A total of 75 biopsied samples of cardia, fundus, body, and pyloric antrum from necropsied dogs that were submitted to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University from April 2003 to June 2004 were investigated. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. in canine stomach by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in comparison to histochemistry versus immunohistochemistry (IHC), and to correlate these diagnostic methods with the clinical significance in infected dogs. Histopathological results revealed 60.0% (45/75) of sa

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori causes different chronic infections that has been linked to the development of malignant disease of the aerodigestive tract. The larynx as a part of upper aerodigestive tract could be infected with this bacteria, mostly by gastroesophageal reflux.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our study rapid urease tests were performed on the tissue samples of 80 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 34 control with benign laryngeal pathology.
RESULTS: In the evaluation of 80 specimens with laryngeal cancer in 62.5% we recorded a positive urease test reaction point

Scientific evidence based on controlled clinical research confirm substantial benefits resulting from the eradication of H. pylori infection in such pathologies of the alimentary tract as: gastric peptic and duodenal ulcer (active or confirmed in the future and ulcer disease complications), MALT (Mucosa Associated Limphoid Tissue) lymphoma, atrophic gastritis, past stomach resection, gastric cancer in the family. The above group of indications is strongly recommended for eradicative treatment. During the last several years there have been many guidelines made by international and national spec

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) has been associated with the development of gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Although H. pylori infects up to more than half of the world's population, to date the precise modes of transmission has not been fully understood yet. Therefore a study was planned to investigate whether the tonsils and the adenoid tissue were the reservoir or the gate for the entrance of H. pylori.
METHODS: The adenotonsillectomy specimens obtained from 50 children, between two and 10 years of age were examined for H. Pylori colonization by the CLO-test method.

In the recent years, the prevalence of adenocarcinomas of the esophagus has substantially increased. At present its prevalence in the USA is comparable to that of squamous carcinoma (5/100,000 a year). In 80-90% of cases esophageal adenocarcinoma is located in 1/3 of the lower esophagus and is mainly derived from Barrett's esophagus (BE). The role of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in the pathogenesis of gastritis and gastric ulcer disease has been well known and documented. However, its role in the pathogenesis of esophageal reflux disease, its complications, particularly regarding the ris

BACKGROUND: Biliary tract cancer is a highly fatal disease with poor prognosis, but the aetiology is poorly understood.
AIM: We aimed to identify Helicobacter bilis infection in the gallbladder in patients with biliary tract disease.
METHODS: Archival gallbladder specimens from 34 patients (14 males and 20 females) with an average age of 61.4 +/- 12.2 years (mean +/- SE) were retrieved, consisting of 11 cases of gallbladder cancer, three of bile duct cancer, 16 of cholecystolithiasis and four of pancreatic cancer. DNA was extracted and nested PCR using primers specific for 16S rRNA of H. bil

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori has recently been associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. This study aimed to examine the association between H. pylori, histologic chronic gastritis, and intestinal metaplasia in early gastric cancers of different histologic types.
STUDY: Seventy-four patients who were surgically diagnosed as having early gastric cancer were included in this study. All tissue specimens were obtained from patients by endoscopic biopsy and were classified histopathologically as intestinal-type early gastric cancer in 55 patients and diffuse-type early gastric cancer

Helicobacter pylori is a causative organism for chronic gastritis and associated with peptic ulcer disease. Infection may be asymptomatic as well. Human immuno-deficiency virus infection predisposes to a multitude of opportunistic infections, many of them resulting in gastrointestinal symptoms. We studied the prevalence of H pylori co-infection with HIV and its correlation with gastrointestinal symptoms in HIV infected patients. Seventy-three consecutive HIV infected patients presenting to the medical out patient department of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh,

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common condition of unknown aetiology that is usually accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms and responds favourably to treatment with antibiotics.
AIMS/METHODS: This study was designed to examine the prevalence of gastric Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection verified by 13C-UBT, CLO-test, Hp culture and serology (IgG and IgA) and the presence of Hp in the oral cavity evidenced by CLO-test, Hp culture and saliva anti-Hp antibodies (IgG and IgA). During gastroduodenoscopy antral and fundic biopsy samples were taken for histological evaluation (the Sydney system). This

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric cancer development.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 475 patients were included into the study (270 gastric cancer patients and 205 controls). Helicobacter pylori status was determined by enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). The frequency of H. pylori infection in gastric cancer patients and the control group was compared. The relationship between the presence of anti-H. pylori antibodies and selected clinical and pathomorphological parameters was analysed.
RESULTS: H. pylori infection was stat

Helicobacter pylori infection of the stomach is one of the commonest chronic infections worldwide and in the Caribbean, over 50% of the population are affected. H pylori is probably transmitted from person to person by oro-faecal and oro-oral means. H pylori is directly associated with peptic ulcer disease, chronic antral gastritis, gastric carcinoma and B-cell lymphoma of the stomach. In patients with peptic ulcers and H pylori infection, eradication of infection with antibiotics significantly decreases recurrence of ulcers. All patients with H pylori related disease should be tested and trea

BACKGROUND: Pernicious anaemia is associated with atrophic body gastritis and considered an autoimmune disease. Whether Helicobacter pylori is involved in the induction of pernicious anaemia is uncertain.
AIMS: To investigate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in pernicious anaemia patients and to ascertain whether the Helicobacter pylori-positive patients had distinctive clinical and gastric morphofunctional characteristics.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A series of 81 consecutive pernicious anaemia patients underwent serological, functional and endoscopic/histological investigations.
