The clinical features of severe falciparum malaria and risk factors for mortality were studied in 489 children admitted with malaria to Madang Hospital, Papua New Guinea. The most common severe manifestations of malaria were severe anaemia (22%) and coma (16%). Pancreata of guinea-pigs were investigated for the presence and cellular distribution of biogenic amines. Out of the established endocrine cell types only insulin (B-) cells contained immunoreactivity for serotonin and noradrenaline. However, the B-cells' content of both amines was quite variable. Thirty-two children with 33 episodes of infective endocarditis were admitted into the paediatric unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria during an 8-year period (January 1982-December 1989). Thirty (94%) had underlying heart disease. Rheumatic heart disease was the pre-existing anomaly in 21 (66%) while congenital cardiac anomalies were detected in nine (28%). The distribution of cytokeratin and vimentin in guinea pig tissues as seen by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies is described and a similar distribution pattern of coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin in various cell types as compared to human tissues were found. The possible explanations for the unusual coexpression of both types of intermediate filaments in normal cells are discussed.
