Pediculus capitis infestation according to sex and social factors in Hamedan, Iran.

Pediculus capitis or head-louse infestation has been a worldwide public-health problem, especially among school-aged children. To determine the intensity of infestation (abundance) among schoolchildren, children's sex and social factors were analyzed as modifiers of the general prevalence of parasitism. The study included 847 schoolchildren (407 girls, 440 boys) aged 6-12 years, from 12 public rural primary schools of Hamedan, Hamedan Province, Iran. Classic prevalence was obtained as the percentage of children with nits and/or lice. The general prevalence was 6.85% (girls: 13.5%; boys: 0.7%,

Scanning electron microscopy of adult head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) with focus on clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of head lice infestations in North America is escalating with an estimated 12 million cases of head lice per year despite the existence of insecticidal therapies. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate certain characteristics of the human head louse, including their chitinous structure, nymphal developmental stages, legs with claw adaptations, antennae with sensory perceptions, and spiracles by which oxygen exchange occurs, for assessment of possible means to control the spread and growth of this insect. METHODS: Scanning electron-microscopic examination of head lice was performed.…

Molecular Survey for Pathogens and Markers of Permethrin Resistance in Human Head Lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) from Madagascar.

Human infestation with head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer, is the most prevalent ectoparasitic condition in the modern world. The purpose of this study was to test human head lice from Madagascar for infection with 2 louse-borne bacteria, Bartonella quintana and Acinetobacter spp. including Acinetobacter baumannii, to assess the potential risk of exposure to these pathogens in rural populations experiencing head-louse pediculosis. A second aim was to determine the occurrence of a biomarker for permethrin resistance in head lice from 6 isolated human communities in Madagascar. Deoxyri

Efficacy of flumethrin pour-on against Damalinia caprae of goats (Capra hircus).

Goats naturally infested with Damalinia caprae lice were used to evaluate the efficacy of flumethrin pour-on. The maximum load of lice infestation was detected in the neck region. The LC50 value of flumethrin pour-on against D. caprae was found to be 119.35 ppm and the 95% confidence limits were calculated to be 104.10 and 136.85 ppm. Flumethrin at the rate of 1 mg/kg body weight by pour-on application along the mid-dorsal line was found to be 100% effective in treating lice-infested goats compared with the control goats. The residual action of flumethrin was found to be at least 42 days durin

Pediculosis and scabies. What to look for in patients who are crawling with clues.

Lice and mites are highly contagious obligate parasites of humans and are spread by close, direct contact. Head, body, and pubic lice produce severely pruritic eruptions in their respective locations. Diagnosis is readily made by finding lice or nits on hair shafts, except in the case of body lice, which are found on the seams of clothing. Scabies often presents as a more generalized pruritic rash. Diagnosis is confirmed by finding the mite in a characteristic skin burrow. Crusted (Norwegian) scabies, a rare variant consisting of infestation by thousands of mites, occurs in patients with neuro

Modelling sea lice control by lumpfish on Atlantic salmon farms: interactions with mate limitation, temperature and treatment rules.

Atlantic salmon farming is one of the largest aquaculture sectors in the world. A major impact on farm economics, fish welfare and, potentially, nearby wild salmonid populations, is the sea louse ectoparasite Lepeophtheirus salmonis. Sea louse infestations are most often controlled through application of chemicals, but in most farming regions, sea lice have evolved resistance to the small set of available chemicals. Therefore, alternative treatment methodologies are becoming more widely used. One increasingly common alternative treatment involves the co-culture of farmed salmon with cleaner fi

Integrative taxonomic description of the chewing louse Tricholipeurus lipeuroides infesting Odocoileus virginianus veraecrucis white-tailed deer in Veracruz, Mexico.

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) represent a component of the ectoparasite fauna associated with large sized mammals as deers. However, the diversity of chewing louse species infesting deer remains to be fully characterized in the Neotropics. Little is known about the chewing lice infesting the extant fourteen subspecies of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Mexico. Known to infest white-tailed deer (WTD) in Canada and the United States (U.S.), Tricholipeurus lipeuroides is a chewing louse species that was originally described in the nineteenth century infesting O.

Do some families act as a reservoir of head lice in the community? Surveys for prevalence and insecticide resistance suggest this is the case.

In response to increasing complaints of head louse infestation in the area of Cambridge, UK, in the mid-1990s, a series of prevalence surveys in selected schools coupled with collection of lice were commissioned by the local health authority. Carers of infested children were provided with advice on treatment by school nurses. Lice collected during these surveys were tested in the laboratory for evidence of resistance to insecticides. These data were used by the health authority to make decisions about recommended insecticide use for control of head infestations. Surveys over 3 years 1995-1997

Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis): history, biology and treatment vs. knowledge and beliefs of US college students.

Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) maintain a worldwide parasitic population infesting two to over 10 percent of human populations, continuing a presence that has been constant since early evidence 10,000 years ago. Outbreaks in the 1970s have been recorded, but incomplete records preclude description of a definitive population cycle. Current levels of infestation in a US college student population were investigated in this study. Knowledge and opinions of students were also recorded in an online survey administered to college students taking a basic health course at a mid-sized East Coast University.

Genetic diversity of human head lice and molecular detection of associated bacterial pathogens in Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is an obligatory blood-sucking ectoparasite, distributed worldwide. Phylogenetically, it occurs in five divergent mitochondrial clades (A-E); each exhibiting a particular geographical distribution. Recent studies suggest that, as in the case of body louse, head louse could be a disease vector. We aimed to study the genetic diversity of head lice collected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and to screen for louse-borne pathogens in these lice. METHODS: A total of 181 head lice were collected from 27 individuals at the Monkole

Growth of populations of lice, Damalinia ovis, on sheep and their effects on production and processing performance of wool.

Merino sheep were artificially infested with lice, Damalinia ovis, and the quantity and processing performance of the wool they subsequently produced was compared with those of wool from uninfested sheep. The experiment was conducted in a winter rainfall region of Western Australia, and was repeated yearly for three years. Louse infestation depressed clean wool production by 0.3-0.8 kg per sheep but did not affect live weight. This represented loss of income to the farmer of about $A0.72 to $A1.92 for each louse-infested sheep. The wool from lice-infested sheep, when processed into tops, yield

A descriptive-taxonomic study of two types of lice isolated from goats in the Basrah Governorate, Iraq.

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis is an infestation of warm-blooded animals, and it is an important economic problem for various livestock and poultry hosts. Lice are termed direct parasites because they produce skin imperfections at tanneries because of the irritation they create during feeding. The feeding process triggers irritation or itching in the skin, resulting in rubbing and scratching. AIM: The study isolated, described, and diagnosed two biting and sucking lice species in goats in Basrah City, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total examination of 50 male and female goats was performed for lice coll
