Cerebrospinal fluid flow imaging by using phase-contrast MR technique.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces include ventricles and cerebral and spinal subarachnoid spaces. CSF motion is a combined effect of CSF production rate and superimposed cardiac pulsations. Knowledge of CSF dynamics has benefited considerably from the development of phase-contrast (PC) MRI. There are several disorders such as communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, syringomyelic cyst and arachnoid cyst that can change the CSF dynamics. The aims of this pictorial review are to outline the PC MRI technique, CSF physiology and cerebrospinal space anatomy, to describ

Dynamic external fixation of unstable fractures of the distal part of the radius. A prospective, randomized comparison with static external fixation.

A prospective, randomized study was done to compare the results of dynamic external fixation (the Clyburn device) with those of static external fixation (the AO/ASIF device) in the treatment of fifty unstable fractures of the distal part of the radius. Mobilization of the wrist from neutral to 30 degrees of flexion was begun in the dynamic-fixator group at approximately two weeks, and full motion, allowing 30 degrees of extension, was started at approximately four weeks. The external fixation frames in both groups were kept in place for approximately ten weeks. Mobilization of the wrist in the

Automated phenotyping of postoperative delirium-like behaviour in mice reveals the therapeutic efficacy of dexmedetomidine.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a complicated and harmful clinical syndrome. Traditional behaviour analysis mostly focuses on static parameters. However, animal behaviour is a bottom-up and hierarchical organizational structure composed of time-varying posture dynamics. Spontaneous and task-driven behaviours are used to conduct comprehensive profiling of behavioural data of various aspects of model animals. A machine-learning based method is used to assess the effect of dexmedetomidine. Fourteen statistically different spontaneous behaviours are used to distinguish the non-POD group from the P

Reverse Dynamization Accelerates Bone-Healing in a Large-Animal Osteotomy Model.

BACKGROUND: Reverse dynamization is a mechanical manipulation regimen designed to accelerate bone-healing and remodeling. It is based on the hypothesis that a fracture that is initially stabilized less rigidly allows micromotion to encourage initial cartilaginous callus formation. Once substantial callus has formed, the stabilization should then be converted to a rigid configuration to prevent the disruption of neovascularization. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether bone-healing can be accelerated using a regimen of reverse dynamization in a large-animal osteotomy model. M

Response to Glucocorticosteroids Predicts Olfactory Outcome After ESS in Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Olfaction is frequently impaired in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and often improves after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Data about dynamics of olfactory changes after ESS are lacking, and little information is available concerning whether preoperatively administered glucocorticosteroids predict postoperative olfaction. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine dynamics of olfaction after ESS in relation to the effect of preoperative administration of glucocorticosteroids in CRSwNP. METHODS: This prospective study included 52 CRSwNP patients (30 men, 22

Global distribution of NA1 genotype of respiratory syncytial virus and its evolutionary dynamics assessed from the past 11 years.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a potent pathogen having global distribution. The main purpose of this study was to gain an insight into distribution pattern of the NA1 genotype of group A RSV across the globe together with its evolutionary dynamics. We focused on the second hypervariable region of the G protein gene and used the same for Phylogenetic, Bayesian and Network analyses. Eighteen percent of the samples collected from 500 symptomatic pediatric patients with acute respiratory tract infection (ARI) were found to be positive for RSV during 2011-15 from New Delhi, India. Of these,

Impact of dimerization and N3 binding on molecular dynamics of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 main proteases.

SARS-CoV-2 main protease is one of the major targets in drug development efforts against Covid-19. Even though several structures were reported to date, its dynamics is not understood well. In particular, impact of dimerization and ligand binding on the dynamics is an important issue to investigate. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 main proteases to investigate influence of dimerization on the dynamics by modeling monomeric and dimeric apo and holo forms. The dimerization causes an organization of the interdomain dynamics as well as some loc

Static and dynamic balance function in spasmodic torticollis.

The consequences of abnormal head posture on static and dynamic balance skill were studied in a group of 10 patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST). In static conditions, body sway was assessed using a conventional force platform with eyes open and with eyes closed. Standardized dynamic balance conditions were produced using a rocking platform; lateral and anteroposterior dynamic balance skills were assessed by measuring linear displacement both of the body base and of the head. Dynamic tests were repeated 6 weeks after botulinum toxin treatment in all patients. Patients' results w

Investigation of cathinone analogs targeting human dopamine transporter using molecular modeling.

In a step towards understanding the structure-property relationship among Synthetic Cathinones (SCs), a combined methodology based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), Administration, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity (ADMET) predictions, docking and molecular dynamics simulations have been applied to correlate physicochemical descriptors of various SCs to their biological activity. The results from DFT and molecular docking studies correlate well with each other explaining the biological activity trends of the studied SCs. Quantum mechanical descriptors viz. polarizability, ele

Who is getting better in treatment? Dynamics in risk processes as a signature of short-term suicide treatment response.

BACKGROUND: Although efficacious treatments that reduce suicide attempt risk have been developed, signatures that indicate that a patient's suicide risk may be stabilizing over the course of treatment for suicide are not well understood. This study examined whether dynamics in suicide risk and resilience processes over the course of treatment differentiated individuals who did versus did not attempt suicide while in treatment. METHOD: Participants were adults who completed up to 12 sessions of suicide-focused therapy as part of a randomized clinical trial. Weekly surveys assessed suicide risk

Improved analysis of heart rate variability by methods of nonlinear dynamics.

The traditional analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in the time and frequency domains seems to be an independent predictive marker for sudden cardiac death. Because the usual applied methods of HRV analysis describe only linear or strong periodic phenomena, the authors have developed new methods of HRV analysis based on nonlinear dynamics. In that way, parameters are extracted that quantify more complex processes and their complicated relationships. These methods are symbolic dynamics that describes the beat-to-beat dynamics and renormalized entropy that compares the complexity of power s

Peri-operative and Midterm Results of Supracoeliac versus Infracoeliac Sealing for Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Repair of Juxtarenal Aortic Aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate peri-operative and midterm outcomes, including sac dynamics, of fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (F-EVAR) for juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (JAAAs), comparing supracoeliac with infracoeliac sealing. Supracoeliac sealing may offer an advantage due to a longer proximal sealing zone, but is associated with a more complex procedure and increased risk of complications. Furthermore, it is unknown whether supracoeliac sealing actually leads to increased durability. METHODS: Patients undergoing elective F-EVAR for JAAAs from 2008 - 202
