Gold(i) complexes based on six-membered phosphorus heterocycles as bio-active molecules against brain cancer.

π-Systems based on six-membered phosphorus heterocycles possess structural and electronic characteristics that clearly distinguish them from the rest of the organophosphorus molecules. However, their use in cancer therapy has been uninvestigated. In particular, glioblastoma is one of the most lethal brain tumors. The development of novel and more efficient drugs for the treatment of glioblastoma is thus crucial to battle this aggressive disease. Herein, we report a new family of gold(i) complexes based on six-membered phosphorus heterocycles as a promising tool to investigate brain cancer. We

Dual-Mode Electrochemical Immunoassay for Insulin Based on Cu7S4-Au as a Double Signal Indicator.

The detection of insulin by electrochemical (EC) immunoassay is desirable but highly challenged due to the obstacle of improving its accuracy, especially in a single-response system. In this work, based on Cu7S4-Au as a dual signal indicator, we fabricated a dual-mode electrochemical immunoassay for insulin. Especially, Cu7S4 presents a strong differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) signal for the electron transfer between Cu2+ and Cu+, without the addition of K3[Fe(CN)6] or other electron transfer mediators. Furthermore, Cu7S4 displays high sensitivity and high electrocatalytic activity toward t

Optical monitoring of faradaic reaction using single plasmon-resonant nanorods functionalized with graphene.

Real-time optical monitoring of the electron-transfer process was achieved and modulated on individual gold nanoparticles functionalized with graphene. We found that charge accumulation on single gold nanorods (GNRs) depends on the rate of Faradaic reaction, which is synchronized with double-layer charging.

Evolution of conformational order during self-assembly of n-alkanethiols on Hg droplets: an infrared spectromicroscopy study.

This Letter describes Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy evidence for the evolution of conformational order and coverage during the formation of n-alkanethiol monolayers on microdroplets of mercury from the solution phase. At the highest coverages obtained by self-assembly, the monolayer is characterized by predominantly all-trans conformational order. For partial monolayers obtained at arbitrarily quenched incubation periods, we find a continuous evolution of the chain conformational order with monolayer coverage. Analyzing these results in light of previously reported models from X-ray

p-Aminophenylacetic acid-mediated synthesis of monodispersed titanium oxide hybrid microspheres in ethanol solution.

Monodispersed TiO2 hybrid microspheres were prepared via the hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) in ethanol solution containing p-aminophenylacetic acid (APA). The effects of the APA:TTIP molar ratio, water content, reaction time and reaction temperature on the morphology of the resultant spheres were investigated. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. It was demonstrated that the diameters of the resultant TiO2 spheres could be tuned i

Selective detection of endogenous thiols using microchip-based flow analysis and mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes.

This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of thin-layer mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes and their integration with microchip-based flow injection analysis. This microchip platform allows on-chip injection and lysis of erythrocytes followed by selective detection of intracellular glutathione (GSH) at low potentials. The thin-layer gold microelectrodes were amalgamated by electrodeposition of mercury. The electrodes produced a linear response for both GSH and cysteine in flow injection analysis studies utilizing both off-chip and on-chip injection. Comparative experiments us

Bioaccumulation of mercury in a vestimentiferan worm living in Kagoshima Bay, Japan.

The present study reports on the mercury concentrations of the vestimentiferan worm, Lamellibrachia satsuma, (Annelida: Pogonophora) found near hydrothermal vents at a depth of 80-100 m in the northern parts of Kagoshima Bay. The vestimentiferan worms had total mercury concentrations of 238 ng/g in the anterior muscle of the body and 164 ng/g in the posterior trophosome. Methylmercury constituted only 7.6% of total mercury detected anteriorly and 16.3% posteriorly. The mean total mercury concentration in filtrated ambient seawater of the worm habitat was 1.1 ng/l. The worm should accumulate me

Copper (I)-Chloroquine Complexes: Interactions with DNA and Ferriprotoporphyrin, Inhibition of β-Hematin Formation and Relation to Antimalarial Activity.

A new Cu(I)-chloroquine (CQ) complex [Cu(CQ)(PPh3)2]NO3 (1) was synthesized and characterized, and its mechanism of action studied concomitant with the previously reported complex [Cu(CQ)2]Cl (2). These copper (I) coordination compounds can be considered as potential antimalarial agents because they show better inhibition of the CQ-resistant strain in in vitro studies than CQ alone. In comparison with other metal-CQ complexes, only the gold complex was similar to (1), i.e., more active than CQ against both CQ-susceptible (3D7) and CQ-resistant strains (W2). These two copper (I)-compounds also

Mass-spectrometry assisted heavy-atom derivative screening of human Fc gamma RIII crystals.

A heavy-atom screening method aided by mass spectrometry is described here. Using mass spectrometry, several heavy-atom compounds have been screened in order to obtain potential phasing derivatives for the crystals of a human immunoglobulin Fc receptor, Fc gamma RIII. Of these, HgCl(2), trimethyllead acetate (TMLA), KAu(CN)(2), K(2)PtCl(4) and PbAc(2) reacted with Fc gamma RIII in solution, whereas KAuCl(4), ethylmercuric thiosalicylate (EMTS) and Na(2)WO(4) did not. To validate the mass-spectrometry results, these heavy-atom compounds were also used to soak crystals of Fc gamma RIII and cryst

Pesticide Identification Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations: From Structural Insights to On-Site Detection.

Pesticides play an important role in conventional agriculture. Yet, their harmful effects on the environment are becoming increasingly apparent. The occurrence of pesticides is hence being monitored worldwide. For fast, easy, yet sensitive identification, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful tool. In this study, a method is introduced that may be amended to in-field detection of pesticides. Gold and silver nanoparticles were synthesized, size-tailored, and characterized. The herbicide paraquat and the fungicide thiram served as model compounds. The preparation yielded repro

Sustainable gold leaching from refractory ores: MoS2-photocatalyzed leaching coupled with in situ utilization of mineral-sourced sulfur.

Gold (Au) has garnered significant attention due to its crucial applications in various fields, yet its green and sustainable recovery remains challenging. While cyanide has been the preferred leaching agent for over a century, its high toxicity and unsuitability for carbonaceous and high-copper ores limit its use. Thiosulfate shows potential for treating refractory gold ores, but its high consumption and low oxidation kinetics are obstacles. This study introduces a photocatalytic process that directly oxidizes gold by generating highly reactive free radicals via photocatalysis, while also oxi

Gold-based therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis: from conventional chrysotherapy to gold nanoclusters.

Gold-based therapeutics were among the earliest disease-modifying treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with Au(I)-containing compounds such as sodium aurothiomalate and auranofin demonstrating significant anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity. Despite their therapeutic efficacy, widespread clinical adoption was hindered by systemic toxicity, poor pharmacokinetics, and limited control over biodistribution. Recent advances in nanotechnology have renewed interest in gold-based therapeutics through the development of atomically precise gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Typically smaller th

Interface-Stabilized Logic Nanoprobe Enables High-Fidelity Orthogonal Sensing of MMP-1 and HNE in Thiol-Rich Biological Environments.

Reliable multiplexed sensing in thiol-rich biological environments remains challenging because nonspecific ligand displacement, background leakage, and partial channel corruption can compromise the analytical meaning of multichannel fluorescence outputs. Here, we report an interface-stabilized logic-gated fluorescent nanoprobe for high-fidelity orthogonal sensing of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and human neutrophil elastase (HNE). Two fluorogenic peptide substrates were co-immobilized on gold nanoparticles through an Au-C≡C nano-biointerface to generate independent FITC and 5-TAMRA fluor

Kinetically Arrested SERS-Active Aggregates for Biosensing.

There is great demand for biosensors capable of long-term, non-invasive monitoring of low analyte concentrations in various biofluids for diagnostics, personalized healthcare, and disease monitoring. However, biofluids present several challenges to biosensor sensing and stability on account of their complex composition and dynamic nature. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) offers ultra-high sensitivity, non-destructive, real-time monitoring, and non-invasive detection, ideal for sensing in complex media. Plasmonic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) SERS-active assemblies have been widely explore

Factors Influencing the Activity of Nanozymes in the Cleavage of an RNA Model Substrate.

A series of 2-nm gold nanoparticles passivated with different thiols all featuring at least one triazacyclonanone-Zn(II) complex and different flanking units (a second Zn(II) complex, a triethyleneoxymethyl derivative or a guanidinium of arginine of a peptide) were prepared and studied for their efficiency in the cleavage of the RNA-model substrate 2-hydroxypropyl-p-nitrophenyl phosphate. The source of catalysis for each of them was elucidated from the kinetic analysis (Michaelis-Menten profiles, pH dependence and kinetic isotope effect). The data indicated that two different mechanisms were o
