"After a long day of play, I get tired and forget to unfurl my bed net": a qualitative study exploring factors affecting insecticide-treated bed net use among school-aged children in eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread access to long-lasting insecticidal nets, infection with malaria parasites remains prevalent among African school-aged children. Though this group contributes significantly to malaria transmission, few studies have explored why their bed net use is inconsistent especially from the perspective of the children themselves. This qualitative study sought to understand the behavioral and contextual factors influencing bed net use among school-aged children in Eastern Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted among children aged 8-17 years from

Associating the scale-up of insecticide-treated nets and use with the decline in all-cause child mortality in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2005 to 2014.

BACKGROUND: To reduce the malaria burden and improve the socioeconomic status of its citizens, the Democratic Republic of Congo scaled up key malaria control interventions, especially insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), between 2005 and 2014. Since then, the effects of these interventions on malaria mortality and morbidity have not been assessed. This study aimed to measure the impact of the National Malaria Control Programme's efforts and to inform future control strategies. METHODS: The authors used data from the Demographic and Health Surveys 2007 and 2013-2014 to assess trends in all-cause c

Reductions in malaria in pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes following indoor residual spraying of insecticide in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying of insecticide (IRS) is a key intervention for reducing the burden of malaria in Africa. However, data on the impact of IRS on malaria in pregnancy and birth outcomes is limited. METHODS: An observational study was conducted within a trial of intermittent preventive therapy during pregnancy in Tororo, Uganda. Women were enrolled at 12-20 weeks of gestation between June and October 2014, provided with insecticide-treated bed nets, and followed through delivery. From December 2014 to February 2015, carbamate-containing IRS was implemented in Tororo district

Frequent blood feeding enables insecticide-treated nets to reduce transmission by mosquitoes that bite predominately outdoors.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of vector control on malaria transmission by long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) depends on the vectors entering houses to blood feed and rest when people are inside houses. In the Solomon Islands, significant reductions in malaria have been achieved in the past 20 years with insecticide-treated bed nets, IRS, improved diagnosis and treatment with artemisinin combination therapies; despite the preference of the primary vector, Anopheles farauti, to feed outdoors and early in the evening and thereby avoid potential exposure to

Potential for reduction of burden and local elimination of malaria by reducing Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission: a mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid declines in malaria prevalence, cases, and deaths have been achieved globally during the past 15 years because of improved access to first-line treatment and vector control. We aimed to assess the intervention coverage needed to achieve further gains over the next 15 years. METHODS: We used a mathematical model of the transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria to explore the potential effect on case incidence and malaria mortality rates from 2015 to 2030 of five different intervention scenarios: remaining at the intervention coverage levels of 2011-13 (Sustain), for which

Inequity in the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets before and after nationwide mass distribution campaign in 48 districts of Uganda: VERSE toolkit analysis.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) form a physical and chemical barrier against mosquitoes and have been shown to reduce malaria burden and mortality. Many countries, Uganda inclusive have distributed LLINs free of charge, drastically increasing LLIN ownership. However, ownership does not directly translate in to LLIN use. METHODS: Data from serial cross-sectional surveys were obtained from LLIN Evaluation in Uganda Project (LLINEUP); a cluster-randomized trial conducted in eastern and western Uganda. We apply the Vaccine Economics Research for Sustainability and Equity (VERSE

Net ownership, utilization and malaria burden in the context of Piperonyl butoxide-LLINs intervention in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid-treated nets have reduced malaria in endemic areas, but insecticide resistance has hindered progress, prompting WHO to recommend piperonyl butoxide (PBO) based long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Kenya adopted PBO nets, but their usage is not well documented. This study aims to assess the uptake and effect of PBO nets versus pyrethroid-only LLINs (pyrethroid-LLINs) on malaria transmission in Western Kenya. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County, one year after net distribution between November and December 2023. Twelve v

A cohort study to identify risk factors for Plasmodium falciparum infection in Burkinabe children: implications for other high burden high impact countries.

BACKGROUND: Progress in controlling malaria has stalled in recent years. Today the malaria burden is increasingly concentrated in a few countries, including Burkina Faso, where malaria is not declining. A cohort study was conducted to identify risk factors for malaria infection in children in southwest Burkina Faso, an area with high insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage and insecticide-resistant vectors. METHODS: Incidence of Plasmodium falciparum infection was measured in 252 children aged 5 to 15 years, using active and passive detection, during the 2017 transmission season, following cle

Risk factors for malaria infection among rubber tappers living in a malaria control program area in southern Thailand.

Rubber tappers work begins at midnight during the feeding time of Anopheles maculatus and An. minimus, two common malaria vectors in southern Thailand. We studied the association between rubber tapper behavior and malaria infections as reported to the Notified Disease Surveillance System during 2010 in Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. In that province insecticide treated bednets are distributed free to the population and insecticide residual spraying is performed annually. A random sample of 394 rubber tapper households was interviewed from October 2010 to May 2011. Twenty-six household

Human antibody response to Anopheles gambiae saliva: an immuno-epidemiological biomarker to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets in malaria vector control.

For the fight against malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for indicators to evaluate the efficacy of vector-control strategies. This study investigates a potential immunological marker, based on human antibody responses to Anopheles saliva, as a new indicator to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Parasitological, entomological, and immunological assessments were carried out in children and adults from a malaria-endemic region of Angola before and after the introduction of ITNs. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to An. gambiae saliva were posi

Mathematical modelling and analysis of the adaptive dynamics in mosquito populations: uniform persistence of malaria infection.

In this work, we present a mathematical model for the spread of malaria, incorporating key factors such as human populations, mosquito behavior, and the mosquitoes' plasticity and adaptation to control measures like widespread insecticide-treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying. Through analysis of the model, we identify and describe the convergence and persistence properties of the solutions, leveraging a small parameter that represents the interactions between mosquitoes in relation to their activity patterns. In our analysis, we extend some ideas from the theory of uniform persis

Between-and within-socioeconomic groups temporal inequality in the uptake of malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women and under-five children in Ghana (2003-2022).

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among pregnant women and children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite over two decades of efforts including insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), universal and equitable coverage has not been achieved. In Ghana, coverage disparities persist, particularly along socioeconomic and geographic lines. This study investigates temporal trends and decomposes both within-group and between-group socioeconomic inequalities in ITN use and IPTp coverage among children
