METHODS: Using Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review approach, a literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science using key terms, including dementia, community-dwelling and death. Following the screening proces

Neuropalliative care in brain cancer.

People with brain cancer experience substantial symptom burden, rapid functional decline, complex decision-making needs, and high care partner distress. Neuropalliative care offers a framework for integrating palliative care principles with neuro-oncology expertise across the disease trajectory, from diagnosis and treatment through recurrence, later deterioration, end-of-life care, and bereavement. This CME article summarises practical recommendations for embedding palliative care in routine brain cancer care, including early communication about goals and values, individualised symptom assessm

Use of complementary and alternative medicine and low quality of life associate with the need for psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions in inflammatory bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suffer from various symptoms, impairing their quality of life and often affecting psychosocial issues. This may lead to the need for additional psychological care. This study investigated patients' subjective need for integrated psychosomatic support and psychotherapy and indicators for it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional multicentre study in Austrian IBD patients who were in routine care at 18 IBD outpatient clinics. Patients filled in an anonymous, validated questionnaire (Assessment of the Demand for Additional P

Emergency Neurological Life Support: Acute Ischemic Stroke.

Acute ischemic stroke is a neurological emergency that can be treated with time-sensitive interventions, including both intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular approaches to thrombus removal. Extensive study has demonstrated that rapid, protocolized, assessment and treatment is essential to improving neurological outcome. For this reason, acute ischemic stroke was chosen as an emergency neurological life support protocol. The protocol focuses on the first hour of medical care following the acute onset of a neurological deficit.

Ethical issues in the care of extremely low birth weight infants.

This article examines the difficulties in making decisions about the medical treatment of infants who have uncertain viability because of extremely low birth weight. The advantages and disadvantages of three systematic approaches are reviewed. An approach called "provisional intensive care for all" may offer the most benefit and cause the least harm. With this approach, all liveborn infants would be presumed viable and would receive intensive care, at least initially. After further assessment of the infant, the parents would be informed as fully as possible about the possible outcome of contin

Quality of End-of-Life Care in Gastrointestinal Cancers: A 13-Year Population-Based Retrospective Analysis in Ontario, Canada.

Population-based quality indicators of either aggressive or supportive care at end of life (EOL), especially when specific to a cancer type, help to inform quality improvement efforts. This is a population-based, retrospective cohort study of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer decedents in Ontario from 1 January 2006-31 December 2018, using administrative data. Quality indices included hospitalizations, emergency department (ED) use, intensive care unit admissions, receipt of chemotherapy, physician house call, and palliative home care in the last 14-30 days of life. Previously defined aggregate mea

Management of potentially inappropriate life-sustaining therapies: a survey of Quebec intensivists.

PURPOSE: Potentially inappropriate treatments (PITs) are a common issue in the intensive care unit (ICU) with substantial economic and human impacts. Previous studies about PITs in Canada lacked representation of physicians practicing in the province of Quebec and were conducted before the 2023 updated reference document on consent to care from the Collège des Médecins du Québec and the Barreau du Québec. We sought to evaluate the approaches and perspectives of adult ICU physicians in Quebec regarding demands for potentially inappropriate life-sustaining therapies (LSTs) and cardiopulmonary re

[The association of adaptive coping and psychosocial support with quality of life in women with some gynecological tumors or breast cancer].

Alongside the physical burden of cancer and its treatments, women with gynecologic cancer face substantial psychological and social challenges that strongly shape quality of life. Adaptive coping and timely psychosocial support may facilitate adjustment, adherence, and rehabilitation. To summarize coping strategies used by women with gynecologic cancer and their association with quality of life, and to describe the role of the multidisciplinary care team in delivering psychosocial support. Effect of Continuity of Care Combined With Family Supportive Care on Cognitive Function and Self-Care Ability in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a combined approach of continuity of care and family supportive care on cognitive function and self-care ability in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: The clinical data of 135 patients with AD, who presented to China-Japan Friendship Hospital from April 2021 to April 2023, were retrospectively analysed. On the basis of the sequential introduction of different care protocols at China-Japan Friendship Hospital, the patients were categorised into three groups: the conventional group (n = 42, receiving conventional care), th

Social connectivity and post-ICU recovery: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Survivors of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and their families frequently experience persistent physical, cognitive and psychological impairments following critical illness, collectively described as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) and post-intensive care syndrome-family (PICS-F). These sequelae often emerge during the recovery period after hospital discharge and may affect long-term functioning and quality of life. Social connectivity-the extent to which individuals maintain meaningful social relationships and supportive interactions-has been associated with improved he

Nutrition recovery after critical illness: toward a personalized, multimodal approach.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although survival after critical illness has improved, many intensive care unit (ICU) survivors experience persistent muscle wasting, malnutrition and functional decline - all of which are key components of postintensive care syndrome (PICS). This review discusses the metabolic and nutritional challenges faced after ICU discharge, explaining why addressing these issues through personalized recovery strategies is both timely and clinically relevant. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence shows that ICU survivors typically achieve 50-60% of their energy and protein requirements dur

Nosocomial infections in a cohort of extracorporeal life support patients.

OBJECTIVES: To examine nosocomial infections in a cohort of patients receiving extracorporeal life support (ECLS) at our institution and to identify the types of infections, impact of prophylaxis, and any apparent risk factors for infection. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, we examined the records of all patients who received ECLS at our institution between August 2009 and March 2011. A prospective, daily, multidisciplinary assessment of all microbiological issues in these patients was carried out, including assessment of microbiological culture positivity and clinical evidence of in

The developing role of children's nurses in community palliative care.

This article addresses some of the contemporary issues in relation to providing palliative care for children in Ireland, particularly focusing on the creation of the specialist palliative care nursing outreach posts. The recent publication of an Irish national policy on palliative care for children with life-limiting illness is welcome news for paediatric nurses in Ireland. Children are valued members of society and have a right to receive quality health care and support appropriate to meet both children and the families' precise needs. However, community services for children with life-limiti
