG), and seven in subtotal/total glossectomy group (TG). Participants were evaluated swallowing function (FOIS and MASA-C), tongue pressure …

BACKGROUND: Microvascular reconstruction is the standard of care in head and neck reconstruction, though its perioperative safety in an older population has been controversial due to safety concerns, warranting further investigation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An "older" (≥71 years) cohort undergoing reconstruction after mandibulectomy/glossectomy was compared to the remaining population in a National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (2008-2016) analysis. Cases required both a mandibulectomy/glossectomy and microvascular or local flap reconstruction (exclusion criteria: missing ages and simul…

Primary ectopic (extracranial) meningiomas (PEMs) are very rare and have been reported only sporadically. Histologically speaking, PEMs are similar to their intracranial counterparts in being composed of neoplastic arachnoidal (meningothelial) cells. In addition, several types of microscopic cellular morphologies have been observed in intracranial meningiomas: meningothelial (syncytial), psammomatous, atypical, anaplastic, fibrous, and angioblastic. To the best of the authors' knowledge, PEM presenting as a mass in the tongue has not been reported previously. This report describes a case of li

An improved simplified technique is described for reducing the volume of the tongue by operation. A plastic support has been designed on which the tongue can be spread out symmetrically and fixed in position. Gallbladder forceps are applied to the base of the tongue to avoid hemorrhage. An initial incision is made through the whole thickness of the tongue down to the support, and a partial resectomy performed, followed by apposition of the wound edges. The results obtained with this procedure are far superior to those previously reported using other techniques: the operation takes less time an

The focus of this article is the palliative treatment of a variety of dysphonic conditions. Symptomatic relief of hoarseness can be achieved by voice therapy, augmentative alternative communication modalities, and surgery. The causes of dysphonia addressed herein include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, head and neck cancers requiring glossectomy or laryngectomy, unilateral vocal fold paralysis, and presbyphonia. Palliative treatment of dysphonia and voice disorders provides symptomatic relief but not a cure of the underlying disease state. For th…

OBJECTIVES: Compartmental glossectomy has emerged as an oncologically sound approach for tongue carcinoma; however, it is often associated with the need for reconstruction due to the resulting floor-of-mouth defect. This prospective study focuses on reconstruction, including its surgical and functional outcomes for speech and swallowing, using the Infra Hyoid Myocutaneous Flap (IHMCF) after compartmental resection for tongue squamous cell carcinoma.
METHODS: A total of 36 patients with histologically proven squamous cell carcinoma of the lateralized tongue were enrolled during the study perio…

Myoclonic status epilepticus (MSE) within the first 24 hours after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) predicts poor prognosis, enough to discontinue the treatment. In contrast, chronic MSE appearing a few days after CPR is called Lance-Adams syndrome (LAS), which is characterized by preserved intellect and a favorable prognosis. We herein report a case of LAS, which developed after a transient hypoxic event without an overt cardiac arrest due to hematoma formation in the neck after partial glossectomy. Differential diagnosis was also challenging as LAS was developed 8 hours after the hypoxic …

Patients with severe alterations of the maxillary growth pattern, due to long term predominant oral respiration, primarily need orthopaedic appliances, rather than common orthodontic mechanics. In cases of maxillary transversal deficiency, rapid expansion is indicated to recover an adequate width. Such treatment improves the ability for nasal ventilation. When the maxilla is sagittally underdeveloped, a facial mask is used to protract the entire maxilla. Other ways of treatment include oral screens, partial glossectomy, myofunctional therapy and respiratory gymnastics. Finally orthodontic trea…

Variable degrees of macroglossia have been noted in patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Past studies have shown that a major effect of the macroglossia is protrusion of dentoalveolar structures, resulting in an anterior open bite and a prognathic mandibular appearance secondary to an abnormally obtuse gonial angle and increased effective mandibular length. In our series of 11 Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome patients we have observed that early correction of the macroglossia by means of partial glossectomy has resulted in decreased anterior open bite and mandibular prognathism as compared wi…

Surgery for invasive squamous cell carcinoma involving the tongue base usually necessitates a total glossectomy because complete tumour resection requires sacrifice of both lingual arteries leaving a non-viable anterior tongue. A case is presented in which both lingual arteries were sacrificed to achieve complete tumour excision and the remaining anterior two-thirds of the tongue were successfully revascularized by through-flow from a radial forearm free flap which was used for pharyngeal reconstruction. This technique offers hope of preservation of the tongue when radical surgery would otherw…
