BACKGROUND: Homelessness among older African American women is emerging as a serious social problem. The increasing cost of living, diminishing community resources, and shrinking retirement benefits, as well as reduced social services are resulting in greater numbers of older minority women becoming homeless.
AIMS: This investigation explores the relevance of faith and spirituality to an advocacy assessment designed to help participants resolve issues that operate as barriers to their leaving and staying out of homelessness.
METHODS: A substudy of a larger research and development project wa

OBJECTIVES: Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) not only fear social rejection, but accumulating evidence also shows that they are indeed less liked than their non-anxious counterparts. Three factors are hypothesized to play a role in this social anxiety-social rejection relationship: (1) social performance; (2) elicited negative emotions, and (3) perceived similarity.
METHOD: Patients with SAD (N=63) and control participants (N=27) were observed during a 5 minutes 'getting acquainted' conversation with a male and female confederate who rated their social performance. Video-observers

Upper extremity pain attributed to workplace exposure is a growing concern in medicine today. This study was undertaken to investigate the psychological findings in patients with chronic upper extremity pain attributed to workplace exposure. Sixty-three consecutive patients were evaluated. All patients underwent a history and physical examination by a hand surgeon and a psychological evaluation by a licensed psychologist, including a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2). Physical and psychological findings were then compared. Forty-one patients (65%) showed abnormalities on M

The rapid growth of emerging digital technologies is reshaping youth psychological well-being and religious identity in increasingly plural social contexts. This systematic review examines the impact of deepfakes, gaming, the metaverse, virtual reality, and chat applications on youth well-being, with particular attention to religion as both a protective factor and a target of digital harm. A PRISMA 2020-guided systematic review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2025, focused on youth aged approximately

Sobremesa is a community-based initiative centered on emotional well-being, cultural connection, and collective care. Created by first-generation, bilingual Latine social workers in partnership with SOMOSLOUD, this Chicagobased series brings Latine adults together for monthly gatherings grounded in food, conversation, and cultural traditions. Rather than replicating clinical spaces, Sobremesa offers an informal yet intentional setting where participants can reflect, listen, and connect across English, Spanish, and Spanglish. Each gathering includes a grounding or healing activity, small-group

The mechanisms and boundary conditions through which major identity affects university students' depression remain unclear. To fill this gap, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between major identity and university students' depression, revealing the mediating role of self-esteem in this relationship and the moderating role of perceived social support. A total of 436 Chinese university students participated in this study. The results showed that major identity was significantly and negatively related to depression and significantly and positively related to self-esteem. Self-e

Biracial Black-White adolescents report more psychological distress than most monoracial youth, but less is known about the factors that precede or protect Biracial youth from such distress. This study examines how racial identity invalidation (RII; the denial of a Biracial person's racial identity/belonging) relates to depressive symptoms and satisfaction with life (SWL) among 330 Biracial Black-White adolescents in the United States (67% boys; Mage = 14.8, SD = 1.5). Guided by the identity capital model, it also examines whether racial flexibility (e.g., shifting between different racial ide

Throughout my career, I have pursued three theories related to intergroup prejudice--each with a different mentor. Each theory and its supporting research help us to understand prejudice and ways to ameliorate the problem. This autobiographical review article summarizes some of the advances in these three areas during the past six decades. For authoritarianism, the article advocates removing political content from its measurement, linking it with threat and dismissive-avoidant attachment, and studying how authoritarians avoid intergroup contact. Increased work on relative deprivation made poss

This case report describes a four-decade presentation of a non-homosexual gender dysphoric male patient. The case material was collected from two main sources. One of the authors had weekly therapy sessions with the patient over a period of 2 years almost 15 years after sex reassignment surgery. Information was also gained from the patient's medical records covering the period from the early 1960s to the early 1990s. Over the years, the patient fulfilled the criteria for different diagnoses: overanxious reaction of childhood, fetishism and transvestism during adolescence, and transsexualism du

Clinical researchers have noted that compared with other diagnostic groups, adults with Borderline Personality Disorder tend to demonstrate relatively more thought disorder on unstructured projective tests (e.g., Rorschach) than on structured objective tests of cognitive performance (e.g., Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale; WAIS). Using archival data, our study found evidence that adolescents with Identity Disorder tend to exhibit this same phenomenon. The records of 62 adolescent inpatients who had been administered the WAIS or WAIS-R and the Rorschach were examined. Of the 62 cases, 25 were

A patient with Klinefelter's syndrome and genotype 47 XXY was abused and ostracized by his family during childhood. Later, this pattern was repeated by a series of homosexual lovers. The separate and interactive effects between genetic and psychosocial risk factors may account for this patient's subsequent psychosexual and personality disorders and reminds scholars of psychopathology of the importance of early detection and intervention. This single case study is presented for heuristic value, illustrative purposes, and serves as a link between mental health clinicians and sexologists.

The analysis of a tic and a dream stimulated by the primal scene is described. The tic and the dream represent efforts exerted by the patient's hard-pressed developing ego to master the effects of overstimulation. Urethral and faecal incontinence, constipation, faecal impaction and finally enema administration, detail the assault upon his sphincters. Fantasy formation, a sleep disturbance, and a hypnoid state are other consequences related to this traumatic event. The importance of childhood conceptions of bodily functioning and the integration of these notions with the fantasies fostered duri

This article seeks to unify two subfields of psychology that have hitherto stood separately: evolutionary psychology and intelligence research/differential psychology. I suggest that general intelligence may simultaneously be an evolved adaptation and an individual-difference variable. Tooby and Cosmides's (1990a) notion of random quantitative variation on a monomorphic design allows us to incorporate heritable individual differences in evolved adaptations. The Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis, which is one consequence of the integration of evolutionary psychology and intelligence research, c

Following a discussion of panic states and their relationship to psychosomatic illness and related disorders, the author presents an extended clinical vignette in which he initially viewed the patient's intense anxiety as a manifestation of repressed conflict and, accordingly, used verbal interpretations as the principal mode of intervention. After this approach did not prove effective, the analyst began to make use of nonverbal interventions consistent with his emerging understanding of the patient's distress as a manifestation of the foreclosure (de M'Uzan 2003) and relegation to the body of
