Effect of pulmonary vein isolation on the left-to-right atrial dominant frequency gradient in human atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated the existence of a left-to-right atrial dominant frequency gradient during paroxysmal but not persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) in humans. One possible mechanism of the left-to-right dominant frequency gradient involves the role of the pulmonary veins (PVs) in AF maintenance. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of PV isolation on the dominant frequency gradient and outcome after PV isolation. METHODS: Patients with either paroxysmal or persistent AF were studied. Recordings were made from catheters in the coronary sinus (CS

Loss-of-function mutations in the EGF-CFC gene CFC1 are associated with human left-right laterality defects.

All vertebrates display a characteristic asymmetry of internal organs with the cardiac apex, stomach and spleen towards the left, and the liver and gall bladder on the right. Left-right (L-R) axis abnormalities or laterality defects are common in humans (1 in 8,500 live births). Several genes (such as Nodal, Ebaf and Pitx2) have been implicated in L-R organ positioning in model organisms. In humans, relatively few genes have been associated with a small percentage of human situs defects. These include ZIC3 (ref. 5), LEFTB (formerly LEFTY2; ref. 6) and ACVR2B (encoding activin receptor IIB; ref

[Contents and molecular forms of human atrial natriuretic peptide in right and left auricle in patients with heart disease].

Contents and molecular forms of human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP) in right and left auricle were analyzed by reverse phase high liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), coupled with radioimmunoassay for hANP. Analyses were done with auricles taken from 4 autopsied cases without heart disease, and 13 patients with heart disease. Both right and left auricular hANP contents in patients with heart disease were higher than those obtained at autopsy. In patients with mitral stenosis (MS) or mitral regurgitation (MR) who have left atrial pressure and/or volume overload, hANP contents in left auricle we

Rhythmic beta-frequency TMS over human right parietal cortex strengthens visual size illusions.

Rhythmic brain activity has been proposed to structure visual processing. Here we investigated the causal contributions of parietal beta oscillations to context-dependent visual size perception, which is indicated by the classic Ebbinghaus and Ponzo illusions. On each trial, rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the left or right superior parietal lobule in a train of five pulses at beta frequency (20 Hz). Immediately after the last pulse of the stimulation train, participants were presented with the illusory configuration, and performed a size-matching task. The re

Missing what's right under your nose: Failed appetitive and aversive audio-olfactory conditioning in humans.

The comparison of physiological mechanisms underlying appetitive and aversive conditioning is often challenging due to the involvement of stimuli from different modalities with potentially disparate effective mechanisms (e.g., pain stimuli versus monetary rewards). The olfactory system offers a unique opportunity to examine both types of conditioning in humans, as isointense odors can serve as comparably pleasant and unpleasant stimuli. To study physiological and behavioral responses during appetitive and aversive learning, we employed odors as unconditioned stimuli (US) in a within-subjects d

Effective networks mediate right hemispheric dominance of human 40 Hz auditory steady-state response.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) are induced from the brainstem to the neocortex when humans hear periodic amplitude-modulated tonal signals. ASSRs have been argued to be a key marker of auditory temporal processing and pathological reorganization of ASSR - a biomarker of neurodegenerative disorders. However, most of the earlier studies reporting the neural basis of ASSRs were focused on looking at individual brain regions. Here, we seek to characterize the large-scale directed information flow among cortical sources of ASSR entrained by 40 Hz external signals. Entrained brain rhythms wi

Mitochondrial respiration analysis in permeabilized porcine left ventricular and human right atrial specimens with ischemia-reperfusion.

Mitochondrial function is critical to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and cardioprotection. The measurement of mitochondrial function in isolated mitochondria requires cardiac specimens of about 300 mg and is therefore only possible at the end of an animal experiment or during cardiosurgical interventions in humans. As an alternative, mitochondrial function can be measured in permeabilized myocardial tissue (PMT) specimens of about 2-5 mg, which are retrieved by sequential biopsies in animal experiments and during cardiac catheterization in humans. We attempted to validate measurements

Removal of Unusual Foreign Metal Object (Nail) from the Right Ventricle of Human Heart: A Case Report.

Migration of foreign bodies (FB) with the blood flow to the heart is a rare, but very alarming condition as it may lead to life-threatening complications and death. Objects that are larger than 5 mm in diameter and/or irregular in shape are recommended for removal from extra- and intracardiac areas to prevent incurable embolization. Surgical extraction of intracardiac objects is a serious surgical challenge associated with difficulties to operate, during the continuous movement of the heart, and identify the exact FB location. Early diagnosis and timely removal of FBs are crucial treatment fac

Analysis of cis and trans Requirements for DNA Replication at the Right-End Hairpin of the Human Bocavirus 1 Genome.

UNLABELLED: Parvoviruses are single-stranded DNA viruses that use the palindromic structures at the ends of the viral genome for their replication. The mechanism of parvovirus replication has been studied mostly in the dependoparvovirus adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) and the protoparvovirus minute virus of mice (MVM). Here, we used human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) to understand the replication mechanism of bocaparvovirus. HBoV1 is pathogenic to humans, causing acute respiratory tract infections, especially in young children under 2 years old. By using the duplex replicative form of the HBoV1 genome

Anodal-tDCS over the human right occipital cortex enhances the perception and memory of both faces and objects.

Accurate face processing skills are pivotal for typical social cognition, and impairments in this ability characterise various clinical conditions (e.g., prosopagnosia). No study to date has investigated whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can causally enhance face processing. In addition, the category- and the process-specificity of tDCS effects, as well as the role of the timing of neuromodulation with respect to the execution of cognitive tasks are still unknown. In this single-blind, sham-controlled study, we examined whether the administration of anodal-tDCS (a-tDCS) ov

Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of hexavalent chromium in human and North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) lung cells.

Humans and cetaceans are exposed to a wide range of contaminants. In this study, we compared the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of a metal pollutant, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], which has been shown to cause damage in lung cells from both humans and North Atlantic right whales. Our results show that Cr induces increased cell death and chromosome damage in lung cells from both species with increasing intracellular Cr ion levels. Soluble Cr(VI) induced less of a cytotoxic and genotoxic effect based on administered dose in right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) cells than in human (Homo sapiens) ce

Optimal electrogram voltage recording technique for detecting the acute ablative tissue injury in the human right atrium.

BACKGROUND: The optimal recording technique of the electrogram voltage for detecting abnormal atrial tissue remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of various recording techniques on the electrogram voltage after the delivery of ablation therapy in the human right atrium (RA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Noncontact mapping was performed in 27 patients with typical atrial flutter (mean age = 63 +/- 16, males = 20). Noncontact unipolar and bipolar electrograms were obtained before and after cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) linear ablation. All unipolar electrograms were acquired w

Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ regulatory protein gene expression in human right atrium under hemodynamic overload.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) mRNA expression is reduced in the failing human myocardium. However, it is not known whether SR Ca2+-regulatory protein gene expression is altered in human myocardial tissue subjected to pressure overload or volume overload. We sought to determine whether SR Ca2+-regulatory protein gene expression is altered in human atrial tissue subjected to mechanical overload. We obtained right atrial myocardial tissue (about 250mg) at open-heart surgery from three groups of patients: no hemodynamic overload to the right atrium (control gro

Left-right axis malformations associated with mutations in ACVR2B, the gene for human activin receptor type IIB.

Targeted disruption of the mouse activin receptor type IIB gene (Acvr2b) results in abnormal left-right (LR) axis development among Acvr2b-/- homozygotes [Oh and Li, 1997: Genes Dev 11:1812-1826]. The resulting malformations include atrial and ventricular septal defects, right-sided morphology of the left atrium and left lung, and spleen hypoplasia. Based on these results, we hypothesized that mutations in the type IIB activin receptor gene are associated with some cases of LR axis malformations in humans. We report here characterization of the ACVR2B genomic structure, analysis of ACVR2B spli

Medical Negligence, Systemic Deficiency, or Denial of Emergency Healthcare? Reflections on the European Court of Human Rights Grand Chamber Judgment in Lopes de Sousa Fernandes v. Portugal of 19 December 2017 and Previous Case-law.

On 19 December 2017 the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered a judgment in the Lopes de Sousa Fernandes v. Portugal case. The judgment may be described as one of the hard cases dealing with a healthcare context, as it aimed to clarify the scope of positive substantive state obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights and the conditions of international responsibility. This article explores the judgment against the wider background of the previous case-law of the Court. It focuses on the question of the classification of healthcare problems into th…

Right posterior theta reflects human parahippocampal phase resetting by salient cues during goal-directed navigation.

Animal and computational work indicate that phase resetting of theta oscillations (4-12 Hz) in the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) by salient events (e.g., reward, landmarks) facilitates the encoding of goal-oriented information during navigation. Although well studied in animals, this mechanism has not been empirically substantiated in humans. In the present article, we present data from two studies (Study 1: asynchronous electroencephalography (EEG)-magnetoencephalography (MEG) | Study 2: simultaneous EEG-fMRI) to investigate theta phase resetting and its relationship with PHG blood oxygenation

Meeting the reproductive health needs of female sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire: protecting the human right to dignified health.

The sexual and reproductive health needs of female sex workers (FSW) are often understudied and underserved in the context of HIV-related research in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa. We assessed the lived experiences of FSW across Côte d'Ivoire to characterize unmet reproductive health needs and opportunities to address them. From February-August, 2020, ENDA Santé, Côte d'Ivoire conducted 75 in-depth interviews and 15 focus group discussions with FSW and community informants in five cities in Côte d'Ivoire. Themes that emerged included the inconsistent use of contraception

Right Ventricular Sarcomere Contractile Depression and the Role of Thick Filament Activation in Human Heart Failure With Pulmonary Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) contractile dysfunction commonly occurs and worsens outcomes in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and pulmonary hypertension (HFrEF-PH). However, such dysfunction often goes undetected by standard clinical RV indices, raising concerns that they may not reflect aspects of underlying myocyte dysfunction. We thus sought to characterize RV myocyte contractile depression in HFrEF-PH, identify those components reflected by clinical RV indices, and uncover underlying biophysical mechanisms. METHODS: Resting, calcium-, and load-dependent mec
