In 2005 a Mycoplasma species was isolated from ocular-conjunctival swabs from an adult male Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) from the Valle d'Aosta Region, Northern Italy. The animal suffered from bilateral ocular discharge with diffuse inflammation, severe corneal involvement of the left eye and mild corneal opacity of the right eye. Interferons (IFNs) are cytokines that play an important role in the immune response of animals and humans. CASE REPORT: The case is presented of a newborn girl who developed herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratoconjunctivitis, despite a vaginal delivery, and the absence of medical history or active clinical maternal HSV infection. Diagnosis relies on a high level of clinical suspicion and the use of diagnostic tests.
DISCUSSION: Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratitis, although relatively uncommon, is associated with significant morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The validity of the 15-min adenovirus assay SAS Adenotest was evaluated compared with virus detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from conjunctival swabs.
METHODS: In 75 patients with assumed epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, adenovirus detection from conjunctival swabs was performed by the immunochromatographic assay SAS Adenotest and PCR.
RESULTS: In 25 patients adenovirus was detected by PCR, 18 of whom were detected by the SAS Adenotest and 7 of whom were not. No false positive results occurred. Sensitivity was 72% and specificity was 100%.

An outbreak of infectious kerato-conjunctivitis is described in a dairy herd during the (winter)stable period. Moraxella was isolated from lacrimation fluid from three animals. The development of the infection was possibly precipitated by a vaccination with modified live IBR virus, adenovirus type 3 and parainfluenza virus type 3. Presumably, climatological-stable conditions play an important role in the clinical manifestation of the infection.
