OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of risperidone on the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis of chronic schizophrenic male inpatients medicated regularly.
METHODS: Subjects included six inpatients who were diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition, criteria for schizophrenia, and were termed treatment-refractory. Each patient gave informed consent for the research involved in this study. The neuroendocrine studies were done before and during risperidone administration. Patients took a mean dose of risperidone 9.5 mg/d for a mean period of 64.2 days.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The ligament that lies in the inguinal hernia sac of girls is known to be the round ligament and is described as homologous to the male gubernaculum. An ovary in a hernia sac might be assumed to mimic descent of the testis. The aim of this study is to determine whether this ligament has a role in final ovarian position.
METHODS: Samples of peritoneal tissues containing the ligament were obtained from 15 female infants and children who underwent inguinal hernia repair. Tissue specimens were evaluated through histopathologic and immunohistological analyses.

In a 20-year-old patient with primary amenorrhoea with phenotypically female external reproductive organs, 46 XY genotype was found. Gynaecological examination, USG and CT showed small hypoplastic uterus and rudimentary ovaries. During the final stage of the diagnosis, laparoscopic assessment of the ovaries with their removal was performed. On histopathological examination gonadoblastoma was diagnosed.

The area of the granular tubules of the submaxillary gland was evaluated in male and female rats at 60 days of age. In males, this area was significantly greater than in females, corroborating the presence of sex dimorphism in this structure. Dimorphism disappeared after castration. Testosterone increased tubular area. Estrogen and progesterone as well as pregnancy reduced it. The tubular surface was significantly greater at term than at mid pregnancy.

We have attempted to document in cryptorchid children that there is an LH deficiency and a secondary deficiency of testosterone. We have shown a diminished LH peak after LH-RH in cryptorchid versus normal infants (P less than 0.05). The postnatal surge of testosterone is significantly low (P less than 0.001) in permanent cryptorchids versus infants with secondary testicular descent, whose levels are similar to those in controls.
