Comparative study between target-controlled-infusion and continuous-infusion anesthesia in dogs treated with methotrimeprazine and treated with propofol and remifentanil.

PURPOSE: To compare two propofol infusion techniques in bitches subjected to ovary histerectomy by estimating the efficiency of the propofol target-dose, evaluating the cardiorespiratory and hemogasimetric attributes, and the bispectral scale index (BIS) as well as the recovery period characteristics. METHODS: Twenty anesthetized bitches were divided into two groups of 10 each (G1, G2). Animals of G1 were pre-treated with methotrimeprazine and anesthetized with target-controlled propofol infusion by means of a Harvard infusion pump combined to remifentanil through a syringe pump. RESULTS: Br

Continuous subcutaneous rhPTH infusion for managing difficult chronic hypoparathyroidism. A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Standard treatment for chronic hypoparathyroidism is represented by long-life per os supplementation of calcium and vitamin D. Since 90s, exogenous PTH is also available, but a not negligible number of patients experience a poor control. Starting from the experience with pumps in diabetes, it has been hypothesized that the infusion of PTH through pump might result in a better disease control. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the published data about continuous subcutaneous PTH infusion in chronic hypoPTH patients and achieve conclusions for clinical practice. METHODS

Associations between insulin pump self-management and HbA1c in type 1 diabetes.

AIMS: Insulin pump self-management is important for glycaemic outcomes. We aimed to investigate associations between self-management factors and HbA1c. METHODS: Adult insulin pump users with type 1 diabetes (n = 770) completed an online questionnaire. The latest HbA1c and demographics were extracted from national registries. Associations between HbA1c and self-management (use of advanced features, timing of infusion set change, timing of meal bolus, data-upload and pump settings adjustments) were investigated using backward selected linear regression models. RESULTS: Of the 699 responders el

Continuous interscalene brachial plexus block for postoperative pain control at home: a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study.

UNLABELLED: In this study, we investigated the efficacy of patient-controlled regional analgesia for outpatients undergoing moderately painful orthopedic surgery of the shoulder. Preoperatively, patients (n = 20) received an interscalene nerve block and perineural catheter. Postoperatively, patients were discharged home with both oral opioids and a portable infusion pump delivering either 0.2% ropivacaine or 0.9% saline, determined randomly in a double-blinded manner. Daily end points included pain scores, opioid use and side effects, sleep quality, and technique complications. Ropivacaine (n

Convulsion during intra-arterial infusion of fasudil hydrochloride for the treatment of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The incidence of convulsion and associated factors were retrospectively analyzed in 23 patients with symptomatic cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) who underwent a total of 31 intra-arterial infusion of fasudil hydrochloride (IAFH) procedures in 49 vessels. Fasudil hydrochloride was administered by superselective infusion via a microcatheter positioned at the proximal portion of the affected artery. Thirteen procedures were performed by manually controlled infusion of 30-75 mg fasudil hydrochloride (1.2-3.75 mg/ml) for approximately 10 minutes. Eighteen procedures were

Insulin pump risks and benefits: a clinical appraisal of pump safety standards, adverse event reporting, and research needs: a joint statement of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Technology Working Group.

Insulin pump therapy, also known as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), is an important and evolving form of insulin delivery, which is mainly used for people with type 1 diabetes. However, even with modern insulin pumps, errors of insulin infusion can occur due to pump failure, insulin infusion set (IIS) blockage, infusion site problems, insulin stability issues, user error, or a combination of these. Users are therefore exposed to significant and potentially fatal hazards: interruption of insulin infusion can result in hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis; conversely, delivery of exce

Administration of Subcutaneous Furosemide in Elastomeric Pump vs. Oral Solution for the Treatment of Diuretic Refractory Congestion.

INTRODUCTION: The most common symptom in heart failure (HF) is congestion, which can be refractory to diuretic treatment. AIM: To verify whether, in patients with advanced HF and diuretic resistance, subcutaneous furosemide or furosemide in an oral solution can improve the clinical-analytical status. METHODS: From 2018 to 2020, 27 consecutive outpatients with diuretic resistance, not candidates for other alternatives, were recruited. Patients were treated either with subcutaneous furosemide in elastomeric pump (n: 10) or with oral solution (n: 17) for 5 days. RESULTS: The functional status

Stability of Two Reserve Antibiotics in Elastomeric Pumps: Ceftazidime-Avibactam and Ceftolozane-Tazobactam.

Background/Objectives: Parenteral antibiotic therapy is indispensable in the treatment of several infections. The parenteral administration often leads to the need for prolonged hospitalization. Therefore, interest in outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is growing. OPAT is typically administered in elastomeric devices, which release an infusion solution over a 24 h period and are meanwhile worn close to the body. This work aimed to evaluate the stability of the reserve antibiotics ceftazidime-avibactam and ceftolozane-tazobactam for OPAT use. Methods: Elastomeric pumps were prep

Aberrant Purkinje cell activity is the cause of dystonia in a shRNA-based mouse model of Rapid Onset Dystonia-Parkinsonism.

Loss-of-function mutations in the α3 isoform of the sodium pump are responsible for Rapid Onset Dystonia-Parkinsonism (RDP). A pharmacologic model of RDP replicates the most salient features of RDP, and implicates both the cerebellum and basal ganglia in the disorder; dystonia is associated with aberrant cerebellar output, and the parkinsonism-like features are attributable to the basal ganglia. The pharmacologic agent used to generate the model, ouabain, is selective for sodium pumps. However, close to the infusion sites in vivo it likely affects all sodium pump isoforms. Therefore, it remain

Design research on a smart infusion device to reduce medical workload and enhance patient safety.

In traditional infusion processes, issues such as untimely medication replacement and patients' difficulty in continuously monitoring their medication levels are prevalent. This study presents the design of a smart infusion automatic medication replacement device aimed at automating infusion management through three key modules: high-precision liquid level monitoring, automated medication replacement, and a smart control system. By monitoring liquid levels in real time, the system eliminates the need for patients to constantly check their medication levels, accurately controlling the amount of

Pneumatic power supply for intravenous infusions.

The pneumatic power supply (PPS) has been used as the driving device for the pneumatic blood pump during the resuscitation of more than 15 hypovolemic patients. The device has been found to be safe and easy to use. By virtue of its semiautomatic function, members of the resuscitation team are free to perform other duties. Previously, these individuals would have been required to maintain an adequate driving pressure in the infusion pumps.

Characterization of peristaltic pumps and application to fill & finish operations: Part I.

Peristaltic pumps are widely used in fill and finish operations for parenteral drugs, especially biologics. These pumps are believed to work as volumetric pumps and to deliver a constant flow rate. However, this is only true within a limited range of backpressure. In this article, we show that if the backpressure exceeds a certain threshold, which depends on the pump tuning, the flow decreases progressively until it completely vanishes at a certain backpressure. We demonstrate that this behavior may have practical consequences on the various operations, including the filtration of biologic sol

Ziconotide-induced psychosis: a case report.

Ziconotide is used intrathecally in the management of severe chronic pain that contains a warning against neuropsychiatric adverse events. The definition of psychiatric events is broad and management strategies are vague. This case report describes a 49-year-old female who was admitted to the acute psychiatric unit to address auditory hallucinations and paranoid ideation persisting for 3 weeks. Approximately 3 months ago, an intrathecal pump with ziconotide was implanted to treat pain. Upon hospital admission, the pump was infusing at a rate of 4.9 mcg/24 hours. Because the drug could not be i
