From 1987 to 1991, 26 patients with malignant bone tumors (osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma) in the diaphysis or metaphysis of long bones have been treated by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and intercalary bone allograft replacement after resection. The mean follow-up was 3 years in 23 patients, 2 died from tumors, and 1 had an amputation because of local recurrence. BACKGROUND: In precarious conditions, bone exposure on the leg is synonymous with amputation. The authors describe their experiences with such injuries in 15 patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients were operated by the same surgeon in Afghanistan and Ivory Coast for bone exposure on the leg after war or roadcrash injuries. A flap was performed after an initial debridement and external fixation. The delay between the flap and the first injury was about 42 days.
RESULTS: The duration of hospitalization following the flap was about eight days. Cicatrization was complete after 25 days.

Five children with six congenital pseudarthroses of the long bones of the forearm are described. Four cases were the result of neurofibromatosis, one was related to fibrous dysplasia, and one appears to be idiopathic. Forty patients with unilateral osteoarthritis of the hip were studied with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to quantify disuse osteopenia in their affected leg by examining the proximal femur and tibia. Bone loss was assessed as a percentage of the contralateral value which compares bone mineral density of the affected and normal sides.
