Chronic Perigestational Exposure to Chlorpyrifos Induces Perturbations in Gut Bacteria and Glucose and Lipid Markers in Female Rats and Their Offspring.

An increasing burden of evidence is pointing toward pesticides as risk factors for chronic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, leading to metabolic syndrome. Our objective was to assess the impact of chlorpyrifos (CPF) on metabolic and bacteriologic markers. Female rats were exposed before and during gestation and during lactation to CPF (1 mg/kg/day). Outcomes such as weight, glucose and lipid profiles, as well as disturbances in selected gut bacterial levels, were measured in both the dams (at the end of the lactation period) and in their female offspring at early adulthood (60 da

Maternal N-Acetyl Cysteine Intake Improved Glucose Tolerance in Obese Mice Offspring.

Exposure to certain environmental factors during the early stages of development was found to affect health in adulthood. Among other environmental factors, oxidative stress has been suggested to be involved in fetal programming, leading to elevated risk for metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes; however, the possibility that antioxidant consumption during early life may affect the development of diabetes has scarcely been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) given during pregnancy and lactation on the susceptibility of offspring t

[The benefits of breastfeeding and associated risks of replacement with baby formulas].

Breastfeeding is the nourishment designed by nature for the newborn and the infant; however its prevalence is nowadays not optimal. The aim of this article is to review the current evidence of the benefits of breastfeeding for children and society, and to elaborate the risks associated with the replacement of lactation with baby formulas. Breastfeeding is a protective factor for several infectious, atopic, and cardiovascular diseases as well as for leukaemia, necrotising enterocolitis, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. It also has a positive impact on neurodevelopment, improving

Protective effects of maternal methyl donor supplementation on adult offspring of high fat diet-fed dams.

Obesity has become a global public health problem associated with metabolic dysfunction and chronic disorders. It has been shown that the risk of obesity and the DNA methylation profiles of the offspring can be affected by maternal nutrition, such as high-fat diet (HFD) consumption. The aim of this study was to investigate whether metabolic dysregulation and physiological abnormalities in offspring caused by maternal HFD can be alleviated by the treatment of methyl donors during pregnancy and lactation of dams. Female C57BL/6 mice were assigned to specific groups and given different nutrients

[Descriptive epidemiology of placental retention in intensive dairy herds in Brittany].

The influences of several risk factors (temporal, mechanical, zootechnical and nutritional) on the incidence of placental retention (PR) were tested. The study was conducted in Brittany on 5,240 calvings of Black-Pied females belonging to 47 herds surveyed over a period of four consecutive years. For twin births, the PR-incidence levels were only decreased in the case of calves born alive. Single calvings were associated with PR after more than three artificial inseminations, or when stillbirths, dystocia or shortened gestational periods were observed, but the frequency varied in relation to c

A nonhuman primate model of panic disorder.

In this article we report on the reliable production of several features of panic attacks following subcutaneous administration of sodium lactate to nonhuman primates. Unrestrained monkeys were evaluated by an observer without knowledge of the subjects' treatment with either sodium lactate or a dextrose control solution. The lactate produced temporally circumscribed episodes of agitation, wariness, and motor responses, normally elicited under stressful or threatening conditions. In an initial pharmacological intervention, we found that pretreatment with imipramine blocked the response to lacta

Cholesterol and lipid metabolism at the start of lactation in dairy cows with different body condition scores.

Over-conditioned dairy cows at calving and those experiencing an energy deficit in early lactation are predisposed to postpartum (p.p.) metabolic disorders such as ketosis and fatty liver disease. While alterations in energy and fatty acid metabolism during early lactation are well documented, short-term dynamics of cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism at the onset of lactation are poorly characterized. In this study, we investigated the short-term dynamics of cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism during the first wk p.p. in cows with differing BCS at calving and contrasting feed energy sup

A Mitochondrial Specific Antioxidant Reverses Metabolic Dysfunction and Fatty Liver Induced by Maternal Cigarette Smoke in Mice.

Maternal smoking leads to glucose and lipid metabolic disorders and hepatic damage in the offspring, potentially due to mitochondrial oxidative stress. Mitoquinone mesylate (MitoQ) is a mitochondrial targeted antioxidant with high bioavailability. This study aimed to examine the impact of maternal cigarette smoke exposure (SE) on offspring's metabolic profile and hepatic damage, and whether maternal MitoQ supplementation during gestation can affect these changes. Female Balb/c mice (eight weeks) were either exposed to air or SE for six weeks prior to mating and throughout gestation and lactati

Fluid consumption by Mexican women during pregnancy and first semester of lactation.

The objective of this study was to describe daily fluid consumption in a sample of pregnant or lactating adult women. Women between 18 and 45 years of age, residents of Mexico City, stratified by socioeconomic status were asked to register their total fluid intake during 7 consecutive days. A total of 153 pregnant and 155 lactating women were recruited. On average, they drank 2.62 L/day and 2.75 L/day, respectively. Forty-one percent of pregnant women drank less than the recommended 2.3 L fluids/day, and 54% of women drank less than the recommended intake of 2.7 L/day during the first semester

Effects of snack intake during pregnancy and lactation on reproductive outcome in mild hyperglycemic rats.

Metabolic disorders, like diabetes, as well as maternal diet, alter nutrient availability in utero, inducing adaptations in the offspring. Whether the effects of maternal hyperglycemia are modulated by diet, however, has yet to be explored. In the current study, we examined this issue by giving females rats, treated neonatally with STZ to induce mild hyperglycemia, and control littermates either ad libitum access to standard chow (Control n = 17; STZ n = 16) or standard chow and snacks (Control-snack n = 18; STZ-snack n = 19) (potato chips and a red fruit-flavored sucrose syrup solution 1.5%)

Management of Common Complications of Lactation: The Breast Surgeon's Role in Examining the Science and Debunking Old Myths.

Breast surgeons are well poised to promote evidence-based recommendations for lactation-related breast disorders and clarify existing misconceptions in traditional care. Surgeons can resolve lactational fluid collections and avoid milk fistula development during drainage and/or other procedures on the breast. Using principles of surgical wound management, they can provide effective care of nipple trauma. They can distinguish between inflammatory and infectious mastitis and promote delicate tissue handling to prevent breast injury and phlegmon. Finally, breast surgeons can debunk the myth of fu

Transient nephrogenic diabetes insipidus caused by fetal exposure to haloperidol.

Haloperidol is commonly used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Data from animal experiments indicate haloperidol is not teratogenic, but is embryotoxic in high doses. For the first time, we report a neonate with transient nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (DI) caused by fetal exposure to haloperidol. The magnitude of risk associated with the use of haloperidol during pregnancy appears to be small, but nephrogenic DI secondary to haloperidol is a serious condition with the risk of hypernatremic dehydration. Haloperidol can have adverse effects on the fetus and newborn infant, that's why o

Prolactin and sodium lactate-induced panic.

Sodium lactate infusions reliably induce panic attacks in panic disorder patients but not in normal controls, but the mechanism underlying this response is unknown. We studied the plasma prolactin response to infusion of 0.5 molar sodium lactate in 38 patients with panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks, and 16 normal controls. As expected, baseline plasma prolactin was significantly higher in female subjects than in male subjects. However, the males who experienced lactate-induced panic had significantly elevated baseline prolactin levels compared to male nonpanickers and controls.

Maternal psychological distress on delayed onset of lactation II: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies suggest a potential association between maternal psychological distress and delayed onset of lactation II (DOLII), but the evidence remains inconclusive. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WANFANG, and VIP databases, from database inception to August 30, 2024. Two independent reviewers screened articles, extracted data, and assessed study quality. Discrepancies were resolved through discussion. M
