Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital heart disease. The "VSD patch closure" is a very important and basic surgery frequently used for not only simple VSD but also many complex congenital heart defects such as tetralogy of Fallot and complete atrioventricular septal defect. To perform a complete VSD closure without any complications such as atrio-ventricular block, residual VSD, tricuspid valve regurgitation, and right ventricular outflow obstruction, the surgeons must understand the anatomical features of the various type of VSD and perform gentle stitch and ligation.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular septal defects are normally closed in early childhood, and post-surgically the patients are considered as healthy and fit as their peers. However, data are inconsistent. We exercise-tested a cohort of ventricular septal defect-operated patients and a group of matched controls to evaluate long-term physical fitness.
METHODS: Cardiopulmonary exercise capacity was tested on an ergometer cycle in 30 patients and 30 healthy age and gender-matched controls. Pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange were simultaneously measured breath-by-breath with Jaeger MasterScreen CPX® (Car

We present the case of a 2.5 year-old child with unbalanced atrioventricular septal defect due to a small left ventricle (LV) (mitral annulus of 10mm and a 0.4 ratio in relation to the tricuspid annulus, LVDD: 17 mm, LV Vd2: 15 ml/m(2) and LV/RV long-axis ratio of 0.71); he had a favorable outcome after biventricular surgical repair. Normal LV development was observed three months after the operation (mitral annulus of 22 mm, with a 0.84 ratio in relation to the tricuspid annulus, and LVDD of 30 mm). Current parameters for utilization of the hypoplastic ventricle are discussed.

The cardiac conduction system was examined in 2 hearts which had repair of atrioventricular septal defect. The first was from a child known to have had a prolonged P-R interval and the second was from a girl who developed complete heart block before submission to surgery. The atrioventricular conduction axis was histologically discontinuous in the first case, but preserved and surrounded by hemorrhage in the second case. This study draws attention to the inherent vulnerability of the cardiac conduction axis which must also be recognized before surgical intervention.

Gerbode defect is a communication from the left ventricle to right atrium and it could be categorized in congenital or acquired. It is a rare condition that can represent as much as 0.08% of all septal defects. Those acquired defects can be associated to endocarditis and after valvular surgery. The objective is to report a case of Gerbode atria-ventricular septal defect in Instituto Nacional de Cardiología Ignacio Chavez. The present case is about a 36 years old male patient with a typical presentation of mitral regurgitation, the echocardiogram reports a perforation in the anterior mitral lea

Thirty one patients with multiple ventricular septal defects were studied by cross sectional echocardiography, conventional pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, colour flow imaging, and left ventriculography to determine the relative diagnostic benefits and pitfalls of each technique. The patients studied had a wide range of congenital heart defects with 19 patients having isolated multiple ventricular septal defects, three with associated tetralogy of Fallot, five with double outlet right ventricle, three with complete transposition and ventricular septal defect, and one with a complete atriov

Various congenital heart diseases are associated with malalignment of a part of the ventricular septum. Most commonly, the outlet septum is malaligned toward the right or left ventricle. Less commonly, the whole or a major part of the ventricular septum is malaligned in relation to the atrial septal plane. Although the pathological conditions associated with ventricular septal malalignment have been well recognized, the descriptions are often confusing and sometimes incorrect. In this pictorial essay, we introduce our systematic approach to the assessment of malalignment type ventricular septa

The infracardiac variant of total anomalous pulmonary venous return occurs only rarely and is frequently obstructive in nature, thereby presenting in the early days of life [1]. An atrial septal defect is present in most cases and is necessary for survival, but a ventricular septal defect is extremely rare; only a few cases have been reported. Surgery is the only treatment option but carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality.

OBJECTIVE: Several surgical techniques for repair of a complete atrioventricular septal defect have been developed. However, the postoperative complications with these methods may lead to reoperation during follow-up. The aim of this report is to share our experience with a modified surgical technique for complete atrioventricular septal defect that has anatomic advantages postoperatively and could reduce the reoperation rate.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent repair of complete atrioventricular septal defect using a V-shaped double-layer patch between April 2011 and September 2019

The families of 26 patients with Ebstein's anomaly were examined. There were 120 first-degree relatives, 100 of whom were living, and 93 of these were examined. Information was available on 14 of the 20 who had died. No case of Ebstein's anomaly was found among the first-degree relatives, but 2 had ventricular septal defects and another, who died at 7 months, was said to have had congenital heart disease. In more distant relatives there were 6 with congenital heart disease, including 2 with ventricular septal defects and 2 with Fallot's tetralogy.

Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects with left-to-right shunt induces an abrupt overload of the left ventricle that may cause acute heart failure in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. We report two cases of ostium secundum atrial septal defects associated with left ventricular dysfunction of different etiology. The hemodynamic evaluation of left ventricular function during transient abolition of the shunt with the sizing balloon of the Amplatzer system helped to establish the most correct therapeutic strategy.

The objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence and survival rate of children born with a heart defect. A total of 816, 569 children live-born between 1980 and 1990 in Bohemia (52,478 km(2), population 6.314 million, western Czech Republic) were followed up and those with suspected heart disease referred to a center. Echocardiography was done in all of them. All dead children were autopsied. Congenital heart disease was found in 5030 of 816, 569 children (6.16 per 1000 live births). The most frequent conditions were ventricular septal defect (41.59%), atrial septal defect (8.67%),
