Prevalence of HTLV-1/2 infection in pregnant women in Central and South America and the Caribbean: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Human T-lymphotropic viruses (HTLV)-1 infection is endemic in many countries of Central and South America and Caribbean (CSA&C). Neither screening nor surveillance programs exist for HTLV-1/2 infection among pregnant women in this region. Neither in Western nations with large migrant flows from HTLV-1/2 endemic regions. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of HTLV-1/2 infection among CSA&C pregnant women. We included studies searching EMBASE, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to February 15, 2023. This systematic review followed Pr

Patterns of non-traumatic myelopathies in Yaounde (Cameroon): a hospital based study.

BACKGROUND: The relative frequency of compressive and non-compressive myelopathies and their aetiologies have not been evaluated extensively in most sub-Saharan African countries. The case of Cameroon is studied. METHODS: Admission registers and case records of patients in the neurology and neurosurgery departments of the study hospital were reviewed from January 1999 to December 2006. RESULTS: 224 (9.7% of all admissions) cases were non-traumatic paraplegia/paraparesis or tetraplegia/tetraparesis and 147 were due to myelopathies, representing 6.3% of all cases admitted during the study peri

Risk of human T-lymphotropic virus type I-associated diseases in Jamaica with common HLA types.

Human T-lymphotropic virus-I (HTLV-I) causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). We postulated a higher disease risk for people with common human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types, due to a narrower immune response against viral or neoplastic antigens, compared to people with uncommon types. HLA class-I (A,B) and class-II (DRB1, DQB1) allele and haplotype frequencies in 56 ATL patients, 59 HAM/TSP patients and 190 population-based, asymptomatic HTLV-I-infected carriers were compared by logistic regression overall (score test)

First description of HTLV-1/2 seroprevalence in HIV-infected inmates in Mozambique.

No study has yet been conducted to estimate the burden of co-infection of HIV and HTLV-1/2 in inmates in sub-Saharan Africa. To investigate prevalence of co-infection in inmates in Mozambique, a total of 2140 inmates were screened for HIV, of which 515 were HIV seropositive. All HIV seropositive inmates were further screened for HTLV infection, and eight (1.55%) were co-infected. Co-infection was higher in females (3.45% [2/58; CI: 0.42-11.91]) as compared to males (1.35% [6/445; CI: 0.55-3.06]). Early screening of HTLV in prisons is urgently needed in Mozambique in order to improve the care p

Work-Related Human T-lymphotropic Virus 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) Infection: A Systematic Review.

Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) belong to the delta group of retroviruses which may cause a life-long infection in humans, HTLV-1 leading to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and other diseases. Different transmission modes have been described, such as breastfeeding, and, as for other blood-borne pathogens, unsafe sexual activity, intravenous drug usage, and blood transfusion and transplantation. The present systematic review was conducted to identify all peer-reviewed studies concerning the work-related infection by HTLV-1/2. A literature search was conducted from January to May 20

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I or II (HTLV-I/II) associated with recurrent longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM): two case reports.

We describe two patients with recurrent longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) associated with human T-lymphotropic virus type I or II (HTLV-I/II) exposure, and with neuromyelitis optica (NMO) immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody in one case. HTLV-I/II are well known retroviral agents of myelopathy and B-cell dysfunction in humans. NMO is an autoimmune, demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), also linked to B-cell dysfunction. Therefore, the immunopathogenesis of NMO may in some cases be linked to human HTLV exposure. Awareness of a possible association with human r

[Seroprevalence of HTLV-1/2 in blood donors from Misiones Province].

Human T-cell Lymphotropic viruses type 1 (HTLV-1), the first human oncoretrovirus to be discovered, is the etiologic agent of Adult T-cell Leukemia (ATL) and HTLV-1 Associated Mielopathy or Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP). It is endemic worldwide, including the North of Argentina where both associated diseases have also been detected. No etiologic role has been described for HTLV-2, although it has been associated with HAM/TSP-like neurologic syndromes. Both retroviruses are endemic in native populations of The Americas, Africa and at-risk populations. They are transmitted through sex c

Presence of human T lymphotropic virus types I and II in Ghana, west Africa.

Until recently, HTLV-I was considered to be an Old World virus and HTLV-II was thought to be endemic in the Americas. However, the presence of HTLV-II among Pygmies and other populations of Africa has raised doubts as to whether HTLV-II is primarily a New World virus. The large serosurveys conducted in the urban and rural areas of southern Ghana have identified a 1-2% prevalence for HTLV-I/II. To define the HTLV type, we have used a Western blot assay (HTLV-2.3 blot) that allows simultaneous confirmation and differentiation between HTLVs. Samples (n = 139) were chosen on the basis of previous

Seroprevalence of transfusion-transmissible infectious diseases at a hemotherapy service located in southwest Bahia, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: The serological screening of blood donors has been instituted by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and is mandatory in the research on several diseases transmissible through blood transfusion. Blood banks need to establish a screening service capable of reducing associated transfusions risks. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to establish the prevalence of transfusion-transmissible infection markers in donors at a hemotherapy service located in southwest Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed between 2010 and 2016. Variables, such as the characteriz

HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) versus adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL).

OBJECTIVES: Human T cell leukemia virus-1 (HTLV-1) infection may lead to one or both diseases including HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) or adult T cell leukemia lymphoma (ATLL). The complete interactions of the virus with host cells in both diseases is yet to be determined. This study aims to construct an interaction network for distinct signaling pathways in these diseases based on finding differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between HAM/TSP and ATLL. RESULTS: We identified 57 hub genes with higher criteria scores in the primary protein-protein interactio

Molecular epidemiology of HTLV type I in Japan: evidence for two distinct ancestral lineages with a particular geographical distribution.

Japan is one of the highest endemic areas of the world for human T cell leukemia-lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I). To gain new insight as to the origin of this virus in Japan and especially in the southern islands of the archipelago, we investigated the long terminal repeat (LTR) of 67 newly isolated HTLV-I proviral DNAs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HTLV-I-infected individuals for their restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The specimens were from Japanese living in different geographical areas (Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, or the Ryukyu Islands) of Japan (59 cases) or Amer

Effects of hippuristanol, an inhibitor of eIF4A, on adult T-cell leukemia.

We evaluated the anti-adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) effects of hippuristanol, an eukaryotic translation initiation inhibitor from the coral Isis hippuris. Hippuristanol inhibited proliferation of HTLV-1-infected T-cell lines and ATL cells, but not normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells. It induced cell cycle arrest during G₁ phase by reducing the expression of cyclin D1, cyclin D2, CDK4 and CDK6, and induced apoptosis by reducing the expression of Bcl-x(L), c-IAP2, XIAP and c-FLIP. The induced apoptosis was associated with activation of caspase-3, -8 and -9. Hippuristanol also suppressed Ikap

[Prevalence of HIV-1 and other sexually transmitted diseases among Spanish prostitutes].

BACKGROUND: Many studies in Western countries point to the high prevalence of HIV infection in groups of prostitutes especially among those using intravenous drugs (IVDA). Furthermore, there appears to be a low but increasing number of heterosexually infected prostitutes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 374 prostitutes selected by collaborating groups in 11 provinces with the aim of studying the prevalence of HIV and its associated risk factors in Spanish prostitutes. Furthermore, the prevalence of other sexually transmitted diseases (HIV-2, HTLV-I/II, hepatiti

Neurological aspects of HIV/human T lymphotropic virus coinfection.

Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 is associated with some neurologic diseases, mainly human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Human T lymphotropic virus type 2 has also been associated with similar cases of human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, but evidences for a definitive relationship are less clear. On the other hand, neurologic manifestations of HIV infection are quite common, affecting more than one third of patients in HIV clinics. Seroepidemiologic studies show that HIV-infected individuals ar

Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 and Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 2 Mortality in the Shipibo-Konibo People.

High rates of human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and human T cell lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) infections have been reported among Andean and Amazonian Peruvian indigenous populations in Peru. The Shipibo-Konibo people are the third-largest Amazonian indigenous group living in Peru. By using data from two observational studies conducted in the Shipibo-Konibo community, we estimated that the risk of all-cause death at 12 years was 3.11 times higher (95% CI: 1.58-6.10) for people with HTLV-1 infection compared with those with HTLV-2 infection or without HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infec
