Spontaneous resolution of herpes simplex blepharoconjunctivitis in children.

We observed three children, aged 1 year 8 months to 9 years 7 months, in whom herpes simplex blepharoconjunctivitis resolved promptly without treatment. A fourth child, 8 years old, developed probable toxic manifestations from topical vidarabine. These manifestations, as well as the blepharoconjunctivitis, resolved when the medication was discontinued. Herpes simplex ocular infection without corneal involvement in children is usually benign and self-limited.

Oral cancer and herpes simplex virus--a review.

Numerous studies have suggested that patients with oral cancer have an increased immune response to herpes simplex virus. However, the number of cases has always been small, and essential controls have not always been included. Laboratory experiments have shown that herpes simplex virus can be carcinogenic or cocarcinogenic under certain circumstances and so must be considered as a possible etiologic agent in oral cancer. This article reviews past research and suggests priorities for future investigations.

Neuroretinitis associated with herpes simplex encephalitis in an adult.

Unexpected disseminated herpes simplex infection in a newborn.

Disseminated herpes simplex virus type 2 was unexpectedly discovered in a baby delivered by primary cesarean section at 36 weeks' gestation prior to rupture of the membranes. The mother was free of orogenital lesions at each prenatal examination. Examination of the placenta revealed chorioamnionitis implicating an ascending infection from the mother's infected genital tract.

Eye infections with herpes simplex viruses in neonates.

A newborn with severe ocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 infection acquired in utero is presented to exemplify problems in diagnosis and management. A review of 297 newborns with HSV type 1 or type 2 infection reveals that about one-fifth demonstrate ocular involvement including one or more of the following: microphatalmia, conjunctivitis, keratitis, chorioretinitis, optic neuritis and cataracts.

Diagnosis of herpes simplex virus infection by immunofluorescence.

The utility of the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) technique for diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was examined by testing specimens for this agent from 31 patients with encephalitis or meningitis, 17 with conjunctivitis, 19 with genital disease, and 1 with genital disease and meningitis. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections necessitate careful management of urinary dysfunction and retention, which are underestimated conditions.
