Seasonality and Temperature-Dependent Flight Dispersal of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and Other Vectors of Chagas Disease in Western Argentina.

Flight dispersal of Triatominae is affected by climatic conditions and determines the spatiotemporal patterns of house invasion and transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). We investigated the detailed time structure and temperature dependencies of flight occurrence of Triatoma infestans Klug (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and other triatomine species in a rural village of western Argentina by taking advantage of the attraction of adult triatomines to artificial light sources. Most of the village's streetlight posts were systematically inspected for triatomines twi

Residual efficacy of insecticides applied to exterior building material surfaces for control of nuisance infestations of Megacopta cribraria (Hemiptera: Plataspidae).

The plataspid Megacopta cribraria (F.), which was recently introduced to the United States, forms nuisance aggregations on the exteriors of homes when it seeks overwintering sites in the fall. Little to no published information is available on the efficacy of insecticides labeled for professional use and exterior applications on homes and other structures against this insect. In a series of three experiments, we evaluated the residual efficacy of nine insecticides incorporating pyrethroid, neonicotinoid, and oxadiazine active ingredients on surfaces composed of five exterior building materials

Morphological re-description of Kurisakia querciphila Takahashi, 1960 (Hemiptera, Aphididae, Thelaxinae) from South Korea, with notes on its Korean record.

BACKGROUND: The genus Kurisakia Takahashi, 1924 belongs to the subfamily Thelaxinae (Hemiptera, Aphididae) and currently comprises seven valid species worldwide. Kurisakia querciphila Takahashi, 1960 was originally described from Japan as a subspecies of K. onigurumii and was subsequently recognised as a distinct species. In Korea, Paik recorded K. onigurumii, a record that was later referred to K. querciphila. Nevertheless, the current National Species List of Korea lists only K. onigurumii within the genus Kurisakia, whereas K. querciphila is not included. NEW INFORMATION: We provide a deta

Integrative transcriptomic and microbiome analyses reveal thermal adaptation mechanisms in green and red color morphs of Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Under global warming, the frequency and severity of agricultural pest outbreaks have intensified, posing serious threats to agriculture. The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae)), an important agricultural pest, exhibits green and red color morphs and differentiated thermal tolerance, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, based on transcriptome and 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing, we analyzed the gene expression patterns and microbial community dynamics of green and red morphs of M. persicae under high-temperature stresses (30 °C and 35 °C) and

Physiological and oxidative stress response of carrot (Daucus carota L.) to jumping plant-louse Bactericera trigonica Hodkinson (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Carrot is an important vegetable crop grown worldwide. The major economic problem in carrot cultivation is yellow disease caused by Bactericera trigonica, which induces biotic stress and has the greatest impact on crop productivity. Comprehensive studies on the mechanism of carrot defense response to biotic stress caused by B. trigonica infestation have yet to be conducted. METHODS: The changes in photosynthetic pigments, proline, TPC, H2O2 and MDA content, DPPH radical scavenging ability, and antioxidant enzyme activity of SOD, CAT, and POX in carrot leaves in response to insect

Cucumber Plants Baited with Methyl Salicylate Accelerates Scymnus (Pullus) sodalis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Visiting to Reduce Cotton Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Infestation.

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major pest of many crops worldwide and a major cucumber plant pest in Taiwan. Because cotton aphids rapidly develop insecticide resistance and because of the insecticide residue problem, a safe and sustainable method is required to replace conventional chemical control methods. Methyl salicylate (MeSA), a herbivore-induced plant volatile, has been shown to affect aphids' behavior and attract the natural enemies of aphids for reducing their population. Therefore, this study examined the direct effects of MeSA on cotton aphid

Genetic diversity of the Chagas vector Triatoma dimidiata s.l. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) across geographic scales in a top-priority area for control.

Population genetic structure of arthropod disease vectors provides important information on vector movement and climate or other environmental variables that influence their distribution. This information is critical for data-driven vector control. In the first comprehensive study of the genetic structure of T. dimidiata s.l. (Latreille, 1811) we focus on an area of active transmission designated as a top priority for control. We examined a high number of specimens across a broad geographic area along the border of Guatemala and El Salvador including multiple spatial scales using a high number

Chromosome-level genome assembly of the mirid predator Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae), an important natural enemy in the rice ecosystem.

Though the genomes of many rice herbivorous pests have recently been well characterized, little is known about the genome of their natural enemies. Here, by using the Illumina and PacBio platforms, we sequenced and assembled the whole genome of the mirid species Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter (Hemiptera: Miridae), which is an economically and ecologically important natural enemy in the rice ecosystem acting as a dominant predator for planthoppers and leafhoppers in the field. Through Hi-C scaffolding, 1615 scaffolds with a total size of 338.08 Mb were successfully anchored onto 13 chromosomes

Comparison of life history parameters of two different genetic clusters of Bemisia tabaci MED (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) through single and cross mating.

Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is an economically important insect pest worldwide. Previously, we have reported that most B. tabaci Mediterranean (MED) populations occurring in greenhouse tomatoes in Korea have been displaced from well-differentiated two genetic clusters (C1 and C2) to one (C2) during one-year period. To elucidate factors responsible for this phenomenon, we compared life history parameters of these two different genetic clusters through single and cross mating experiments on two different host plants, cucumber and tobacco, at 26°C. A new slow-release formulation of methyl salicylate optimizes the alternative control of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in wheat fields.

BACKGROUND: Some defects, such as the short persistence and lower release stability of methyl salicylate (MeSA), must be resolved before efficient field application. To enhance the utilization efficacy of MeSA, a slow-release MeSA alginate bead was designed and tested to measure its release rate in a laboratory environment and to obtain insights into its ecological effects in wheat fields. RESULTS: In laboratory tests, both the 2.5 and 10 mL formulations of MeSA alginate beads (hereafter referred to as MeSA 2.5 and MeSA 10) release stably and continuously for at least 15 days, whereas pure Me
