The highly diverse group of rove beetles, Staphylinidae, displays a great morphological variety across both adult and larval stages. However, due to the often cryptic habitats of their larvae, comprehensive descriptions of larval morphologies across extant ingroups remain incomplete. Also, the fossil record of rove beetle larvae appears to be sparse to date. We report here 35 newly identified fossil larvae of Staphylinidae from eight pieces of Myanmar Kachin amber, dating to the Cretaceous. Notably, one amber piece preserves three larval syninclusions, while another contains nine adults alongs…

UNLABELLED: Chironomids are insects which inhabit wetlands. In countries such as Sudan, The United States. Egypt and Japan they are the cause of serious environmental allergy. In Europe, and particularly in Spain, allergy to Chironomids is infrequent and has only been described in patients who handle Chironomid larvae which form part of certain fish foods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a case of hypersensitivity to the Chironomid Midge (Chironomus thummi thummi) in a 23-year-old patient who on two occasions, after being in contact with fishfood, suffered rash, rhinoconjunctivitis, dyspnea …

Biological neural networks undergo dynamic structural and functional changes during development, yet how their controllability evolves across different life stages remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the neural network of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a fully mapped model organism, to examine changes in network controllability from larval stages to adulthood. Using structural controllability and target control frameworks, we show that while global neural controllability progressively increases with developmental complexity, muscle-target controllability declines after early…

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) of genitals has been very rarely reported in the literature. We describe a case of CLM of the penis in a 38-year-old Caucasian patient who sunbathed naked whilst in Phuket island (Thailand). The patient was successfully treated with 1% ivermectin cream (2 applications/day for 2 weeks), under occlusive dressing.

The surrounding thermal environment is highly important for the survival and fitness of animals, and as a result most exhibit behavioral and neural responses to temperature changes. We study signals generated by thermosensory neurons in Drosophila larvae and also the physical and sensory effects of temperature variation on locomotion and navigation. In particular we characterize how sensory neuronal and behavioral responses to temperature variation both change across the development of the larva. Looking at a wide range of non-nociceptive isotropic thermal environments, we characterize the dep…

BACKGROUND: The association of fever, focal hepatic lesions and peripheral hyper-eosinophilia (FHLH) can be observed in both infectious and non-infectious conditions. Fascioliasis, capillariasis, toxocariasis, all causes of visceral larva migrans (VLM), represent most of the former, whilst lymphomas, eosinophilic leukemias and mastocytosis belong in the non-infectious conditions.
METHODS: We prospectively followed a young patient presenting with FHLH in the Tuscany region of Italy.
RESULTS: The patient was subject to serological and parasitological examination in an attempt to clarify the or…

BACKGROUND: Visceral larva migrans may present with systemic symptoms such as fever, hepatomegaly, pneumonitis or ocular symptoms.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A 7-year-old girl with fever, pain abdomen and persistent eosinophilia. Imaging and histopathology were suggestive of visceral larva migrans.
MESSAGE: The diagnosis of visceral larva migrans is often delayed since similar symptoms of fever, hepatomegaly and peripheral eosinophilia occur in more common and identifiable tropical parasitic and non-parasitic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Toxocara canis is a nematode that parasitizes dogs, while humans are paratenic hosts. When humans are infected the migrating larvae damage the liver, lungs and even the nervous system. Larva migrans diagnosis is based on immunological techniques; however, the commercial immunodiagnostic kits detect anti-T. canis antibodies which may cross-react with other parasites, mainly nematodes with extra-intestinal migration. Moreover, antibodies do not necessarily reflect an active infection; so detection and quantification of circulating antigens may provide appropriate and timely informati…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the CT and sonographic findings of hepatic visceral larva migrans of Toxocara canis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four patients (44 men, 10 women; age range, 30-80 years; mean age, 53 years) with serologically confirmed visceral larva migrans of Toxocara canis underwent evaluation of the liver with CT (n = 25), sonography (n = 48), or both. Two radiologists used consensus for retrospective evaluation of CT and sonographic findings. Correlation between the presence and severity of hepatic abnormalities on images and the degree of peripheral eosi…

The authors describe a case of an 38-year-old woman suffering from a parasitical infection which is rare in Hungary. It was diagnosed in connection with a surgical liver segment resection. Visceral larval migrans is an infection caused by migration of the roundworm Toxocara larvae to organs and tissues. The authors describe the pathophysiology of the disease, clinical symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.

A case of acute intestinal anisakiasis has been reported; a nematode larva being found in the submucosa of the ileum of a woman in Jaén (Spain). The source of infection was the ingestion of raw Engraulis encrasicholus. On the basis of its morphology, the worm has been identified as a fourth-stage larva of Anisakis simplex. In Spain, this is the ninth report of human anisakiasis and also probably the first case of anisakiasis caused by a fourth-stage larva of A. simplex.

Visceral Larva migrans is a human infection by the larvae of dog ascarids or, more rarely, ascarids of other animal species. It is endemic in France. Two cases which respectively manifested as acute oligoarthritis and inflammatory myalgia with increased muscle enzyme levels are reported. Manifestations of the minor forms of this infestation are reviewed.

The occurrence of the first seven cases of visceral larva migrans in Trinidad and Tobago is described. All cases occurred in children of the same family. The ELISA test was used to confirm the clinical diagnosis.
