The ultrastructure of the vascular supply of the endometrium in uteri containing inert and copper bearing intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) has been compared with that in uteri removed at comparable stages of the menstrual cycle for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. In the endometrium from all uteri containing inert and copper IUCDs, stromal capillaries below the devices showed extensive microthrombosis with platelet and fibrin aggregations filling gaps in the endothelial linings of the vessels. Considerable stromal haemorrhage and erosion of surface epithelium was associated with this

We report a case of a translocated intrauterine device (IUD) embedded within the colon wall. Endoscopic tattooing and laparoscopy was used to identify the colonic site and facilitate extraction by colonic resection. A review of the literature and discussion of laparoscopic management of this complication is presented.

Displacement of an intrauterine device (IUD) through the perforation site is a rare but one of the major complications. Theoretically, an extrauterine IUD can be located anywhere in the abdominopelvic cavity. It may be asymptomatic or may cause serious complications, including infection, fistula, organ perforation, or bowel obstruction. However, there is no report of IUD located within an ovarian carcinoma to our knowledge, and our report is the first case of an IUD found in the center of an ovarian cancer.

The cause of ectopic pregnancy is associated with two major categories: the integrity of the oviduct and the quality of the fertilized ovum. Several conditions that alter the tubal transport system include inflammatory insults, intrauterine devices, surgical manipulation, tubal ligations, salpingitis isthmica nodusa, DES exposure, and induced abortions. Risk factors that may theoretically alter ovum quality or the hormonal environment include ovulation induction, fertilization in vitro, delayed ovulation, and transperitoneal ovum migration. As we continue to investigate the fallopian tube and

Although intrauterine devices (IUDs) are known for their low failure rate in pregnancy prevention, potential risks associated with their use include uterine perforation and migration through the abdomen. In this particular case, the patient experienced simultaneous IUD failure and perforation, with the device becoming embedded in an omentum. A 28-year-old woman who was 39 weeks plus one day gestation presented for caesarean section. During the caesarean section, it was discovered that the IUD had entered the omentum through a hole in the posterior part of the uterus. The result of the birth wa

Background: Intrauterine device (IUD) migration to the ureter is rare. Symptoms can vary, but often mimic renal colic. Radiographic imaging may aid the diagnosis of a foreign body in the ureter. Reports on endoscopic managements of a migrated IUD are not well described. Case Presentation: We present a 36-year-old woman with a history of IUD insertion. Her symptoms included hematuria, dysuria, and suprapubic/abdominal pressure. After the removal of her IUD by her gynecologist, her hematuria eventually stopped, but she presented again with persistent pain. CT revealed a radiopaque foreign body i

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine contraception is a widely used, highly effective means of birth control. Uterine perforation is a serious, albeit rare, complication of intrauterine device (IUD) use. Although uterine perforation by levonorgestrel-releasing (20 micro g/day) intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) has already been reported, the peritoneal adhesion potential of this IUD is unknown.
METHODS: The medical files of all patients diagnosed with an intra-peritoneal IUD between the years 1990-2002 at Hadassah Medical Center were reviewed. Histopathological study of peritoneal adhesion tissue adjacent to

Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs) are commonly used in low to middle-income countries. IUCD migration into the adjacent organs, especially bladder, is exceptionally rare, though important to exclude. A 55-year-old para three post-menopausal female with history of recurrent urinary tract infections presented with lower urinary tract symptoms. Urine examination was indicative of Eschericia coli infection. Pelvic radiograph revealed an intravesical calculus having a T-shaped extension. Cystoscopy confirmed a bladder stone encasing an encrusted IUCD. Cystolithotripsy was performed, fragme

CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old woman with an intrauterine device placed more than 10 years before consulted our department after a failed attempt to its removal in the outpatient area. While performing the colposcopy a completely fibrosed cervical canal permitted no access to the uterine cavity. The IUD was confirmed to still be placed intrauterine by pelvix x-ray and an endovaginal sonography. Due the risk for future infections, a device extraction was recommended, although the patient categorically refused a hysteroscopic approach as an hysterectomy. After discussing all available options the pa

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bladder stones, although rare in a healthy bladder, can emerge due to various factors, including obstructions in urinary flow, recurrent infections, and foreign bodies. Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs) are known for their potential to migrate from the uterine cavity, leading to unusual complications such as bladder stone formation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old woman, previously treated for a complicated urinary tract infection, presented with intermittent lower abdominal pain, dysuria, and hematuria. She had a history of an IUCD insertion 15 years ea

Management of intrauterine device (IUD) perforation can be complex when adjacent pelvic organs are involved. Laparoscopic removal is commonly performed; however, cases involving bowel adherence may require intraoperative assistance from additional surgical services. We report the case of a 31-year-old gravida 2, para 2 (G2P2) woman with a history of cesarean delivery who presented with pelvic pain five weeks postpartum and was found to have an IUD perforating the posterior uterine wall, with adherence to the rectum and left ovary. The patient underwent robotic-assisted laparoscopic removal of

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device (IUD) displacement into the urinary bladder is an exceedingly rare complication. Given its potential to induce bladder irritation, erosion, or perforation, affected patients may present with lower abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and dysuria. As a result, clinical symptoms often prompt timely diagnosis, leading to early detection in the majority of reported cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of IUD displacement into the urinary bladder that remained undiagnosed for nine years. Following her fourth IUD insertion, the patient developed lower

The application of a copper IUD can perforate completely the uterus and involve adjacent organs such as the bladder, small bowel, colon, rectum or appendix. Once the diagnosis is established, complete extraction must follow. We present a case report of a 33 year-old patient in which a copper IUD was placed in a medical office, three months after a third cesarean, without history of sepsis. Ninety days after placement, the patient complained of menstrual irregularities (opsomenhorrea) without any other symptoms. On physical examination with speculum, the IUD's guide strings were not visible; a

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine devices are currently one of the leading forms of reversible contraception in the world. However, in approximately 10-25% of women, intrauterine devices can become malpositioned, leading to consequences including pain, bleeding, as well as possible decreased contraceptive efficacy.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether certain reproductive and uterine characteristics are associated with an increased risk of intrauterine device malposition. We hypothesized that anatomical characteristics such as the presence of any uterine anomalies, particularly congenital anomali

The incidence of ectopic pregnancies is increasing. Common risk factors are tubal pathology, previous tubal surgery, previous ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine device use and embryo transfer. Levonelle-2, a progesterone-only postcoital contraceptive works by a combination of mechanisms including ovulation inhibition, prevention of fertilization, and inhibition of implantation. It is 85% effective and there have been 12 reported cases of ectopic pregnancy in the UK with its use. It is believed that progesterone slows the intratubal migration of the fertilized ovum. In the case reported here, a wo

A single 4.7 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm solid nodule was removed from the bladder of a 24 years old white female who had lost an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) installed approximately four years ago. The nodule showed no external evidence of an IUD or its string. An examination of the nodular surface by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed mostly amorphous material with some adherent filamentous structures. Its energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis revealed the presence of calcium and phosphorus suggesting that the nodule was actually a urolith. Fracturing the nodule exposed an embedded enti
