The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of tea saponins on oxidative stress induced by cyclophosphamide in chickens. One hundred twenty chickens were randomly divided into 5 groups. Groups 3 to 4 received intramuscular injection of cyclophosphamide to induce oxidative stress and immunosuppression. After that, groups 2 and 4 were orally administered tea saponins in drinking water for 7 d. Then, groups 1 to 4 were immunized with a live, bivalent vaccine of Newcastle disease virus and infectious bronchitis virus. Blood samples were collected for analysis of oxidative parameters and

This study was conducted on 100 one-day-old broiler chicks to evaluate the effect of Poulvac E. coli vaccine in reduction of clinical signs and complications after concurrent infectious bronchitis virus (variant 02) and virulent E. coli O78 challenges. The birds were evaluated for clinical signs, mortality for 7 days post-infection, PM lesion score, average body weight and serological evaluation. Re-isolation and RT-PCR for the challenging infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) variant 02 were conducted thereafter. The results showed that the Poulvac E. coli at one-day old chicks in the presence of

Despite continuous and extensive efforts to control infectious bronchitis (IB) throughout the century, the disease continues to be one of the most economically relevant diseases affecting the poultry production worldwide. Since the early 1990s, numerous scientists have explicitly warned about the role of attenuated vaccines on IB virus (IBV) evolution and the detrimental consequences of their use to the poultry industry. Herein, we review evidence indicating that the use of live vaccines increases genetic/phenotypic diversity of IBV, enhances their fitness in the environment, and ultimately ag

Infectious bronchitis (IB) is an acute disease of chickens caused by a gammacoronavirus, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Infection of the nasal and tracheal mucosa causes a rapid loss of ciliated epithelium and impaired mucociliary clearance that predispose chickens to secondary bacterial infections. In poultry production, disease progression and severity are influenced by other live virus vaccines, immunosuppression, and coexisting pathogens. The digestive tract supports viral replication in the proventriculus, intestines, cloaca, and the bursa of Fabricius. Acute enteritis and stunted gro

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB) causes great economic losses to the chicken industry worldwide. IB virus (IBV) exhibits extensive variability, and differing serotypes are often prevalent in different countries or regions. Therefore, the identification of local circulating strains is essential for the selection of appropriate vaccines. China is a worldwide leader in poultry meat and egg production, and IBV is one of the most important infectious diseases affecting this industry. In this review, the history and current IB occurrence in China, as well as the development and use of vaccines, are

Since 1999, QX-like (GI-19) avian infectious bronchitis viruses have been the predominant strains in China till now. Vaccination is the most effective way to control the disease, while live attenuated vaccine is widely used. In the current research, we evaluated the effect of several monovalent and bivalent live IBV vaccines in young chickens against the QX-like (GI-19) IBV infection. The results showed that monovalent 4/91 and bivalent Ma5+LDT3 vaccines could provide efficient protection in day-old chickens that reduced morbidity and mortality, ameliorated histopathology lesions, and reduced

The spike glycoprotein (S) of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) comprises two subunits, S1 and S2. We have previously demonstrated that the S2 subunit of the avirulent Beau-R strain is responsible for its extended cellular tropism for Vero cells. Two recombinant infectious bronchitis viruses (rIBVs) have been generated; the immunogenic S1 subunit is derived from the IBV vaccine strain, H120, or the virulent field strain, QX, within the genetic background of Beau-R. The rIBVs BeauR-H120(S1) and BeauR-QX(S1) are capable of replicating in primary chicken kidney cell cultures and in Vero cells. Th

Twelve isolations of Newcastle disease virus were made from 77 clinical samples from chickens from conjunctivitis, respiratory disease, proventriculitis and bursal atrophy. Nine of the isolations were made from chickens with conjunctivitis. The viruses were identified as Newcastle disease virus by inhibition of their haemagglutinins with specific antiserum to Newcastle disease virus. The viruses failed to kill chicken embryos after inoculation into the allantoic cavity and they were judged to be lentogenic strains. There was no evidence that the Newcastle disease viruses were responsible for a

Avian infectious bronchitis (IB), a highly contagious disease hazardous to the poultry industry, is caused by an etiological agent called the infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Some IBV strains (IBVs) alone usually do not cause high mortality in field conditions if not with secondary pathogens including Escherichia coli (E. coli). Herein, we established an IBV and E. coli co-infection model to evaluate the protective efficacy of two IBV vaccine strains against a new emerging genotype GVI-1 with mild virulence in experimental conditions. Chickens were inoculated with IBV field isolate ZQX (geno

Two-day-old commercial chicks were inoculated orally with 2 x 10(6) oocysts of Cryptosporidium baileyi and vaccinated with 10(3.5) EID50/head of a commercially available avian infectious bronchitis (IB) live virus vaccine at 4 and 14 days following inoculation. Chicks infected with C. baileyi were shown to have an immunosuppressive effect on IB virus. It is concluded that infection with the protozoon in early life may increase their susceptibility to IB.

OBJECTIVE: Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a highly contagious viral disease of chickens with global distribution and considerable economic impact. Due to the limited cross-protectivity between certain virus variants, vaccination programs routinely used today require regular evaluation and adaptation. The objective of this study was to describe the incidence and distribution of infectious bronchitis in western Germany and neighbouring regions based on a retrospective evaluation of diagnostic data obtained from flock health monitoring.

Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) is an infectious pathogen causing economic loss to the poultry industry worldwide. Nationwide surveillance was performed to determine the prevalence and distribution of FAdV with 725 samples collected from145 broiler farms in South Korea. A total of 64 strains were identified using PCR and phylogenetic analysis based on a sequence of hexon gene; 23 of the 64 were FAdV-11/D, 19 were FAdV-5/B, and 12 were FAdV-8b/E. FAdV-1/A and FAdV-8a/E were three strains, respectively; only one strain of FAdV-2/D was detected, and there was no FAdV-4/C. FAdV was detected very frequently

In August 2025, Mozambique's Central Veterinary Laboratory, part of the Agricultural Research Institute, received broiler chicken carcasses for investigation after reports of elevated flock mortality. Pooled samples from the carcasses (i.e. trachea and lung) tested positive for influenza A. Subsequent subtyping ruled out hemagglutinin subtypes H5 and H7. Further analysis including tests for Newcastle disease virus, infectious bronchitis virus, infectious laryngotracheitis, and avian influenza subtype H9 confirmed the presence of H9. Whole-genome sequencing using Nanopore technology identified

Infectious Bronchitis (IB) is an economically important avian disease that considerably threatens the global poultry industry. This is partly, as a result of its negative consequences on egg production, weight gain as well as mortality rate. The disease is caused by a constantly evolving avian infectious bronchitis virus whose isolates are classified into several serotypes and genotypes that demonstrate little or no cross protection. In order to curb the menace of the disease therefore, broad based vaccines are urgently needed. The aim of this study was to develop a recombinant DNA vaccine cand

Coronavirus encodes an extensively phosphorylated and highly basic nucleocapsid (N) protein. Previous studies have identified Ser190, Ser192, Thr378 and Ser379 as the phosphorylation sites for coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) N protein. In this study, we show that phosphorylation at Thr378 and Ser379 sites is dependent on the ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) and Rad3-related (ATR), a kinase activated during IBV replication. Introduction of Ala substitutions at these two sites individually, in combination of the two and together with other two sites (Ser190 and Ser192) into an i

Respiratory syndromes (RS) include a variety of diseases that lead to respiratory dysfunction, resulting in significant economic losses for the poultry industry. Infectious agents and unfavourable environmental factors cause these respiratory diseases, and rapid transmission, high morbidity rates, and frequent mixed infections characterise them. The challenge in preventing and treating these diseases arises from the complexity of their triggers and the potential for secondary infections. Current vaccines often do not provide effective prevention, and the overuse of certain medications can lead

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV), duck hepatitis virus (DHV), Muscovy duck reovirus (MDRV), and Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) represent four emergent infectious diseases impacting waterfowl, which can be challenging to differentiate due to overlapping clinical signs. In response to this, we have developed a one-step multiplex real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assay, capable of simultaneously detecting DTMUV, DHV, MDRV, and MDPV. This method exhibits high specificity, avoiding cross-reactivity with other viruses such as Fowl adenoviruses (FADV), infectious bursa

Between November 2017 and February 2018, Ghanaian poultry producers reported to animal health authorities a dramatic increase in mortality rate and a relevant drop in egg production in several layer hen farms. Laboratory investigations revealed that the farms had been infected by the H9N2 influenza subtype. Virological and molecular characterization of the viruses identified in Ghana is described here for the first time. Whole genome analysis showed that the viruses belong to the G1-lineage and cluster with viruses identified in North and West Africa. The low pathogenicity of the virus was con

Six- to eight-week-old gnotobiotic F344/N rats were inoculated intranasally with 10(5.0) colony-forming units of Mycoplasma pulmonis or were sham inoculated, then one week later were given 10(0.2) 50% tissue culture infective doses of Sendai virus or sterile medium. Groups of rats were killed immediately after virus inoculation and three, five, ten, and 20 days later. Lesions in nasal passages, middle ears, larynxes, tracheas, and lungs from half of the rats in each group were subjectively scored. Organs from the other rats were quantitatively cultured for M. pulmonis and for Sendai virus. Rat
