Cancer cachexia differentially regulates visceral adipose tissue turnover.

Cancer cachexia (CC) is a progressive metabolic syndrome that is marked by severe body weight loss. Metabolic disarrangement of fat tissues is a very early event in CC, followed by adipose tissue (AT) atrophy and remodelling. However, there is little information regarding the possible involvement of cellular turnover in this process. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the effect of CC on AT turnover and fibrosis of mesenteric (MEAT) and retroperitoneal (RPAT) adipose tissue depots as possible factors that contribute to AT atrophy. CC was induced by a subcutaneous injection of Walker tumour cell

Pancreatitis in the setting of the metabolic syndrome.

There is paucity of literature on the relation of obesity with recurrent and chronic pancreatitis. We recorded the clinical details and the outcome of five patients with recurrent pancreatitis who had components of the metabolic syndrome. Their age ranged from 8 to 20 years. All five patients had acanthosis nigricans. Body mass index (BMI) could not be evaluated as these patients lost weight following episodes of pancreatitis. Three patients had two or more first-degree relatives who had diabetes mellitus. Only one patient had severe necrotizing pancreatitis. Coexisting liver disease was seen

Associations of DXA-measured abdominal adiposity with cardio-metabolic risk and related markers in early adolescence in Project Viva.

BACKGROUND: Increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT) precedes development of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia in adults. The associations of abdominal adiposity derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), including VAT, subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SAAT) and total abdominal adipose tissue (TAAT) with cardio-metabolic risk in adolescents are understudied. OBJECTIVES: We examined the cross-sectional associations of DXA-measured abdominal adiposity with cardio-metabolic risk and related markers in early adolescence (mean [SD] age 13.0 [0.7] years). METHODS: We collected dat

Electroacupuncture alleviates obesity-associated inflammatory responses by inhibiting dendritic cell migration.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is closely associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, particularly within visceral adipose tissues (VAT). Dendritic cells (DCs), as key antigen-presenting cells, bridge innate and adaptive immunity and play a pivotal role in regulating adipose tissue immune homeostasis. This study aims to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) on obesity-associated inflammation, with a particular focus on DCs migration. METHODS: A high-fat diet (HFD) was used to induce obesity in C57BL/6 mice. Electroacupuncture (EA) was administered to obese mice

Relationship between obesity indices and cognitive function in Japanese men: A cross-sectional study.

We aimed to investigate the associations among various obesity indices, including visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and cognitive function in community-dwelling Japanese men. This population-based cross-sectional study used data of 853 men who participated in the follow-up examinations of the Shiga Epidemiological Study of Subclinical Atherosclerosis. Among them, we analyzed data of 776 men who completed the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument (CASI) and had abdominal VAT and SAT areas measured using computed tomography. The VAT-to-SAT ratio (VSR) was calculated; parti

Associations between epicardial, visceral, and subcutaneous adipose tissue with diastolic function in men with and without HIV.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) are at greater risk for diastolic dysfunction compared with persons without HIV (PWOH). An increase in visceral adipose tissue is common among PWH and greater visceral adipose tissue is associated with diastolic dysfunction among PWOH. We investigated associations of visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue, and other fat depots with subclinical diastolic dysfunction among men with and without HIV (MWH and MWOH). DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of MWH and MWOH in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). METHODS: Participants underwent echocardi

Clinical impact of visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio in patients with acute aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has increased worldwide. Although the visceral-to-subcutaneous fat ratio (VS ratio) is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, its clinical impact on the long-term prognosis of patients with acute aortic dissection (AAD) remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 111 patients with AAD admitted to our hospital from 2013 to 2016. Patients who died during hospitalization, and those diagnosed with Marfan's syndrome were excluded. Visceral and subcutaneous fat accumulation (VFA, SFA) at umbilical level were calculated on a dedicated

Dynamic changes in the distribution of facial and abdominal adipose tissue correlated with surgical treatment in acromegaly.

PURPOSE: Acromegaly is a systemic metabolic disease. Growth hormone (GH) have a significant impact on adipose tissue (AT). A huge reduction of serum GH after surgical treatment may cause substantial AT redistribution. The objective of this study was to illustrate the dynamic changes in distribution of facial and abdominal AT correlated with surgical treatment in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: Abdominal AT in 17 acromegaly patients (group 1) was studied longitudinally preoperatively and 1 month to 1 year postoperatively. The facial and abdominal subcutaneous AT (fSAT and aSAT) of another 1

A multivariate model for the prediction of pregnancy following laparoscopic artificial insemination of sheep.

The causes of variation in the success of laparoscopic artificial insemination (AI) in sheep are not well understood. As such, this study incorporated the contributions of multiple male and female factors relevant to the success of AI into a comprehensive prediction model for pregnancy success. Data from Merino ewes (N = 30 254) including age, uterine tone (1; pale/flaccid-5; turgid/pink), intra-abdominal fat (1; little to no fat present-5; high fat), time of insemination and sire used, were recorded during AI. A subset of semen per sire (N = 388) was thawed and assessed for volume, subjective…

Three different computed tomography obesity indices, two standard methods, and one novel measurement, and their association with outcomes after colorectal cancer surgery.

BACKGROUND: Obesity can be measured by different indices, either as body mass index (BMI) or by more intuitive radiological measurements, and obesity has been shown to have an impact on outcome after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the thickness of the subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in the abdominal wall can be used as a surrogate for the visceral fat area (VFA)-both measured on computed tomography (CT)-in prediction of short- and long-term outcomes after elective CRC surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Preoperative CT scans of all patients having elective CRC

Estimation of abdominal subcutaneous fat volume of obese adults from single-slice MRI data - Regression coefficients and agreement.

PURPOSE: Cross-sectional imaging is increasingly used to quantify adipose tissue compartments in subjects with overweight or obesity. The lack of ionizing radiation makes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) highly preferable to computed tomography (CT) although it is generally less standardized and time-consuming. Fat areas of single or stacks of neighboring slices have previously been considered as surrogates to avoid laborious processing of whole abdominal data-but studies are inconsistent in design and results. The present work therefore analyzed a relatively large number of overweight or obes

RNA-Seq Analysis of Abdominal Fat in Genetically Fat and Lean Chickens Highlights a Divergence in Expression of Genes Controlling Adiposity, Hemostasis, and Lipid Metabolism.

Genetic selection for enhanced growth rate in meat-type chickens (Gallus domesticus) is usually accompanied by excessive adiposity, which has negative impacts on both feed efficiency and carcass quality. Enhanced visceral fatness and several unique features of avian metabolism (i.e., fasting hyperglycemia and insulin insensitivity) mimic overt symptoms of obesity and related metabolic disorders in humans. Elucidation of the genetic and endocrine factors that contribute to excessive visceral fatness in chickens could also advance our understanding of human metabolic diseases. Here, RNA sequenci

Visceral Adipose Tissue Volume and the Occurrence of Colorectal Adenoma in Follow-up Colonoscopy for Screening and Surveillance.

Whether obesity accelerates adenoma recurrence is not yet clear; therefore, we analyzed the risk factors for adenoma occurrence at follow-up colonoscopy, with a focus on visceral adiposity. In total, 1516 subjects underwent index colonoscopy, computed tomography, and questionnaire assessment from February to May 2008; 539 subjects underwent follow-up colonoscopy at the National Cancer Center at least 6 mo after the index colonoscopy. The relationships between the presence of adenoma at follow-up colonoscopy and anthropometric obesity measurements, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumf

Metabolic implications of hepatic, pancreatic and abdominal adipose tissue depots in Asian Indians across normoglycaemia, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to evaluate hepatic, pancreatic and abdominal fat depots across glycaemic categories in Asian Indians with matched BMI, and to identify predictors of dysglycaemia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 45 adults (15 each with normoglycaemia or living with prediabetes and newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes) were matched for BMI. Fat fractions in the liver and pancreas were quantified on the basis of the proton density fat fraction (PDFF) measured using multi-echo chemical-shift-encoded MRI (CSE-MRI). We quantified the cross-sectional area of following
