A transactional model of sleep-wake regulation in infants born preterm or low birthweight.

OBJECTIVE: To test a transactional model of sleep-wake development in infants born preterm or low birthweight (PT LBW), which may inform clinical practice, interventions, and future research in this at risk population. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-eight mother-infant dyads participated from hospital discharge to 4 months postterm. Assessments of prematurity, infant sleep-wake patterns, maternal interaction quality, depression, feeding route, and sociodemographic factors were conducted. RESULTS: Path analyses revealed that maternal interactions directly related to infant sleep patterns and

Precarious employment conditions affect work content in education and social work: results of work analyses.

Work content is adversely affected by precarious employment conditions, with consequences for workers and clients/customers. Three examples are taken from professions involving long-term relations between workers and clients. Adult education teachers hired on short-term contracts to teach primarily immigrant populations prepare their courses under less favorable conditions than regular teachers and their employment context foments hostility among teachers. Special education technicians are hired on a seasonal basis which interferes with their ability to coordinate and plan their efforts in col

Classroom behavior and family climate in students with learning disabilities and hyperactive behavior.

The present study aimed to identify subtypes of the learning disabilities (LD) syndrome by examining classroom behavior and family climate among four groups of Israeli students ranging in age from 7 to 10 years: 22 students with LD and hyperactive behavior (HB), 22 nonhyperactive students with LD, 20 nondisabled students with HB, and 20 nondisabled nonhyperactive students. Schaefer's Classroom Behavior Inventory and Moos's Family Environmental Scale were administered to teachers and mothers, respectively. The results revealed that higher distractibility and hostility among both groups with HB

Psychological assessment of psychopathology in opiate addicts.

A sample of 99 opiate addicts seeking treatment were assessed on three well established clinical assessment procedures; the Loevinger Sentence Completion, the Bellak Ego Functions Interview, and the Rorschach. Their scores were compared using normal and clinical reference groups. On all three procedures, opiate addicts had a significantly greater impairment than normals but significantly less thought disorder and impairments in ego functions than hospitalized borderline and psychotic patients. The results indicate that a primary disturbance in opiate addicts appears to be their relative inabil

From dyadic coping to emotional sharing and multimodal interpersonal synchrony: Protocol for a laboratory experiment.

During interpersonal emotion regulation, relationship partners mutually regulate each other's emotional states. Interpersonal emotion regulation occurs at three main timescales: phasic (from several hundred milliseconds to about 10s), tonic (from 10s to 1 hour), and chronic (from weeks to months and years). Prior research has examined interpersonal emotion regulation at only one or two timescales simultaneously. The proposed research will examine variables relating to interpersonal emotion regulation in close relationships across all three timescales. A total of 150 romantic couples will engag

Measuring interpersonal problems in people with mental retardation.

Despite interpersonal problems being commonplace in the clinical presentations of people with mental retardation, previous efforts to index interpersonal difficulties have tended to unsatisfactorily rely on external ratings. The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-32 is a psychometrically robust self-report measure of interpersonal problems in adult populations. We found that this instrument retained many of its psychometric properties when used with a sample of 255 respondents with mild mental retardation. Results indicate four usable subscales alongside the full-scale when employed with this

The interpersonal circle and the interpersonal octagon: a confluence of ideas.

UNLABELLED: This paper compares and contrasts the underlying principles of two conceptual systems-the interpersonal circle and the interpersonal octagon-for classifying and measuring a person's interpersonal tendencies. Both systems have been represented by two intersecting axes: a horizontal one extending from close/warm involvement to distant/cold separation and a vertical one extending from upper/control to lower/submission. In both systems, intermediate axes have been inserted between these two main ones. Where the circle would appear to be concerned with traits, the octagon is concerned w

Culture, not nature: How traditional masculinity shapes male attitudes toward relationships.

Wahring, Simpson, and Van Lange attribute men's increased involvement in romantic relationships to biological, evolutionary, and social mechanisms. We argue, however, that the effects they describe are not inherent but culturally constructed - emerging from socially reinforced manhood ideals and evolving gender norms. To support this position, we draw on recent empirical research on traditional masculinity, the manosphere, and incel subcultures.

Clinical Perspectives on the Nature and Treatment of Romantic Breakups.

Enduring a romantic breakup is a typically highly distressing experience but one that has been surprisingly neglected as a scholarly topic in the psychotherapeutic literature. This introduction reviews the enduring popular interest in this phenomenon and summarizes the contributions of the articles in this issue of JCLP: In Session, all of which focus on working clinically with individuals struggling with the breakup of a romantic relationship. Within this issue, Jackson's case study features the insights of a straight female psychologist working with a gay female patient through the aftermath

The specificity of psychotherapeutic competence: A study protocol on the development of facilitative interpersonal skills across professional pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Facilitative interpersonal skills (FIS) are widely used as an operationalization of therapists' interpersonal competence. However, the degree to which FIS are specific outcomes of formal psychotherapy training or instead reflect more general abilities developed across different professional pathways or outside of any formal training is unclear. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: To test whether psychotherapy students show a stronger stage-related increase in FIS levels than students from other fields, this study protocol outlines a cross-sectional cohort design in which FIS levels are assess

Empirically Supported Couple Therapy Models for Couple Relationship Distress: A Replication and Update.

This systematic review replicated and updated Baucom and colleagues' (1998) evaluation of empirically supported treatments (ESTs) for couple relationship distress using the Chambless criteria, the primary framework used by the American Psychological Association to classify ESTs. Applying these criteria to 40 eligible studies, we found that, in contrast to Baucom and colleagues, no couple therapy models met the standards for strong empirical support; insufficient sample size and lack of independent replication were the most frequent limitations. Seven models demonstrated modest support: behavio

Toward an Understanding of the Psychological Meaning of Physiological Synchrony.

Physiological synchrony-coordinated changes in physiological activity between individuals-is a frequently studied yet variably interpreted phenomenon in psychological science. Decades of research show that physiological synchrony is ubiquitous across relationship and social contexts, but consensus remains elusive about what it means psychologically. We advance an inferential framework for mapping observed synchrony to warranted psychological conclusions by importing classical principles of psychophysiological inference into the interpersonal domain. Building on Cacioppo and Tassinary's logic o

Heads I win, tails you lose: Interpersonal aspects of borderline personality disorder.

Since borderline personality disorder was identified as a distinct psychiatric syndrome in the 1970s, it has been recognized as a disorder marked by disturbance in interpersonal functioning. Understanding the borderline patient's characteristic modes of relating to self and others is therefore of significant theoretical and clinical importance. This article seeks to examine multiple facets of borderline personality disorder believed to contribute to interpersonal dysfunction, including: common communication patterns observed in borderline patients, such as double-bind communication; the primit

Communication Paradoxes in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a disorder marked by a pattern of contradictory, paradoxical, and self-defeating behavior, yet the communication methods of patients with the condition have remained largely unexamined since the disorder was first described nearly a century ago. This article applies communication theory to the study of borderline personality disorder in an attempt to understand patients' characteristically paradoxical modes of relating. Three types of double-bind communications are examined-the "be spontaneous" paradox, the covert contract, and the Kafka trap. The potential p

Interpersonal emotion regulation in personality disorders: Introduction to a special section.

With joint interpersonal and affective impairments associated with personality disorders, understanding the intersection of these processes in these disorders is a critical emerging trajectory for research. An emerging line of research has been devoted to understanding interpersonal emotion regulation processes in personality disorders. This relatively nascent research area has recently gained traction internationally. This special section summarizes some of the recent innovations in this area of research. These investigations have harnessed a diverse range of methods, including dyadic approac

The hidden costs of human cooperation.

Cooperation enables humans to reshape entire environments and build complex societies. Although often celebrated, cooperation also has hidden costs. By presenting core mechanisms behind its emergence, we demonstrate that maintaining cooperation frequently relies on social control and coercion, which can lead to extortion and discrimination. Group cooperation further necessitates defining who belongs to the group, fostering exclusion and intergroup conflict. Free-rider concerns fuel scapegoating and polarization. These downsides challenge the notion of cooperation as a simple success story. The

Focusing attention on others' negative emotions reduces the effect of social relationships on children's distributive behaviors.

The present study investigates whether directing five- to six-year-old children's attention to hypothetical resource recipients that included familiar and non-familiar people would affect their favoritism toward a familiar person, as reflected in how they allocated resources. In Experiment 1, we instructed participants to give one of several stickers to another person or keep all the stickers for themselves. Under the control conditions, participants more frequently gave stickers to friends than to non-friends. However, when asked about others' emotions, they distributed stickers equally among

Trust in adolescence: Development, mechanisms and future directions.

Trust is the glue of society. While the trust we place in close others is crucial for our wellbeing, trust in strangers is important to fulfill needs that families and friends cannot provide. Adolescence is an important phase for the development of trust in strangers, because the social world of adolescents expands tremendously. We provide an overview of the development of trust in adolescence by reviewing studies that used the trust game, an experimental paradigm to measure trust between dyads during monetary exchange. We start from the notion that trust is a form of social reinforcement lear

Interpersonal Trust and Borderline Personality Disorder: Insights From Clinical Practice and Research: Introduction.

Individuals suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD) show a pervasive sense that others cannot be trusted, are vulnerable to negative therapeutic reactions, and can oscillate between idealized and persecutory interactions with others. These trust processing impairments impact both the immediate and wider social milieu of individuals with BPD, including therapist-patient interactions. Recently, research started unraveling the social-cognitive mechanisms of these impairments in BPD. In this Special Issue, we attempt to close the gap between research findings and clinical theories on

Transformation of social relationships in COVID-19 America: Remote communication may amplify political echo chambers.

The COVID-19 pandemic, with millions of Americans compelled to stay home and work remotely, presented an opportunity to explore the dynamics of social relationships in a predominantly remote world. Using the 1972-2022 General Social Surveys, we found that the pandemic significantly disrupted the patterns of social gatherings with family, friends, and neighbors but only momentarily. Drawing from the nationwide ego-network surveys of 41,033 Americans from 2020 to 2022, we found that the size and composition of core networks remained stable, although political homophily increased among nonkin rel
