Reprograming of epigenetic mechanisms controlling host insect immunity and development in response to egg-laying by a parasitoid wasp.

Parasitoids are insects that use other insects as hosts. They sabotage host cellular and humoral defences to promote the survival of their offspring by injecting viruses and venoms along with their eggs. Many pathogens and parasites disrupt host epigenetic mechanisms to overcome immune system defences, and we hypothesized that parasitoids may use the same strategy. We used the ichneumon wasp Pimpla turionellae as a model idiobiont parasitoid to test this hypothesis, with pupae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella as the host. We found that parasitoid infestation involves the suppression

Snail-borne parasitic diseases: an update on global epidemiological distribution, transmission interruption and control methods.

BACKGROUND: Snail-borne parasitic diseases, such as angiostrongyliasis, clonorchiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, opisthorchiasis, paragonimiasis and schistosomiasis, pose risks to human health and cause major socioeconomic problems in many tropical and sub-tropical countries. In this review we summarize the core roles of snails in the life cycles of the parasites they host, their clinical manifestations and disease distributions, as well as snail control methods. MAIN BODY: Snails have four roles in the life cycles of the parasites they host: as an intermediate host infected by the first

Host density increases parasite recruitment but decreases host risk in a snail-trematode system.

Most species aggregate in local patches. High host density in patches increases contact rate between hosts and parasites, increasing parasite transmission success. At the same time, for environmentally transmitted parasites, high host density can decrease infection risk to individual hosts, because infective stages are divided among all hosts in a patch, leading to safety in numbers. We tested these predictions using the California horn snail, Cerithideopsis californica (=Cerithidea californica), which is the first intermediate host for at least 19 digenean trematode species in California estu

THE RETTENMEYER ARMY ANT GUEST COLLECTION: A MULTIFACETED RESOURCE FOR INVESTIGATING THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OF THE ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN ARMY ANTS AND THEIR "GUESTS".

Less well known in the parasitological community than in the entomological community are the wonderfully complex systems of army ants and the multitude of taxa that associate with them, collectively termed guests. Guests include vertebrates such as antbirds, but also a diversity of arthropods such as beetles, flies, wasps, millipedes, thysanurans, and collembolans. In addition, a wide variety of mites live on the bodies of army ants and appear to have become modified in form to conform with a particular site on their ant host. The nature of the relationships between army ants and many of their

Co-existence at a cost: The outcome of competition between Steinernema and Heterorhabditis within the same insect host.

Competition within a single insect between the two genera of entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditis and Steinernema, was explored using H. downesi, H. bacteriophora, S. carpocapsae, and S. feltiae. Insect larvae were infected with one genus (primary invader) and then exposed to the other genus (secondary invader) after 24, 48 or 72 h. We hypothesised that (1) Steinernema and Heterorhabditis will not both reproduce within the same insect (2) reproductive success of the secondary invader will depend on identity of the primary invader and length of occupation and (3) nematodes will avoid ins

Exploring the interplay between Eimeria spp. infection and the host: understanding the dynamics of gut barrier function.

Coccidiosis is a global disease caused by protozoans, typically including Eimeria spp., which pose a significant threat to the normal growth and development of young animals. Coccidiosis affects mainly the gut, where parasite proliferation occurs. The intestinal barrier, which consists of chemical, mechanical, biological, and immune defences, plays a crucial role in protecting the host against pathogens, xenobiotics, and toxins present in the gastrointestinal tract. When animals ingest sporulated Eimeria spp. oocysts, these parasites primarily reproduce in the intestinal tract, causing damage

Comprehensive analysis of Toxoplasma gondii migration routes and tissue dissemination in the host.

Toxoplasma gondii is a highly adaptable intracellular parasite capable of infecting a wide range of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Following the ingestion of cysts and oocysts, the parasites rapidly emerge and transmigrate through the bloodstream, initiating a complex infection process. Despite reports on the parasite's dissemination, the mechanisms behind its migration remain unclear. Recent advances using innovative 3D models and various host systems are beginning to shed light on the migratory routes and strategies employed by T. gondii. This review compiles current knowledge on th

Seeing the unseen: illuminating Toxoplasma gondii's metabolic manipulation.

Intracellular infection by a pathogen induces significant rewiring of host cell signaling and biological processes. Understanding how an intracellular pathogen such as Toxoplasma gondii modulates host cell metabolism with single-cell resolution has been challenged by the variability of infection within cultures and difficulties in separating host and parasite metabolic processes. Snail microbiota and snail-schistosome interactions: axenic and gnotobiotic technologies.

The microbiota in the intermediate snail hosts of human schistosomes can significantly affect host biology. For decades, researchers have developed axenic snails to manipulate the symbiotic microbiota. This review summarizes the characteristics of symbiotic microbes in intermediate snail hosts and describes their interactions with snails, affecting snail growth, development, and parasite transmission ability. We focus on advances in axenic and gnotobiotic technologies for studying snail-microbe interactions and exploring the role of microbiota in snail susceptibility to Schistosoma infection.

The Toxoplasma Parasitophorous Vacuole: An Evolving Host-Parasite Frontier.

The parasitophorous vacuole is a unique replicative niche for apicomplexan parasites, including Toxoplasma gondii. Derived from host plasma membrane, the vacuole is rendered nonfusogenic with the host endolysosomal system. Toxoplasma secretes numerous proteins to modify the forming vacuole, enable nutrient uptake, and set up mechanisms of host subversion. Here we describe the pathways of host-parasite interaction at the parasitophorous vacuole employed by Toxoplasma and host, leading to the intricate balance of host defence versus parasite survival.

Effect of dose and frequency of exposure to infectious stages on trematode infection intensity and success in mussels.

Marine parasites such as trematodes often compromise the fitness of their hosts. Such effects are generally considered to be density-dependent, i.e. the greater the infection intensity in the host, the greater the detrimental impact on host fitness. However, the mechanisms determining infection in marine hosts are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effect of cercarial dose and exposure frequency (single vs. trickle infections) of a marine trematode parasite, Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae), on infection intensity and success in its second intermediate host, the

Furuncular Myiasis Caused by Cordylobia rodhaini (Diptera: Calliphoridae): A Case Report and a Literature Review.

Some African flies may cause myiasis not only in animals but also in humans, representing a serious health problem for the local population and for tourists. We report a rare case of furuncular myiasis due to larvae of Lund's fly Cordylobia rodhaini Gedoelst (Diptera: Calliphoridae), a species which usually parasitizes small mammals. The myiasis was diagnosed in Italy in a tourist guide who travelled in Central African rainforests of Uganda. The clinical case and the morphological criteria used for species identification are described here, together with a review of all literature cases of hum

Tightly regulated migratory subversion of immune cells promotes the dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii.

While the spread of Toxoplasma gondii within the infected human or animal host is associated with pathology, the pathways of dissemination have remained enigmatic. From the time point of entry into the gut, to the quiescent chronic infection in the central nervous system, Toxoplasma is detected and surveyed by immune cells that populate the tissues, for example dendritic cells. Paradoxically, this protective migratory function of leukocytes appears to be targeted by Toxoplasma to mediate its dissemination in the organism. Recent findings show that tightly regulated events take place shortly af

Strategies of Echinococcus species responses to immune attacks: implications for therapeutic tool development.

Echinococcus species have been studied as a model to investigate parasite-host interactions. Echinococcus spp. can actively communicate dynamically with a host to facilitate infection, growth and proliferation partially via secretion of molecules, especially in terms of harmonization of host immune attacks. This review systematically outlines our current knowledge of how the Echinococcus species have evolved to adapt to their host's microenvironment. This understanding of parasite-host interplay has implications in profound appreciation of parasite plasticity and is informative in designing no

[Effect of infection rate on parasite-host relations in opisthorchiasis].

The adaptation of the immunity system to recurrent helminth contamination in the natural development of opisthorchiasis accords with that of the underlying adaptation syndrome in chronic stress. The established correlation makes itself evident in the fact that in recurrent infections with Opisthorchis, the acute (a mobilization phase) and particularly chronic (a depletion phase) stages of infestation are characterized by a significant reduction in the overall and specific immunological responsiveness of the host, which is followed by the enhanced biological activity of the parasite. In recurre

Histoplasma variation and adaptive strategies for parasitism: new perspectives on histoplasmosis.

This review summarizes the biology of Histoplasma capsulatum in relation to a wide variety of corresponding pathologies in histoplasmosis. Features of these disease syndromes can be explained in part by natural variations within the fungal population and adaptations made by individual organisms to specific environments. H. capsulatum grows as mycelia and conidia in the soil; once inhaled, the organism undergoes a dramatic morphological and physiological conversion to a yeast form. The yeasts proliferate within the phagolysosomes of macrophages, using a variety of specific strategies for intrac

Biology of African trypanosomes in the tsetse fly.

African trypanosomes present several features of interest to cell biologists. These include: a repressible single mitochondrion with a large mass of mitochondrial DNA, the kinetoplast; a special organelle, the glycosome, which houses the enzymes of the glycolytic chain; a surface coat of variable glycoprotein which enables the parasite to evade the mammalian host's immune response; and a unique flagellum-to-host attachment mechanism associated with novel cytoskeletal elements. Trypanosome development during the life cycle involves cyclical activation and repression of genes controlling these a
