Designing an Interoperable Intelligent Agent for the Blood Transfusion Chain in Geneva, Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: Blood supply chain management is a cornerstone of modern medicine, yet it faces persistent structural challenges, including unpredictable supply and demand, perishability, and fragmentation of information systems. These limitations can hinder real-time inventory visibility and complicate extended blood compatibility searches, particularly for poly-transfused patients at risk of alloimmunization. METHODS: We designed a proof-of-concept combining (1) an interoperable health data exchange pipeline based on HL7 FHIR, SNOMED-CT, and LOINC standards, and (2) an intelligent matching ag

Rejection of an innovation: health information management training materials in east Africa.

A shift towards decentralization in many low-income countries has meant more skills are demanded of primary health care managers, including data and information handling at all levels of the health care system. Ministries of Health are changing their central reporting health information systems to health management information systems with emphasis on managers utilizing information at the point of collection. This paper reports on a research study to investigate the introduction of new information management strategies intended to promote an informational approach to management at the operatio

Factors influencing the spatial distribution of cystic echinococcosis in Tibet, China.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), which is caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a worldwide helminthozoonosis that is highly endemic in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and has important public health and economic impacts. However, the spatial epidemiological characteristics of CE in Tibet are still unclear. Based on recorded human CE cases and the use of a geographic information system, the spatial distribution patterns of CE prevalence at three different scales were analyzed. In addition, a spatial agglomeration map of CE prevalence was generated based on cold/hot spot analysis. By combining

[Structure of communication between physicians and patients from the viewpoint of community health].

Understanding the structure and problems of communication between physicians and patients should be achieved before introducing a medical information network system for community health. To this end a questionnaire survey was performed on 2,362 patients who saw physicians in medical facilities in a certain district of Hiroshima city. As a result, it was revealed that 'explanations given by doctors' and 'explanatory ability of patients' were mutually closely related and formed a basis for other aspects of communication and patient behavior. Satisfaction with the explanation given by physicians

SensorW: Open-Source Wear Operating System Platform for Continuous Global Positioning System and Multimodal Sensor Data Collection in Real-World Settings.

Digital phenotyping requires continuous, real-world collection of multimodal behavioral and physiological data. Although several smartphone-based sensing frameworks have been developed and used, open-source platforms for long-term smartwatch sensor data acquisition remain limited. To bridge this gap, SensorW was developed, an open-source Wear operating system (OS)-based framework for direct lifelog data collection from smartwatches without requiring a paired smartphone or manufacturer cloud service. SensorW includes a front-end Wear OS application for sensor data collection and a back-end serv

Objective quality assessment of neuroradiology reports using large language models.

AIM: Radiology reports are essential for clinical decision-making and must meet standards of clarity, completeness, and diagnostic accuracy. However, quality assessment is often subjective, time-consuming, and dependent on expert reviewers. Large language models (LLMs) offer a promising alternative for automating this process. This study evaluates whether LLMs can objectively and consistently assess the formal and diagnostic quality of neuroradiology reports. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed 277 neuroradiology reports, originally authored by 10 radiologists and subsequently evaluated by a d

An interactive mapping tool to assess individual mobility patterns in neighborhood studies.

As their most critical limitation, neighborhood and health studies published to date have not taken into account nonresidential activity places where individuals travel in their daily lives. However, identifying low-mobility populations residing in low-resource environments, assessing cumulative environmental exposures over multiple activity places, and identifying specific activity locations for targeting interventions are important for health promotion. Daily mobility has not been given due consideration in part because of a lack of tools to collect locational information on activity spaces.

Towards an atlas of human helminth infection in sub-Saharan Africa: the use of geographical information systems (GIS).

The value of a geographical perspective to infectious disease epidemiology and control has long been recognized. However, the labour required to produce maps, and keep them up to date, has inhibited the development of this area, and very little is currently known about the spatial distribution of parasitic infections other than malaria, trypanosomiasis and onchocerciasis. A recent initiative by an international group of collaborators is attempting to redress the absence of detailed spatial information on the major helminth infections of humans. In this article, Simon Brooker and colleagues des

[Artificial intelligence and healthcare: why is it difficult to move from the research phase to clinical practice?].

Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as one of the most promising innovations in healthcare, yet its adoption in routine clinical practice remains limited. Only a small proportion of AI applications developed in research settings are successfully integrated into healthcare delivery. Major barriers include poor interoperability with existing health information systems, complex regulatory requirements, limited scientific evidence, and the lack of clear clinical guidelines. Many AI tools have been evaluated through methodologically weak studies, often retrospective and lacking external

Working towards a master patient index and unique identifiers to improve health systems: the example of Myanmar.

In the health systems of many countries, there is neither a requirement to collect a minimum set of demographic information during patient registration nor a standard way of identifying patients. This impedes the provision of integrated, good-quality care for individual patients and, at the system level, prevents generation of the high-quality data necessary for effective management and continuous improvement. Assigning each patient a unique identifier (UID) to create a master patient index (MPI) is therefore essential to ensure data interoperability across all the points of patient care withi

POCUS Image Archiving in Emergency Medicine: A Systematic Review of Clinical and Financial Impacts.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential diagnostic tool in emergency medicine, providing rapid bedside information that supports clinical decision-making. However, the full potential of POCUS may extend beyond image acquisition, with effective documentation and integration into electronic health record (EHR) systems potentially contributing to improved clinical and operational outcomes. This systematic review evaluated the clinical, operational, and financial impacts of POCUS image archiving within EHRs in emergency department settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehen

Attitude and practices of district-level HMIS managers towards malaria routine reporting in Uganda: a 2024 cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Routine surveillance through the health management information system (HMIS), has taken a de facto management structure centered on district leadership, aided by the district health information software for reporting. System performance and credibility has long been derived on the basis of data indicators with little to no consideration of dimensions on human-resources in charge. This study therefore aimed to assess attitudes and practices of HMIS managers at district-level. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted across all 15 malaria endemicity regions of Uganda between J

A non-repudiated and traceable authorization system based on electronic health insurance cards.

Since anamnesis management in health care is directly relative to patients' privacy protection, how to resist malicious behaviors is an important issue in information security. In recent years, the developed electronic health insurance cards (eHIC) has been widely adopted as an identification certificate, which involves lots applications and provides convenience to both the patients and relative medical workers as well. There always existed some disputes and moral standards for these medical doctors who are to be confronted with these challenges. For example: The doctor discloses patient's ana

Availability and quality of routine morbidity data: review of studies in South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Routine health information systems (RHISs) provide data that are vital for planning and monitoring individual health. Data from RHISs could also be used for purposes for which they were not originally intended, provided that the data are of sufficient quality. For example, morbidity data could be used to inform burden of disease estimations, which serve as important evidence to prioritize interventions and promote health. The objective of this study was to identify and assess published quantitative assessments of data quality related to patient morbidity in RHISs in use in South Af
