(22E)-3beta-Hydroxysitosta-5,22-dien-7-one, (22R, 23R)-3beta,22,23-trihydroxysitost-5-en-7-one, and (22R, 23R)-3beta-hydroxy-22,23-isopropylidenedioxysitost-5-en-7-one were synthesized. The cytotoxicity and effects on cholesterol biosynthesis of the resulting 7-ketosterols, 7-ketocholesterol, and (22S,23S)-3beta-hydroxy-22,23-oxidositost-5-en-7-one were studied in hepatoblastoma Hep G2 cells.

Yin Zhi Huang (YZH) is a decoction of four plants which is widely used in Asia to treat neonatal jaundice. This study compares the ability of phenobarbital and the individual herbs comprising YZH, Artemisia, Gardenia, Rheum, and Scutellaria baicalensis, to induce hepatic drug and bilirubin metabolizing enzymes in rats. Herbal decoctions (30 ml/kg/day) or phenobarbital (60 mg/kg/day) were administered for 5 days. Only phenobarbital increased cytochrome P-450 levels whereas Gardenia slightly decreased levels. Artemisia, Rheum and phenobarbital increased bilirubin glucuronyl transferase activity.

Hirsute women pose a diagnostic dilemma when urinary 17-ketosteroid and serum testosterone levels are normal. To locate the site of androgen excess in 19 hirsute women, blood samples were collested from the left ovarian and adrenal veins via a catheter insertedinto the right femoral vein. Laparoscopy and bilateral ovarian biopsies were also preformed in 18 of the 19 patients studied. Hydroxysteroid (17β)-dehydrogenase type 1 (HSD17B1) catalyzes the conversion of low active 17-ketosteroids, androstenedione (A-dione) and estrone (E1) to highly active 17-hydroxysteroids, testosterone (T) and E2, respectively. In this study, the importance of HSD17B1 in ovarian estrogen production was determined using Hsd17b1 knockout (HSD17B1KO) mice. BACKGROUND: Adrenal tumors that secrete androgens exclusively are extraordinarily rare. The aim of this study was to characterize patients with pure androgen-secreting adrenal tumors.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review from January 1946 through November 2002 identified 11 female patients with pure androgen-secreting adrenal tumors.
