Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS), Hypnosis, and Hypnotizability: Literature Review and Future Directions.

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) stands as an advanced technology embraced by researchers and clinicians to influence thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The prevalent NIBS methods include transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), both proficient in either exciting or depressing neural activities in specific cortical regions. Recently, NIBS has been integrated into hypnosis research with the goal of enhancing hypnotizability. Specifically, the limited existing studies have predominantly focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) …

Medical hypnosis mitigates laboratory dyspnoea in healthy humans: a randomised, controlled experimental trial.

QUESTION: Dyspnoea persisting despite treatments of underlying causes requires symptomatic approaches. Medical hypnosis could provide relief without the untoward effects of pharmacological approaches. We addressed this question through experimentally induced dyspnoea in healthy humans (inspiratory threshold loading (excessive inspiratory effort) and carbon dioxide stimulation (air hunger)). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 20 volunteers (10 women, aged 21-40 years) were studied on four separate days. The order of the visits was randomised in two steps: firstly, the "inspiratory threshold loading first" …

An exploratory study of hypnosis-induced blood count changes in chronically stressed individuals.

Hypnosis is a clinically accepted relaxation technique known for stress reduction. Results from hematological research provide evidence of changes in blood components through hypnosis. However, these hematological effects have been rarely examined. Hence, we exploratively investigated the effect of a single relaxation hypnosis on the hemogram in stressed individuals, assuming a reduction of leukocytes, thrombocytes, and erythrocytes (primary outcomes). Additionally, a reduction in the erythrocyte-related parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit), and an increase in plasma volume was hypothesized (se…

Effect of Self-Hypnosis on Test Anxiety among Secondary School Students in Malaysia.

Test anxiety comprises cognitive, physiological, and behavioral reactions due to anxiety about failure or a lower academic performance score on an exam or evaluation. This study examined the effect of self-hypnosis on reducing test anxiety among upper secondary school students using a quantitative methodology with a pre-experimental design. The prevalence of test anxiety was measured using the Friedben Test Anxiety Scale (FTAS) and students' demographic data were collected. Twenty-two 16-year-old students with moderate to high test anxiety were selected for a self-hypnosis intervention over a …

Hypnosis therapy for self-esteem in pediatric neurology practice: A pilot exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: A number of pediatric conditions are chronic, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), idiopathic epilepsies, or anxiety disorder. They all have an impact on self-esteem with consequences on the quality of life. Hypnosis is a therapeutic strategy that consists in putting into trance an individual who becomes receptive to appropriate suggestions. Such an approach is now considered a simple and safe therapy with limited cost. The aim of the present study was to show the feasibility of hypnosis for improving self-esteem in children with the aforementioned conditions. …

Practicing self-hypnosis to reduce chronic pain: A qualitative exploratory study of HYlaDO.

Background: Nearly a quarter of Canada's population suffers from chronic pain, a long-lasting medical condition marked by physical pain and psychological suffering. Opioids are the primary treatment for pain management in this condition; yet, this approach involves several undesirable side effects. In contrast to this established approach, non-pharmacological interventions, such as medical hypnosis, represent an efficient alternative for pain management in the context of chronic pain. HYlaDO is a self-hypnosis program designed to improve pain management for people with chronic pain. Purpose: T…

Medical hypnosis and orthopedic hand surgery: pain perception, postoperative recovery, and therapeutic comfort.

Orthopedic hand-surgery patients experience severe pain postoperatively, yet they must engage in painful exercises and wound care shortly after surgery; poor patient involvement may result in loss of function and disfigurement. This study tested a hypnosis intervention designed to reduce pain perception, enhance postsurgical recovery, and facilitate rehabilitation. Using a quasi-experimental research design, 60 hand-surgery patients received either usual treatment or usual treatment plus hypnosis. After controlling for gender, race, and pretreatment scores, the hypnosis group showed significan…

Electroencephalography Oscillations During Prehypnosis and Hypnosis in Subjects With High and Low Dissociative Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Hypnosis is a multifaceted phenomenon that refers to suggestions for creating desirable behavior, experience, and physiological changes. Most electroencephalographic (EEG) research in hypnosis has allocated people into two groups of high and low hypnotizables. Hence, the empirical data are somewhat controversial, and there is no general agreement about the neurophysiology of hypnosis. On the other hand, the dissociation theory of hypnosis posits that people candidates for hypnosis are typically prone to dissociation, and individuals divide into two groups: High dissociative (HD) …

Assessment of Quality and Reliability of YouTube Videos on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy including Hypnosis.

Hypnosis combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-hypnosis) is a type of psychological treatment that focuses on how people think and behave in various mental and medical illnesses. It treats behavioral and emotional issues by tapping into the subconscious mind. Patients who are hypnotized are more open to new ideas and less prone to decline hard ones. The result is that it is simpler to adopt the healthy cognitive patterns and habits that CBT tries to promote. YouTube is a great resource for health-related education that has the power to greatly impact the choices and actions of medica…

Hypnosis efficacy on nicotine addiction: An analysis of EEG microstates and brain oscillation entropy.

Despite hypnosis showing efficacy in treating nicotine dependence, its neurobiological impacts on a smokers' brain function remain underexplored. Thirty-three smokers underwent electroencephalography (EEG) recording during pre- and post-hypnosis sessions, each 8 minutes long, alongside Tobacco Craving Questionnaire (TCQ) assessments. Four distinct EEG microstate classes (A, B, C, D) were identified. Daily cigarette consumption negatively correlated with the microstate A duration (r = -0.39, P = 0.03). Hypnosis increased the microstate A parameters while decreasing those of microstate B. Reduce…

Glabridin Hypnosis in Zebrafish Larvae Is Associated With Effects on Multiple Anesthetic Target Receptors.

BACKGROUND: R -Glabridin is a major flavonoid of licorice ( Glycyrrhiza glabra ) root and known to modulate GABA A receptors, which are targets of many clinical hypnotics. However, R -glabridin hypnotic activity has not been reported in animals. METHODS: Inverted photomotor responses (IPMRs) were used to assess the hypnotic effects of natural R -glabridin and synthetic R/S -glabridin in wild-type zebrafish larvae and transgenic larvae lacking functional GABA A receptor β3 subunits (β3 0/0 ). Neuroscientific results of experimental studies on the control of acute pain with hypnosis and suggested analgesia.

This narrative review summarizes a representative collection of electrophysiological and imaging studies on the neural processes and brain sources underlying hypnotic trance and the effects of hypnotic suggestions on the processing of experimentally induced painful events. It complements several reviews on the effect of hypnosis on brain processes and structures of chronic pain processing. Based on a summary of previous findings on the neuronal processing of experimentally applied pain stimuli and their effects on neuronal brain structures in healthy subjects, three neurophysiological methods …
