Enzootic stability (herd immunity) in bovine babesiosis occurs when the rate of transmission (inoculation rate) of Babesia spp by the tick vector is sufficient to immunize a majority of susceptible calves before the loss of calfhood resistance. The effect of three tick (Boophilus microplus) control strategies (none, threshold, and strategic) on enzootic stability and the likelihood of babesiosis (Babesia bovis) outbreaks was studied using a spreadsheet age-class computer simulation model. The model was driven by weekly bovine tick counts from Brazil and Uruguay. The Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonosis causing significant economic losses in livestock, primarily through Bovine Genital Leptospirosis (BGL). While current vaccines prevent clinical disease, they typically fail to provide sterilizing immunity against adapted strains. This allows Leptospira to persist in the genitourinary tract, maintaining environmental shedding and zoonotic risk. Achieving sterilizing immunity remains a challenge, and this gap may be closely related to the immune response pattern of ruminants, where effective protection against chronic colonization requires, besides the humor

Zoonotic orthopoxvirus outbreaks have occurred repeatedly worldwide, including monkeypox in Africa and the United States, cowpox in Europe, camelpox in the Middle East and India, buffalopox in India, vaccinia in South America, and novel emerging orthopoxvirus infections in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. Waning smallpox immunity may increase the potential for animal-to-human transmission followed by further community transmission person-to-person (as demonstrated by monkeypox and buffalopox outbreaks) and by contact with fomites (as demonstrated by camelpox, cowpox, and, po

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the primary etiologic agent of swine enzootic pneumonia (EP), in which the immune response is reduced, making pigs susceptible to secondary infections. We surveyed commercial pig herds in Brazil for viral and bacterial respiratory coinfections that could complicate EP. Over a 2-y period (2015-2016), we found that 854 of 2,206 pigs (38.7%) were positive for M. hyopneumoniae in herds from various production systems in 3 Brazilian regions (Central-West, Southeast, South). We collected samples of 321 lungs positive for M. hyopneumoniae from 169 farms to also screen for

BACKGROUND: In several health economic analyses of rotavirus vaccines in Japan, all were not cost-effective from the healthcare payer perspective (HPP) but generally cost-effective from the societal perspective (SP). However, few studies have incorporated clinically significant factors of vaccine herd immunity, convulsions with gastroenteritis, encephalopathies, nosocomial infections, death, and intussusception as a vaccine side effect. A cost-utility analysis incorporating these were conducted.
METHODS: We used Bakir's decision-tree model and data in Japan with 94% coverage rate, 5-year time

Switzerland has not yet reached the measles vaccination coverage of 95 percent that is recommended by the World Health Organization to achieve herd immunity. Within the overall objective of informing effective ways to promote the combined Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccination in Switzerland, the aim of this study was to identify predictors of parents' intention to adhere to official MMR vaccination recommendations. Between October 2012 and January 2013, we surveyed 554 parents of middle school students aged 13 to 15 in Ticino, Switzerland. Guided by Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), the

Noroviruses are the principal cause of epidemic gastroenteritis worldwide. Multiple reports have concluded that the major capsid proteins of GII.4 strains, which cause 80% of norovirus infections worldwide, are evolving rapidly, resulting in new epidemic strains. Surrogate neutralization assays using sera from outbreaks and from immunized mice suggest that, as with influenza virus, antigenic variation maintains GII.4 persistence in the face of human population herd immunity. To test this hypothesis, mice were hyperimmunized with virus-like particles (VLPs) representing an early (GII.4-1987) an

In the UK, population virus or antibody testing using virus swabs, serum samples, blood spots or oral fluids has been performed to a limited extent for several diseases including measles, mumps, rubella and hepatitis and HIV. The collection of population-based infection and immunity data is key to the monitoring of disease prevalence and assessing the effectiveness of interventions such as behavioural modifications and vaccination. In particular, the biological properties of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its interaction with the human host have presented seve

Researchers determined the potential associations between exposure to airborne fine particulate matter (ie, particulate matter that is < 1 microm in diameter, or PM1.0) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and immune system function in beef cattle by using blood samples collected from yearling cattle in 22 herds in the spring of 2002. The herds were located at variable distances from industry field facilities in the major oil- and gas-producing areas of western Canada. The researchers evaluated immune system competence by measuring populations of B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocyte subtypes

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes acute diarrhea, dehydration in pigs, and high mortality rates in piglets <3 weeks of age. Maternal immunity protects piglets, but information on vaccination before or after natural infection in endemically exposed sow herds is limited. Currently, the recovery goal in sow units infected with PEDV is to become fully naive again or use natural virus infection to develop immune gilts through a feedback program before introduction into the sow herd. Since neutralizing antibodies in the gut are critical for protection against enteric viral infections suc

Q fever represents an important 'neglected zoonosis', with high prevalences recorded across the Middle East region. Among rural desert-dwelling communities in the region, camel milk is largely consumed raw, due to perceptions of dromedaries as a uniquely clean livestock species mentioned in the Qur'an and Islamic hadith, while milk from other livestock species is usually boiled. As a result, camels present a unique public health threat among such communities from milk-borne pathogens, including Coxiella burnetii. In view of this, a cross-sectional study was conducted among dromedary herds in s

The epidemiological pattern of Rift Valley fever (RVF) is marked by explosive epidemics followed by prolonged inter-epidemic periods (IEPs), during which the virus circulates at low levels without apparent outbreaks. This technical note proposes a conceptual framework comparing RVF maintenance during IEPs to Theileria parva endemic stability in cattle. Despite differences in pathogen and vector biology, both diseases display similar dynamics that sustain a balanced host-pathogen relationship. We identify three key features supporting this comparison: continuous low-level exposure through persi

Heterogeneity, defined as variation in individual-specific traits such as susceptibility or connectivity that are not subject to short-term change, can strongly influence epidemiological dynamics. In particular, it can reduce the effective reproduction number and the herd immunity threshold, thereby increasing the potential to control infectious disease outbreaks. However, heterogeneities at the epidemic level are extremely challenging to observe directly and difficult to estimate indirectly from epidemiological data. This study develops a methodology to estimate heterogeneities in COVID-19 tr

BACKGROUND: High kindergarten vaccination coverage is essential to sustain herd immunity against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. In recent years, rising state-level non-medical exemption rates and pandemic-related disruptions have threatened this protection in the United States.
METHODS: We analyzed 8 years of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) kindergarten vaccination surveillance data (2016-2017 through 2023-2024) to assess national and state-level trends in vaccination coverage and exemption rates. Descriptive analyses and scatterplots were used to examine pat

INTRODUCTION: Herd immunity against norovirus (NoV) is poorly understood in terms of its serological properties and vaccine designs. The precise neutralizing serological features of genotype I (GI) NoV have not been studied.
METHODS: To expand insights on vaccine design and herd immunity of NoVs, seroprevalence and seroincidence of NoV genotypes GI.2, GI.3, and GI.9 were determined using blockade antibodies based on a 5-year longitudinal serosurveillance among 449 residents in Jidong community.
RESULTS: Correlation between human histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) and GI NoV, and dynamic and

BACKGROUND: A severe dengue epidemic occurred in 2015 which resulted in over 22,000 laboratory-confirmed cases. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted during the ending phase of this epidemic to evaluate the true incidence of dengue virus (DENV) infection and the level of herd immunity.
METHODS: Adult residents in three administrative districts with high dengue incidence were recruited; workers in two districts with intermediate dengue incidence were also recruited for comparison. DENV-specific IgM and IgG were tested using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. DENV RNA

Orf virus (ORFV) is an epitheliotropic, double-stranded DNA pathogen belonging to the genus Parapoxvirus, and it is the causative agent of contagious ecthyma (CE) in small ruminants. It is an endemic disease on goat and sheep herds around the world. It is often a neglected disease, with impacts on herd health and productivity, while also being an occupational zoonosis. This review explores the causative agent of ovine ecthyma, its epidemiology, and clinical manifestations, with a particular emphasis on its interaction with the host's immune system and the development of ORFV vaccines. Measles is a highly transmissible viral disease that is preventable through vaccination. Despite global initiatives, outbreaks persist, demonstrating the need for high immunization coverage. Spread occurs via respiratory droplets and airborne particles, reinforcing the need for herd immunity. Symptoms include fever, cough, and a distinctive rash. Complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, and in rare cases, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Diagnosis relies on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serology tests. Two doses of th

We report the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in an unusually fulminant presentation of measles, presenting as severe necrotizing bronchiolitis with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in the absence of classical clinical features in an immunocompromised host on maintenance chemotherapy. Our patient had presented with features of a viral pneumonitis without the classical exanthem, in combination with HLH. Although rhinovirus-induced HLH was highly unusual, the positive rhinovirus swab result had distracted us from the eventual diagnosis. This calls for greater impetus to i

Elimination of measles and rubella in Europe is a feasible objective, but it requires achieving a maintaining a high prevalence of protected individuals in order to prevent cases and outbreaks from imported cases. The epidemiology of measles and rubella in Europe in the period 2003-2013 suggests that we are far away from the elimination target for measles, while the situation is better for rubella. In this situation, a new preventive strategy based on serological surveillance systems should be developed in Europe in order to identify and immunise individuals in population groups without suffic
