Modulation of the toxic effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles by exogenous salicylic acid pretreatment in Chenopodium murale L.

Due to many uses of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in various industries, the release of these particles in the environment and their effects on living organisms is inevitable. In this study, the role of salicylic acid (SA) pretreatments in modulating the toxicity of ZnO NPs was investigated using a hydroponic system. After pretreatment with different concentrations of SA (0, 25, 75, and 150 μM), Chenopodium murale plants were exposed to ZnO NPs (50 mg L-1). The results showed that exogenous SA increased the length, weight, chlorophyll, proline, starch, and soluble sugars in the plants. Be

Effects of Exogenous Organic Acids on Cd Tolerance Mechanism of Salix variegata Franch. Under Cd Stress.

Chelate induction of organic acids has been recognized to enhance metal uptake and translocation in plants, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, seedlings of Salix variegata were hydroponically exposed to the combinations of Cd (0 and 50 μM) and three exogenous organic acids (100 μM of citric, tartaric, or malic acid). Plant biomass, antioxidant enzymes, non-protein thiol compounds (NPT) content, and the expression of candidate genes associated with Cd accumulation and tolerance were determined. Results showed that Cd significantly inhibited plant biomass but stimulated

Dryas as a Model for Studying the Root Symbioses of the Rosaceae.

The nitrogen-fixing root nodule symbiosis is restricted to four plant orders: Fabales (legumes), Fagales, Cucurbitales and Rosales (Elaeagnaceae, Rhamnaceae, and Rosaceae). Interestingly all of the Rosaceae genera confirmed to contain nodulating species (i.e., Cercocarpus, Chamaebatia, Dryas, and Purshia) belong to a single subfamily, the Dryadoideae. The Dryas genus is particularly interesting from an evolutionary perspective because it contains closely related nodulating (Dryas drummondii) and non-nodulating species (Dryas octopetala). The close phylogenetic relationship between these two sp

Calcium acetate-induced reduction of cadmium accumulation in Oryza sativa: Expression of auto-inhibited calcium-ATPase and cadmium transporters.

Calcium (Ca) signalling has an essential role in regulating plant responses to various abiotic stresses. This study applied Ca in various forms (Ca acetate and CaCl2 ) and concentrations to reduce cadmium (Cd) concentration in rice and propose a possible mechanism through which Ca acts to control the Cd concentration in rice. The results showed that supplementation of Cd-contaminated soil with Ca acetate reduced the Cd concentration in rice after exposure for 7 days in both hydroponic and soil conditions. The possible involvement of the auto-inhibited Ca2+ -ATPase gene (ACA) might act to contr

Minimum magnesium concentrations for photosynthetic efficiency in wheat and sunflower seedlings.

Photosynthetic processes in the chloroplast depend on the abundance of magnesium (Mg) in relatively high amounts; hence chloroplasts might react more sensitive to Mg-deficiency than other physiological processes within other organelles. Most authors suggest a critical Mg concentration to be 1.5 mg g-1 DM for biomass and yield formation. However, it is not yet elucidated whether this value also applies to photosynthetic processes. The present study focused on the response of photosynthetic processes to different Mg tissue concentrations. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sunflower (Helianthus annuu

Comprehensive Analysis of Rice Laccase Gene (OsLAC) Family and Ectopic Expression of OsLAC10 Enhances Tolerance to Copper Stress in Arabidopsis.

Laccases are encoded by a multigene family and widely distributed in plant genomes where they play roles oxidizing monolignols to produce higher-order lignin involved in plant development and stress responses. We identified 30 laccase genes (OsLACs) from rice, which can be divided into five subfamilies, mostly expressed during early development of the endosperm, growing roots, and stems. OsLACs can be induced by hormones, salt, drought, and heavy metals stresses. The expression level of OsLAC10 increased 1200-fold after treatment with 20 μM Cu for 12 h. The laccase activities of OsLAC10 were c

Mg deficiency changes the isoenzyme pattern of reactive oxygen species-related enzymes and regulates NADPH-oxidase-mediated ROS signaling in cotton.

The aim of this work was to investigate changes in isoenzyme patterns of enzymes related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in cotton under Mg deficiency. Moreover, we aimed to elucidate how a ROS producer, NADPH oxidase (NOX), responds to changing Mg levels. Cotton plants were grown with different concentrations of MgSO 4 in hydroponic medium to create nutrient deficiency (0, 75, 150, 1000 µM Mg). Gradual decreases in gr

Strategies for Cd accumulation in Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter: role of the cell wall, non-protein thiols and organic acids.

Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter is plant species commonly found in degraded zones of Asturias (Spain), where it accumulates high levels of Cd, but the mechanisms involved in this response in non-model plants have not been elucidated. In this way, we analysed the fraction of the total Cd bound to the cell walls, the ultrastructural localization of this metal, and non-protein thiol and organic acid concentrations of two clones of D. viscosa: DV-A (from a metal-polluted soil) and DV-W (from a non-polluted area). After 10 days of hydroponic culture with Cd, fractionation and ultrastructural locali

Interaction of veterinary antibiotic tetracyclines and copper on their fates in water and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) may provide an alternative solution for the removal of co-contamination between antibiotics and heavy metals from livestock and poultry wastewater. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate interaction of tetracyclines (TCs) and copper (Cu) on growth of E. crassipes, removal of TCs and Cu by plants and their fates in solution. After 20 days, plant growth, concentrations and accumulation of Cu and TCs in plants, removal by plants, and dissipation in solution were significantly influenced by interaction of Cu and TCs. Influence of only Cu or TCs o

Variation and inheritance of iron reductase activity in the roots of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and association with seed iron accumulation QTL.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia is a global problem which often affects women and children of developing countries. Strategy I plants, such as common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) take up iron through a process that involves an iron reduction mechanism in their roots; this reduction is required to convert ferric iron to ferrous iron. Root absorbed iron is critical for the iron nutrition of the plant, and for the delivery of iron to the shoot and ultimately the seeds. The objectives of this study were to determine the variability and inheritance for iron reductase activity in a range of genot

Instrumentation for plant health and growth in space.

The present-day plant growth facilities ("greenhouses") for space should be equipped with monitors and controllers of ambient parameters within the chamber because spacecraft environmental variations can be unfavorable to plants. Moreover, little is known about the effects of spaceflight on the greenhouse and rooting media. Lack of information about spaceflight effects on plants necessitates supplying space greenhouses with automatic, non-invasive monitors of, e.g., gas exchange rate, water and nutrient ion uptake, plant mass, temperature and water content of leaves. However, introduction of a

Detection of Bacterial Internalization in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) Leaves Grown in Aquaponic Systems with Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Under Microbial Challenge.

Aquaponic systems are increasingly recognized as sustainable technologies for integrated fish and vegetable production. However, concerns remain regarding the potential internalization of human pathogens into vegetables grown in these systems. This study assessed the risk of pathogen internalization in lettuce leaves grown in aquaponic systems with Nile tilapia challenged with Escherichia coli or Vibrio cholerae. The system comprised nine fish tanks, eighteen hydroponic pipes, and eighty-one lettuce plants, with tanks assigned to three treatments. Samples of water, fish gut, fish blood, and le

Temporal and Size Dependent Uptake of Micro- and Nano Plastics in an Edible Plant.

Micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) uptake in the edible plant basil (Ocimum basilicu) was investigated using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) MNPs with broad size distributions labeled with dibutyl phthalate (DBP), tantalum(V) ethoxide, or rhodamine 640 perchlorate. Basil plants were grown hydroponically in media containing one of the labeled MNPs types. DBP concentrations in roots and shoots were measured by GC-MS as a proxy for MNP uptake. MNP accumulation increased over time with plant growth, with root concentrations exceeding shoot concentrations by more than 2 orders of magnitude. After 8 week

Darkness Attenuates the Early Transcriptional Response to Phosphate Deficiency in Soybean Roots.

Phosphate (Pi) deficiency induces responses that enhance Pi uptake and utilization. Light may influence these responses through photosynthetic carbon supply and signaling. We examined how light affects the early root transcriptional response to Pi deficiency in hydroponically grown soybean. Plants were exposed to phosphate-sufficient (+P) or phosphate-deficient (-P) conditions for 30 h under a light/dark cycle or continuous darkness. Root transcriptomes were analyzed using Oxford Nanopore cDNA sequencing. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that transcriptomes separated mainly by light,

Auxin-Rich Extract from Pseudomonas rhodesiae Enhances Cadmium Tolerance and Uptake in Cattail.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution has become an increasing environmental and public health concern. Phytoremediation offers a sustainable strategy for metal removal, and its efficiency can be enhanced by microbial-derived biostimulants. This study investigated an auxin-rich culture supernatant extract from Pseudomonas rhodesiae GRC140 as a biostimulant to improve Cd tolerance and uptake in cattail (Typha latifolia). The supernatant extract, obtained after 84 h of bacterial growth in Luria Bertani medium supplemented with 0.1% L-tryptophan, was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrosco

Deciphering underexplored rhizosphere processes: root acquisition of citric acid and its metabolic journey in tomato.

Root-exuded organic acids are crucial in mitigating iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies, and their biosynthesis and secretion require significant metabolic investment. Recent studies have shown that roots can also uptake exudates. We hypothesized that citric acid uptake increases under Fe and P deficiencies, declines over time, and contributes to primary metabolism. We investigated citric acid uptake, translocation, and metabolization in Fe- and P-deficient tomato plants grown hydroponically using 13C-labelling with bulk stable-isotope and compound-specific stable-isotope analysis. Rice Root Iron Plaque as a Molecular Sieve: Iron Oxyhydroxide-Mediated Selective Sequestration of Arsenate over Phosphate.

Iron oxyhydroxides in rice root iron plaques act as a molecular sieve, enabling rice to selectively uptake phosphorus while sequestering arsenic in paddies; however, the molecular mechanism of this filtration is still unclear. Here, we selected ferrihydrite and goethite, the active components of iron plaques, to elucidate this selective filtration. We demonstrated that under equimolar concentrations, ferrihydrite and goethite exhibited higher affinity for arsenate, substituting 31.36% to 46.99% of preadsorbed phosphate across pH 4.0-8.0. Then, our Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal

Polystyrene nanoplastics increase tetracycline residues while aggravating nutrient dysregulation and ultrastructural damage in the roots of Chrysanthemum coronarium L.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and tetracycline (TC) increasingly co-occur in environments, raising concerns about their combined effects on edible plants. Previous studies have mainly focused on single-pollutant toxicity or isolated physiological endpoints, leaving the links among antibiotic retention, root-zone chemistry, nutrient status, and cellular injury unresolved. Here, Chrysanthemum coronarium L. was hydroponically exposed for 7 d to TC (10 mg L⁻¹), PS-NPs (5-15 mg L⁻¹), or their mixtures. PS-NPs increased parent TC residues measured in root tissues by 6.0-35.8%, cell wall represen

Size-dependent uptake of chromium colloids in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Chromium (Cr) contamination in agricultural soils poses a significant threat to food safety. In paddy soil, Cr tends to exist as colloidal Cr, instead of soluble Cr. However, little is known regarding the absorption capability of colloidal Cr in rice. Therefore, this study explores the differential absorption of soluble and colloidal Cr in rice through hydroponic experiments, further investigating size-dependent uptake of Cr colloids, focusing on the role of endocytosis and the effects of adding endocytosis inhibitors. The results demonstrate the accumulation of Cr in rice roots for treatments
