Piglets with maternally derived antibodies from sows immunized with rAdV-SFV-E2 were completely protected against lethal CSFV challenge.

Classical swine fever (CSF) is an economically important infectious disease of pigs caused by Classical swine fever virus (CSFV). To facilitate the eradication of CSF in endemic areas, a marker vaccine enabling differentiation of infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) is urgently needed. Previously, we have demonstrated that the DIVA vaccine rAdV-SFV-E2, an adenovirus-vectored Semliki Forest virus replicon expressing the E2 glycoprotein of CSFV, induces complete protection from lethal CSFV challenge. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maternally derived antibodies (MDAs) from so

[The influence of colostral antibodies on the postvaccination humoral immune response in neonatal calves].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of vaccination of young calves and to see whether maternal antibodies may influence the immunological response in calves. For this project 20 matched-pairs of cows and their offspring were selected. Of each pair, one cow received a placebo 8 and 4 weeks before term (group A) and the other was vaccinated against Feline Leucose Virus, FeLV, with Leucogen® (group B). All calves received colostrum from their respective mother shortly after birth and all calves were vaccinated with Leucogen® 10 days after birth. Blood samples from the cows and ca

Long-lasting immunity by early infection of maternal-antibody-protected infants.

Newborn higher vertebrates are largely immuno-incompetent and generally survive infections--including poxviruses--by maternal antibody protection. Here, we show that mice survived epidemics as adults only if exposed to lethal orthopoxvirus infections during infancy under the umbrella of maternal protective antibodies. This implies that both the absence of exposure to infection during early infancy or of effective vaccination renders the population highly susceptible to new or old re-emerging pathogens.

Congenital vulvar deformity in 6 alpacas.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 6 female alpacas, ranging in age from < 1 day to > 2 years, were examined because of primary owner complaints related to urogenital malformation. CLINICAL FINDINGS: In all instances, the vulva was totally to subtotally imperforate. One neonate had failure of passive transfer of immunity and mild azotemia at the time of initial examination. No additional urogenital malformations were detected in any of the alpacas. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Vulvoplasty performed via local anesthesia was successful in all alpacas. The neonate with failure of passive transfer received a plasma tr

Effect of maternal immunity on the immune response to oral vaccination against rabies in young foxes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine effect of maternal antibodies on immune response to oral vaccination against rabies in young foxes. ANIMALS: 250 cubs from 48 vixens. PROCEDURE: Sera were obtained from cubs of 36 vaccinated (maternally vaccinated [MV+]) and 12 nonvaccinated (MV-) vixens between 23 and 71 days of age and tested for neutralizing antibodies. Seventy-one MV+ cubs and 33 MV-cubs were vaccinated orally with modified-live virus vaccine SAD B19. Geometric mean titer (GMT) was determined in these cubs approximately 21, 39, and 57 days after vaccination. In a subsequent experiment, 10 vaccinat

Maternal influence on susceptibility of offspring to Brugia malayi infection in a murine model of filariasis.

We have used the severe combined immunodeficient C.B-17-scid/scid mouse to investigate the influences of maternal immune status and parasite burden on the susceptibility (or resistance) of offspring to infection with the human filarial parasite, Brugia malayi. C.B-17-scid/scid mice are permissive for infection while immunocompetent C.B-17(-)+/+ mice are uniformly resistant. Reciprocal matings of C.B-17-scid/scid and C.B-17(-)+/+ mice were performed. The C.B-17-scid/scid females were either naive or infected with Brugia malayi. The resulting immunocompetent C.B-17-scid/+ and C.B-17(-)+/scid pro

Immune responses in perinatal brain injury.

The perinatal period has often been described as immune deficient. However, it has become clear that immune responses in the neonate following exposure to microbes or as a result of tissue injury may be substantial and play a role in perinatal brain injury. In this article we will review the immune cell composition under normal physiological conditions in the perinatal period, both in the human and rodent. We will summarize evidence of the inflammatory responses to stimuli and discuss how neonatal immune activation, both in the central nervous system and in the periphery, may contribute to per

Comparison of diagnostic tests for determining the prevalence of failure of passive transfer in New Zealand dairy calves.

AIM: To evaluate the level of agreement of three indirect testing methods with concentrations of IgG in serum, and to determine their test characteristics for diagnosing failure of passive transfer (FPT), in dairy calves in New Zealand. METHODS: From 17 July to 30 November 2015, 471 blood samples were collected from dairy calves aged 0-8 days, from 19 different commercial dairy farms in the Waikato region of New Zealand. All serum samples were tested for concentrations of IgG and total protein (TP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity, and 138 samples were tested using a digital Bri

Impact of queen infection on kitten susceptibility to different strains of Bartonella henselae.

Domestic cats are the natural reservoir of Bartonella henselae, the agent of cat scratch disease in humans. In kittens, maternal IgG antibodies are detectable within two weeks postpartum, weaning in six to ten weeks postpartum and kittens as young as six to eight weeks old can become bacteremic in a natural environment. The study's objective was to evaluate if maternal antibodies against a specific B. henselae strain protect kittens from infection with the same strain or a different strain from the same genotype. Three seronegative and Bartonella-free pregnant queens were infected with the sam

Maternal immunization as a strategy to decrease susceptibility to infection in newborn infants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Following on from the success of maternal tetanus vaccination, recent research has shown that other vaccines given in pregnancy can protect against vaccine-preventable infections in early infancy. This review will outline these recent developments and highlight the impact on current clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: Maternal immunization provides protection to the newborn through the transfer of vaccine-induced IgG across the placenta, a process that is affected by multiple variables. The safety of newly recommended maternal vaccines has been further tested in recent stud

Dynamics and longevity of maternally-acquired antibodies to Taenia solium in piglets born to naturally infected sows.

This study was designed to investigate the longevity of maternally-acquired specific antibody (Ab) isotypes in piglets born to sows with Taenia solium cysticercosis. Four isotypes of anti-cysticercal immunoglobulins (IgG(total), IgG1, IgG2 and IgA), were assessed in sows naturally infected with T. solium (n=5) and their piglets (5/sow). Specific IgG2 and IgA responses were not detected in piglets at any sampling point. However, IgG(total) and IgG1 responses were detectable in sera from piglets from day 0 but not at 2months of age. Antibody profiles differed significantly over time between litt

Passive immunity of progeny from broiler breeders vaccinated with oil-emulsion bacterin against Salmonella enteritidis.

Young poultry are very susceptible to Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) infections because of the absence of complete intestinal flora colonization and an immature immune system. This study evaluated the role of passive immunity on the resistance of young birds against early infections caused by SE. The progeny of broiler breeders vaccinated with an oil-emulsion bacterin was compared to the progeny of unvaccinated birds. Efficacy was determined by challenging birds at 1 and 14 days of age with SE Nal Spc strain, phage type 4. After challenge at 1 day of age, the progeny of vaccinated birds presented

Neonatal lupus syndrome: the heart as a target of the immune system.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is an auto-immune disease related to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Unlike SLE it is not a spontaneous syndrome but rather an acquired one. In NLE the most common disease manifestations are a transient cutaneous lesion and cardiac conduction disturbances. The cutaneous lesions and other non-cardiac manifestations of NLE are transient and disappear about six months after birth, at the time when maternal antibodies disappear from the neonatal circulation. This fact suggests that maternal antibodies may cross the placenta leading to an inflammatory reaction

Llama medicine. Obstetrics, neonatal care, and congenital conditions.

Obstetrical care of the llama is very similar to other food animal and equine obstetrics. Understanding the few unique llama characteristics such as birthing from a standing position, no licking of the neonate by the mother, and the epidermal membrane covering the newborn, help give confidence when treating llamas. Dystocia is rare in the llama but when veterinary assistance is required, understanding the shape of the female pelvis aids in manipulations. Llama neonatal care is minimal for the healthy cria, but intensive care of a compromised cria is extremely demanding, and not always rewardin

[Post-transfusion cytomegalovirus infection in newborn infants].

Post-transfusional cytomegalovirus infection (P.T.C.M.V.) represents a minor part (perhaps about 0.2%) when compared with C.M.V. infections or maternal origin (congenital 0.2-0.5% - post-natal first year 20%). However P.T.C.M.V. infections are associated with higher morbidity and mortality because: These infections develop in infants born from uninfected mothers (C.M.V. sero-negative mothers). These newborns have no passively acquired antibodies from maternal origin which probably prevent or limit the spreading of P.T.C.M.V. infection in infants born from C.M.V. seropositive mothers.
