Fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith)] is a major economic pest throughout the Western Hemisphere of maize, cotton, sorghum, and a variety of agricultural grasses and vegetable crops. Previous studies demonstrated extensive annual migrations occurring as far north as Canada from overwintering locations in southern Florida and Texas. In contrast, migratory behavior in the rest of the hemisphere is largely uncharacterized. Understanding the migration patterns of fall armyworm will facilitate efforts to predict the spread of pesticide resistance traits that repeatedly arise in this s

BACKGROUND: The chromosome characteristics of the butterfly Bicyclus anynana, have received little attention, despite the scientific importance of this species. This study presents the characterization of chromosomes in this species by means of cytogenetic analysis and linkage mapping.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Physical genomic features in the butterfly B. anynana were examined by karyotype analysis and construction of a linkage map. Lepidoptera possess a female heterogametic W-Z sex chromosome system. The WZ-bivalent in pachytene oocytes of B. anynana consists of an abnormally small, h

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae decompose several organic wastes into valuable biomass (oil, protein, chitin, and frass) for promising applications. Black Soldier Fly Oil (BSFO) is extracted using a mechanical pressing method, an affordable technique that yields about 24.56% oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of oil showed a high content of fatty acids, with 3 predominant fatty acids, oleic acid (40.14%), palmitic acid (24.53%), and lauric acid (10.00%). Black soldier fly oil nanoemulsion (BSFO-NE) exhibited a droplet size o

Lepidoptera suffer critical lack of genetic tools and heritable genome edition has been achieved only in a few model species. Here we demonstrate that the CRISPR/Cas9 system is highly efficient for genome editing in a non-model crop pest Lepidoptera, the noctuid moth Spodoptera littoralis. We knocked-out the olfactory receptor co-receptor Orco gene to investigate its function in Lepidoptera olfaction. We find that 89.6% of the injected individuals carried Orco mutations, 70% of which transmitted them to the next generation. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated Orco knockout caused defects in plant odor and se

Sexually dimorphic coloration is common in Lepidoptera. In addition to differences in pigmentation, Lepidopterans also exhibit sexually dimorphic structural coloration. Lycaenidae are unique among Lepidoptera due to the presence of a multilayer pepper-pot photonic structure located within the body of their cover scales. While sexually dimorphic pepper-pot structures in Lycaenidae have previously been observed between male blue scales and female melanic scales, the nature of sexually dimorphic photonic structures within non-pigmented scales has yet to be examined in detail. In this study, we ex

The insecticidal and antifeedant activities of five 7-chloro-4-(1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)quinoline derivatives were evaluated against the maize armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). These hybrids were prepared through a copper-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC, known as a click reaction) and displayed larvicidal properties with LD50 values below 3 mg/g insect, and triazolyl-quinoline hybrid 6 showed an LD50 of 0.65 mg/g insect, making it 2-fold less potent than methomyl, which was used as a reference insecticide (LD50 = 0.34 mg/g insect). Compound 4 was the most active antifeeda

Determining the effects of chemicals used in agricultural pest control on non-target organisms such as parasitoids is crucial for biological control programs. The pupal endoparasitoid wasp Pimpla turionellae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is an important biological control agent that relies on natural hosts, such as the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), to complete its development. This study aimed to evaluate the in vivo and in silico impacts of the antifungal agent terbinafine (TRB) on the oxidative stress markers and detoxification enzymes of adult P. turionellae.

Pheromones are utilized to a great extent in insects. Many of these pheromones are biosynthesized through a pathway involving fatty acids. This chapter will provide examples where the biosynthetic pathways of fatty acid-derived pheromones have been studied in detail. These include pheromones from Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. Many species of Lepidoptera utilize fatty acids as precursors to pheromones with a functional group that include aldehydes, alcohols, and acetate esters. In addition, the biosynthesis of hydrocarbons will be briefly examined because many insects utilize hydroc

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasingly pervasive driver of global change that disrupts natural diel rhythms and alters species interactions. However, its effects on plant-pollinator networks across coupled day-night systems remain poorly understood, particularly in environmentally sensitive alpine ecosystems. Here, we conducted a field manipulation experiment in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau, comparing illuminated and unlit conditions, and constructed temporally explicit pollination networks by integrating diurnal and nocturnal interactions. Despite no detectable changes

The extensive biodiversification of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) is partly attributed to their unique mouthparts (proboscis [Pr]) that can span in length from less than 1 mm to over 280 mm in Darwin's sphinx moths. Lepidoptera, similar to other insects, are believed to inhale and exhale respiratory gases only through valve-like spiracles on their thorax and abdomen, making gas exchange through the narrow tracheae (Tr) challenging for the elongated Pr. How Lepidoptera overcome distance effects for gas transport to the Pr is an open question that is important to understanding how the Pr e

Seasonal migration in animals is a widespread and complex phenomenon, yet the mechanisms underlying orientation and navigation remain poorly understood in many taxa. In Lepidoptera, most insights come from monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) and Australian bogong moths (Agrotis infusa), which use both visual and geomagnetic cues for orientation. However, these species undertake multigenerational round trips between breeding grounds and specific non-breeding areas and are, therefore, not representative of most other lepidopteran migrants, for which the sensory mechanisms guiding orientation

Sperm dimorphism, the production of two distinct sperm morphs by a single male, is a widespread but enigmatic reproductive phenomenon. In Lepidoptera, fertilizing eupyrene sperm coexist with anucleate apyrene sperm, which cannot fertilize eggs but are nevertheless required for successful reproduction. Despite the prevalence and presumed adaptive significance of sperm dimorphism, the molecular basis of this trait remains limited. Here, we characterize the proteome of dimorphic sperm in the Cabbage White butterfly, Pieris rapae, an emerging model for sexual selection and postcopulatory interacti

Males are homogametic (ZZ) and females are heterogametic (WZ) with respect to the sex chromosomes in many species of butterflies and moths (insect order Lepidoptera). Genes on the Z chromosome influence traits involved in larval development, environmental adaptation, and reproductive isolation. To facilitate the investigation of these traits across Lepidoptera, we developed 43 degenerate primer pairs to PCR amplify orthologs of 43 Bombyx mori Z chromosome-linked genes. Of the 34 orthologs that amplified by PCR in Ostrinia nubilalis, 6 co-segregated with the Z chromosome anchor markers kettin (

Lepidopterism refers to the adverse medical effects of contact with insects of the order Lepidoptera, which includes both moths and butterflies. These effects typically result from contact with an insect during the caterpillar (larval) stage. Lepidopterism involves multiple pathologic mechanisms, including direct toxicity of venom and mechanical irritant effects. Clinical patterns associated with contact with lepidoptera include localized stinging reactions, papular urticaria and dermatitis, urticarial wheals, and hemorrhagic diathesis. Accurate diagnosis of symptoms associated with contact wi

Sexual signalling by pheromones is essential for mate finding and mate choice in moths and plays an important role in reproductive isolation. Acetates (i.e., acetate esters) produced by females of Heliothis (Chloridea) subflexa Fabricius, 1777 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) attract conspecific males but repel Heliothis virescens Fabricius, 1777 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) males. A QTL (quantitative trait locus) harbouring carboxylesterases and lipases was previously shown to affect acetates, and CRISPR/Cas9-induced knockouts increased acetate amounts by blocking hydrolysis of the esters as expected. Little information is available regarding the lethal and sublethal effects of pesticides on Trichogramma achaeae (Nagaraja and Nagarkatti; Hymenoptera: Tricogrammatidae) during integrated management of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick; Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), an important pest for tomato production. Twenty-two pesticides sprayed on Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller; Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs were evaluated on the mortality of adult parasitoids upon contact with the hosts 24 h after the treatments and their sublethal effects on the parasitoids were assessed in laboratory conditions. Tests were carried ou

Elasmus steffani (Viggiani) (Hymenoptera: Elasmidae) is a gregarious idiobiont ectoparasitoid of Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), an olive crop pest. In the substitute host Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), the duration of the developmental stages was approximately 11-15 days. The preoviposition was 8.9 ± 5.0 days, and oviposition lasted 30.4 ± 10.5 days, with a reproduction capacity of 185.5 ± 62.3 eggs per female, for a mean of 5.4 ± 0.9 eggs per day. The oviposition rhythm reached its maximum when the parasitoid was 35 days of age. The lack of food nega

The antifeedant and contact toxicity of Sphagneticola trilobata L. (Asterales: Asteraceae) extracts and isolated alkane compounds were investigated. Leaves of S. trilobata were sequentially extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Each extract and the compounds isolated were evaluated against the third instars of Spodoptera litura (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae). Ethyl acetate extract and isolated alkanes were feeding deterrents as well as contact toxins again

Viruses are ubiquitous in all ecosystems, and insects can serve as model host systems for understanding their geographic range and host specificity. Lepidoptera are relatively easy to collect and rear and are known to harbor diverse groups of viral pathogens. Much of the research on viruses in Lepidoptera has focused on baculoviruses, but this is beginning to change with better sequencing techniques. In this study, we use genetic tools to characterize the host and geographical range of the Junonia coenia densovirus (JcDV) (Family Parvoviridae, subfamily Densovirinae, genus Protoambidensovirus,
