Individualized ACTH treatment of the West syndrome (WS) was assessed in a prospective multicenter study, in which each patient's dosage was increased stepwise according to response. Our series included six patients with cryptogenic and 24 with symptomatic infantile spasms. During the treatment period the total ACTH dose ranged from 58 to 373 i.u./kg. Patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have a high prevalence of UV radiation-responsive skin diseases including psoriasis, pruritus, eosinophilic folliculitis and eczemas. On the other hand, UV has been shown to suppress T cell-mediated immune responses and to induce activation and replication of HIV. These developments have prompted clinicians and investigators to question whether phototherapy is safe for HIV-infected individuals. We have reviewed these issues and hereby provide a summary and critique of relevant laboratory and clinical evidence.

Because some cases of hearing loss demand urgent attention, an approach to patients with hearing loss should be adopted in the primary care setting that allows for systematic institution of an individualized and appropriate treatment plan. Workup is enhanced by categorizing the hearing loss as acute or chronic and conductive or sensorineural. The central executive component (CE) of Baddeley's working memory model (Baddeley, 1992) was evaluated in 26 asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals (HIV+) and 23 HIV-control subjects using a dual-task working memory paradigm. We studied the effect occurring in close proximity before the phonation start and give an account of the microdramas taking place upon the glottis immediately before the phonation start in a group of individuals suffering from balbuties (60 children and adolescents from 9 to 14 years of age) and an equally large control group suffering from no such speech defect. In the group of children and adolescents with balbuties only less than 4% of the cases showed undisturbed regular phonation starts, whereas in the control group it was almost as much as 90%.

Students with autism present a challenge to the SLP not only because of the severity of their communication disorders, but also because of the great variety of learning styles and social skills. Collaboration- and consultation-based service delivery systems offer an alternative to traditional therapy for these students. Forty six subjects infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were followed up, for recording psychiatric morbidity if any, before and after the information regarding their HIV status was revealed to them.
