Many Americans, especially emergency department (ED) patients, are not up to date with routine cancer screenings. This multi-center retrospective study assessed adherence to U.S. Preventive services task force guidelines for breast, colorectal, and lung cancer screenings among 198,210 patients across 11 Indiana EDs. Results showed 33.0% were screened for colorectal cancer, 55.4% of eligible females for breast cancer, and only 3.1% of eligible patients for lung cancer. COVID-19 highlights preexisting inequities that affect health outcomes and access to care for Black and Brown Americans. The Marion County Public Health Department in Indiana sought to address inequities in COVID-19 testing by using surveillance data to place community testing sites in areas with the highest incidence of disease. A tongue biopsy technique developed for the detection of Trichinella spiralis infection in swine involves taking a deep core biopsy of the tongue musculature, and examination of the sample by digestion. Using this procedure, 31 of 52 (60%) swine from an Indiana herd were found to be infected with T. spiralis. The average biopsy weighed 0.42 g, and the intensity of infection averaged 180 larvae per gram (range 2-1157). Rectal stricture occurred in each of 23 pigs submitted for necropsy from eight Indiana farms. Each stricture was an annular cicatrization of the rectal wall, 2.0-5.0 cm anterior to the anorectal junction. Emaciation, colonic dilatation and compression atrophy of abdominal and thoracic viscera were a result of chronic obstipation and inanition. Anaplasma ovis infection is known to occur in elk experimentally, but without clinical signs or significant clinicopathologic changes. An elk farm in southern Indiana experienced the death of 3 neonates. Gross findings suggested hemolytic anemia as the cause of death.
