We treated 35 patients affected with essential thrombocythemia (ET) with interferon (IFN) alpha-2b. Our treatment scheme consisted of (a) a 6-month induction phase and (b) a continuous maintenance phase. During the induction phase, our results showed that using 21 million units (mu) of IFN weekly platelet counts fell below 600 x 10(9)/1 in about 90% of patients. These data demonstrate that well-tolerated doses of IFN can rapidly correct excessive thrombocytosis. Only a few cases of sarcoidosis-like reaction to a pharmacologic compound have been reported in patients with melanoma in the literature. Long-term treatment with interferon alpha may be assumed. We report a case of a 25-y-old man who presented to our department with diffuse interstitial pulmonary infiltrates and slightly enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes as determined by computed tomography. He had a history of malignant melanoma with 18 months of interferon alpha-2 therapy. Histological analysis of a transbronchial biopsy revealed sarcoidosis-like reactions.

Among 45 patients with chronic hepatitis C the efficiency of interferon alpha 2b treatment was evaluated. The efficiency of interferon therapy was determined after 6 months of treatment in the group of 28 patients (group I) treated for 6 months and 17 patients (group II) treated for 12 months. The side effects were investigated with respect to such a factor as time of treatment. 11 (39%) patients from group I had eliminated HCV RNA and 14 (50%) patients had normalized AlAT levels in the serum. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of interferon-alpha2B on mumps orchitis, often caused by postpubertal mumps and which can result in permanent testicular atrophy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 21 patients with mumps orchitis, treated between May 1990 and June 1997. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups: in group 1, 13 patients received therapy with interferon-alpha2B (3 x 10(6) IU per day) and group 2 did not, acting as controls. Fifteen patients (mean age 24, range 19-46) referred for refractory vulvar warts were treated with subcutaneous interferon alpha-2a, 3 million units 3 times a week for 3 weeks.
